Around 12:45a ET an 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Japan.

That’s not as good for the news networks as if it happened during primetime on the east coast, but I expect all of the cable news nets to see ratings bumps on Friday.

I’m not making light of the devastation. We live most of our lives under the illusion of relative peace and safety. Once that illusion is shattered, if only briefly, it’s very dramatic.

That makes for riveting television.
