FOX ran with a two hour installment of American Idol, and put an epic beat down on the other broadcast nets. FOX easily (and by a landslide) won the most overall viewers and the most viewers in the 18-49 demographic.
How bad was it? FOX averaged more than THREE times as many viewers as its nearest competitor NBC. It averaged more than FOUR times as many viewers as CBS, and more than FIVE times as many as ABC. The CW? I'd tell you I can't count that high, but I can - more than FOURTEEN times as many.
Ah, where do we go from here. I guess you probably already figured out that the season premiere of Beauty and the Geek on the CW didn't do so well with 1.88 million.
FOX stayed in the mode of "We OWN the 18-49!" and I am now in the mode where I actually agree with NBC for touting its second place finishes against American Idol. It's actually impressive. Other than AI, only NBC's lineup of The Biggest Loser and a rerun of Law & Order: SVU could crack the 2.0 "Mendoza Line" in the 18-49 demographic. CBS, ABC and the CW? All under 2.0 for the night. NBC had a 3.0 in the demo, which it would probably take on ANY night. So I am understanding more and more why the peacocks stick their feathers out over 2nd place.
ABC? Other than Primetime: What Would You Do? in the 10pm slot - the Mouse ought to be ashamed of itself. It has completely thrown in the towel, and I think they'd admit it without much arm twisting.
CBS? Well, its most watched program for the night was a rerun of NCIS, but all that glitters is not gold. With around 2.5 million fewer viewers, Big Brother 9 did better in the 18-49 demographic and was the only CBS show to crack the 2.0 mark in the 18-49 demo.
On the recommendations of the fans on the comments of "How Will Jericho Do Tonight?" I binged and finished Season One last night and agree with the comments about how the show improved and the pace picked up towards the end. One commenter has compared Season 2 of Jericho with LOST Season 4, so I will certainly be checking that out as well. I think the problem is when you spend 16-17 episodes of a new show with bad pacing and storylines it might not be recoverable. Sadly, that seems to be the case with Jericho.
I know the Jericho fans will chastise Nielsen, but whatever Nielsen's flaws CBS loves Nielsen when it comes to CSI and Two and a Half Men, and it's not lost on CBS that however Nielsen counts, it always counts more viewers for a rerun of NCIS (a RERUN!) than it does for Jericho. If there are three million people on average who are watching the whole show via iTunes or the Internet on top of the 5.87 million who watched last night - that's what it would take to outperform a rerun of NCIS. I hope that Jon Turtletaub who was the mastermind who allowed the show to languish sluggishly for the first 17 or 18 episodes of season one, is in talks with CBS to take this show to SciFi or the CW.
I agree with the fans, the show picked up at the end of season one and hopefully I will enjoy Season 2 as much as some of the comments suggest I will, but this show can't and won't thrive on CBS. That ship has sailed. It can and should thrive somewhere else, and I hope Turtletaub is smarter about that than he was about the pacing for season one.
I'll put on my flak jacket while you folks check out last night's full details:

*sigh* My only hope is either CBS doesn’t have enough pilots for the new season or Jericho gets picked up on Sci Fi. We just can’t seem to win.

I think Jericho is one of the better shows on TV in recent memory. It is just a shame CBS put it on hiatus on season one – totally ending its momemtum. The shows this year just keep getting better and better.
I am so sick of this reality crap and all these stupid detective shows I could just quit TV altogether.

Jericho’s producers really shot themselves in the foot by going the Iraq route (same thing killed Battlestar Galactica’s Season 3 ratings). Some have suggested CBS pressured the producers to go heavy on the Iraq angle to deliberately kill Jericho by alienating conservative viewers in its fan base. If you actually paid attention to the first Season, it was clear the producers and writers were planning this all along. In Season 1 there were 22 episodes so they could hide their liberal, anti Iraq war/Bush administration biases pretty well. But in Season 2, they were forced to come right out and say it “Kansas = Iraq”, Corporations are sinister evil things that want to kill deaf girls and hospital patients and Bush Administration is on par with the 3rd Reich. Last nights episode which is basically the event in Fallujah Iraq back in 2004 where employees of Blackwater (Ravenwood on the show) were killed and their bodies hung like hunting trophies. was the bottom of the barrel. Next week it looks like its time to go all Gitmo!! Im half expecting Code Pink to do a musical guest spot in the finale. Yoi! Double Yoi! Alot of viewers caught onto this a long time ago and abandoned ship after the first 2 episodes. Its a real shame. Jericho was a pretty good show up until the end of Season 1. Im not sure if I can even stomach next weeks episode. Alot of people I know have already thrown in the towel.

I don’t want to upset the delicate fantasy world that our conservative sheep live in, but it’s American Idol that’s killing Jericho. The dwindling 25% of US lemmings that still blindly follow their failed right-wing agenda have nothing to do Jericho’s ratings.
It is embarrassing to see the Iraq conflict from the point of Americans in the same situation, isn’t it? No wonder it galls the few remaining neocons.

All I know is that this is the first show I’ve made it a point to watch since Seinfeld went off the air. When and if this one goes away, I’m done with television until something grabs me again. I’ve never adored a series like this one and frankly the abysmal ratings leave me scratching my head. I have never been able to sit through an episode of LOST or 24 but you can’t get me out of my seat during Jericho. That’s just how it is. I wish more people felt the same way. Oh well.

Bill Clay: to you I say BAH! BAH! BAH! You and your ilk are just as sheepish. My primary inspiration to think about writing columns was none other than the Washington Post’s (and now ESPN’s) Tony Kornheiser. TK doesn’t talk politics on his show very much but I’m pretty darn sure he leans LEFT and he LOVES LOVES LOVES him some American Idol.

Hawkins, actually, they did NOT say that Kansas = Iraq. In fact, the OPPOSITE was said. “This isn’t Iraq”. “No. But the rules are the same”.
Comparing last nights episode to Fallujah is dangerous. All I can say is that Fallujah was not about covering up evidence to a crime.
I agree with you that it’s a shame that viewers left after the first few episodes. It’s a shame that they can’t tell the difference between reality and fiction. Its a shame that they let their bias confuse what is, and is not real. It’s a shame…
It’s also a shame that the writers have things like you mentioned to base stories off of.

P.S. I don’t like American Idol. I don’t like politics much either.

Few remaining neocons? You’re kidding, right? How is it that the Divinely Appointed Democrats always have a fight on their hands come election time? How are these “few remaining neocons” making such a dent in the bleeding hearted liberal pursuit of the socialist utopian dream? And why will Hillary or Obama lose to McCain, an unpopular GOP man if ever there was one? Do bleeding hearted liberals ponder why, even with incessant liberal propoganda pouring endlessly out of every TV channel other than FOX, that this country doesn’t elect liberals in a landslide in EVERY SINGLE ELECTION? How can it be? The neocons have one biased channel, FOX, while the bleeding hearted liberals have ALL the rest. And still the GOP gets voted in time after time. “Few remaining neocons”, indeed. Talk about a “delicate fantasy world”.
I, for one, don’t see any correlation between the foolish politics that so many get drawn into and the show I love so much. You can see whatever you want to see, no matter where you look. I enjoy watching liberally biased channels. Heck, 99% of them fit that description, but I don’t get upset about it. It’s fun to see people functioning in an imaginary country with imaginary crisises all over the place. FOX is the same, but much less entertaining, they’re too serious over there.

I was reading another article that said that Jericho was one of the top DVR shows. Well I am one of those. Considering my schedule, I can’t always sit up that late and watch it. American Idol certainly doesn’t help, and it running after Big Brother is certainly not a selling point either. These God awful reality show that America has embraced is appalling! Shows like Jericho that are smart and original can’t get off the ground because, they are “smart”.
Wake-up America! It doesn’t matter if you are conservative and the show is leaning the other way. It’s still FICTION! All people do is analyze. Why not just enjoy a show for once instead of just trying to find some underlying purpose. Your tv view would be more pleasant if you accept it as entertainment. If you are afraid that watching the show is going to change your opinion on something, than you have a bigger problem than Jericho does.
