As with DVD sales, the big Hollywood conglomerates like to give market shares and rankings in lieu of actual data, which makes the whole effort rather meaningless.
As an aside, it is that practice of claiming huge victories with no data to back it up that is partially the cause of the never-ending WGA strike. The writers want their “fair share” out of a “year of records” as the trades put it last week.
What they, of course, didn't report on is that the biggest record was spending to make and promote movies and TV shows that, like Bionic Woman, generally left the audience cold.
And that, somehow, never gets reported because it's not part of the PR releases.
