They’re back. Jersey Shore returns tonight with its fourth season set in Italy. I’m not big on conspiracies but the last couple of years lead me to believe that a lot of the people who post hateful comments about the show must be watching every new episode.

While adults 18-49 is not MTV’s primary target, the show is a beast in that demographic, topping pretty much everything on cable other than Monday Night Football and topping most shows on the broadcast networks, too.

Last winter, Jersey Shore peaked at a 4.7 adults 18-49 rating in its fourth episode. Its third season premiered to a 4.2 rating (a series high at the time) and the season finale scored a 4.1 adults 18-49 rating.

You can count on some “the downfall of civilization!” and “their 15 minutes are over” comments, but that’s been the case the last couple of years. How will it do tonight? Since I’m somewhat distanced from this bit of pop culture, I don’t have a feel for the buzz surrounding tonight’s premiere. I’d probably bet against a new series high, but I wouldn’t bet more than a couple of bucks against it…
