Our friends at NewTeeVee wrote about a rumor where Podcaster Adam Curry's PodShow would soon be available via Tivo via its TivoCast service. In the piece, the author Chris Albrecht wrote that it would give Curry access to Tivo's 10-12 million users.
I commented that Tivo only had 4.2 million subscribers according to its own SEC filings and suggested that the actual numbers would be much lower because of the people like me with two Tivo boxes stacked up in the corner gathering dust. While that is true with me, it doesn't represent a much lower number for the 4.2 million, which includes around ~180K lifetime subscribers (which I was). But outside of the 180K, these numbers represent people who are paying or people who still count in the payments from DirecTV.
I was curious about the 10-12 million user numbers but given an average household has over two people, it's not hard to project out users into the 10-12 million range. While I think there are many households with more than one Tivo, I imagine the average is still close to one per Tivo household.
Still, PodShow will have access to nowhere near 10-12 million users! This content will only be available to those whose Tivos are connected to home networks that are connected to the Internet, which is a very small percentage of the overall base. That wipes out all of the DirecTivos which represent over half of Tivo's installed base, and most of the regular old Tivos as well.
