Alfie, good eyes. I had incorrectly posted the 12/3-9 weekly numbers as the Season to Date numbers by mistake. That has been corrected. However, they don't match the numbers you posted. If you can provide the NBC URL I will check out the differences, there may be many explanations, although I hope it's not another error on my part.

Interestingly, if 18-49 is so “all important” why is NBC forced to offer cash back to its clients?

could it be that 18-49 is not so “all important” and just one demographic group among many others that some advertisers will pay a little more for?

NBC was just the first in the givebacks, they will certainly not be last. They may be trying to control spin since the network is definitely struggling, and I'd note NBC is in FOURTH PLACE in the demo. Still, it's a valid question.

Just for grins, here's last year's season averages for the big four overall and in the 18-49 demo.

2006-2007 season (viewers 2+/18-49 viewers all millions):

    ABC: 9.71/4.43
    CBS: 12.18/4.67
    NBC: 8.60/3.90
    FOX: 10.19/5.13

NBC is actually UP on average in the demo vs. last year's entire season (though they're still in fourth place, overall and in the demo).

FOX is actually in very good shape considering not a single episode of American Idol has aired yet :-)
