One thing that surprised me looking through DirecTV’s earnings (ticker: DTV) was how high the churn is (greater than 1.5% monthly). They added 900K gross subs, but only netted 128K for Q2.
DTV will need to spend heavily to market its new HD services and this requires the newest(say within the last 9months) dish technology on your roof and a special B-band converter installation.
I estimate only 1/4th or so of its current HD installed base will be able to immediately take advantage of this with a phone call alone. It’s a bit of a hurdle to jump through. Everytime someone needs to *buy* something new they hit a roadblock.
