Ok, so actually it's actually a combination of poor self-discipline and being ahead of the technology curve, but I'm giving Steve Jobs and Apple a point or two for the assist.
For going on ten years now I have had a no television in the bedroom policy. It was a good policy. It helped ensure that I got a good night's sleep. But then this past summer I started cheating with the iPhone. It started innocently enough. I'll just watch one episode of Lost before going to sleep.
Ha! This plan would have worked had there been only one episode of Lost on the iPhone. But I generally have 6 unwatched episodes of my favorites stored on the iPhone and the next thing you know I've watched four of them and it's 1:30 a.m. and I wind up sleep deprived.
Never again, I swore! And for a few months I was committed. But then, with TVbytheNumbers.com mostly up and running I felt some sort of obligation to connect with my work. Fox has this hit called House, now in its fourth season. But I'd never seen a single episode of it and all of the sudden I feel like part of my job is to watch TV. And the next thing you know, Oooh this show is so good! I'll just watch one on the iPhone before going to sleep.
Ha! I caught up on every episode of House (except last night's) in less than 3 weeks. I completely skipped giving myself the no more iPhone in the bedroom (and this time I really mean it!) lecture and moved right on to The CW's- it's really quite good. But I've completely spiraled out of control and I'm not even trying to reign it in.
Instead, I'll just whine incessantly about how tired I am and curse Steve Jobs and Apple.
The good news for Apple, and those of you with good self-discipline is that watching video on a 3.5" display is a completely enjoyable and immersive experience (especially with the ear buds in). The bad news is I don't have that kind of self-discipline and I'm sooooooo tired.
