Sometimes It’s Over Before Carol Barbee Says It’s Over

Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James and Carol Barbee in Happier TimesThis is one of those times. And I'll up the ante of a dozen roses and twelve pounds of nuts to also include washing her car and doing her landscaping work for a year if I'm wrong. But it's over. I could see a direct to DVD movie a la what Stargate: SG1 did with "Ark of the Truth". BTW, I haven't been pimping that DVD on our site largely because it wasn't very good. I mean it was OK, and it was good to see the first team in action again, and it was nice to get closure on the story, but it wasn't very good.

Ok, back to Jericho. It's not coming back. The fat lady has sung, only Carol Barbee must have in the earplugs or, she's like me and has her iPod earbuds in at all times and is effectively saying to the world, "La la la la la, I'm not listening to you!" Sometimes that's a pretty grand thing to do. Thank you, Steve Jobs! Best earbuds ever. Just the generic ones that come with the iPod and the iPhone - none of the "cost extra" stuff, even the ones sold by Apple are better in my estimation.

It could well be that in 10 years from now, Barbee will still be saying, "we're looking at doing something...." But just because you declare something isn't over doesn't mean it isn't. Combing the net and making a few phone calls it would seem that apparently the budget for Jericho was about twice that of your average show being made on the SciFi channel. I would be much more optimistic if it had been 25% more expensive or even 50%, but when you get to the 100% level, that's not good.

It would be different if it started on the SciFi channel at half the budget and then migrated to broadcast - that's a whole lot easier to pull off.

While I am perhaps not the "average" Jericho fan, I don't think I'm alone in thinking that if Skeet Ulrich and Lennie James aren't part of the ensemble, I won't be watching no matter where they put the show. I'd prefer it if they could keep Esai Morales as well - I liked the Beck character a lot.

And here's where the problem comes in. The show has been cancelled. No new deal has been done.

What's bound to happen soon: Lennie James, Esai Morales, and Skeet Ulrich are going to get, you guessed it, JOB OFFERS. Because they're good actors. I think Brad Beyer and Alicia Coppola (no relation to Francis Ford Coppola, so she's not getting props simply because GF1 and GF2 are like my favorite movies of all time) were great, too.

Skeet, Lennie , Esai, Brad, Alicia and all the rest of the cast: they can't exist on the nuts fans will send them. They have to eat, and live, and they like their craft I imagine. Especially in the cases of Esai, Lennie and Skeet, they're not going to want to take a huge pay cut. And if they're cut out of the show altogether? There is no show.

One thing that is absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent NOT going to happen is for Jericho to move to the CW. I know I myself pitched that a while back, but it's not happening. CBS has operational control over the CW (and Warner, although it gave CBS this control is now not happy about it apparently). CBS called "game over" for Jericho. If it was going to wind up on the C-dub, they'd have aired the cliffhanger and then announced with the ‘voice of God', "Catch an all new Jericho next fall on the CW!" That's not what happened though. What happened is CBS cancelled the show altogether. The CW is not happening for Jericho.

I don't believe the SciFi channel, or any other network will either. I understand that like the fans, Carol Barbee wishes this were not the case. I don't blame her. But as Patrick Stewart once uttered in the role of Jean-Luc Picard, "Wishing for a thing does not make it so."

To stay with the Jean-Luc theme, resistance is futile. Jericho, sad as it is. Is over. Even though Barbee hasn't copped to that yet.

Ms. Barbee, if it turns out I'm wrong, in another incarnation I spent 7 years working on a golf course. I'm pretty good with a lawnmower.

For fans who don't care that wishing for a thing doesn't make it so, you can join Carol Barbee in her wishful thinking by listening to her interview with Shaun Daily on Blog Talk Radio.

Farewell, Jericho, you will be missed! But it's over. It won't break my heart to be wrong here, even if it means I'm going to have to redevelop calloused hands. But, obviously, I don't think I'm wrong.

But as Gorman loves to say, "Often wrong, never in doubt..." I do live up to that pretty well, and will be the first to admit that as much as I love speculating and prognosticating, and as often as I am right...often right isn't always right. But I feel strongly enough that I'm willing to risk the flowers, nuts, car washing and landscaping services.

Erm. I understand you enjoy prognosticating but do you really enjoy being right?

It's stupid to hope, but I'm still hanging on. I've made my peace with Jericho being canceled, but if there is even the slimist chance of it coming, I'll do what I can to help.

That said. Without Lennie, Skeet, Brad and Alicia you're right–this isn't Jericho anymore. I'm not sure what Jericho could do to cut their budget beyond paycuts.

Jerichofan12: I believe in hope in a spiritual way, very much. But when it comes to forecasting and tea-leaf reading, “Hope” is but a four letter word. Many people woke up this morning hoping that the NASDAQ would go up, but “Hope” is not a good basis to make a decision abuot whether or not to buy the QQQQ.

Kramer — I'm waiting until JA is done and then I'll binge on it all at once.

Aurelius: I enjoy thinking and figuring stuff out, and to that end, I much more enjoy being right about my thinking than wrong.

and just to tack on. I'm not bashing Jericho. If Terminator: TSCC had 6 million viewers and a 1.9 in the 18-49 demo, I would be writing that FOX should cancel it, as much as I love the show, and as much as I am infatuated with Lena Headey and Summer Glau!

I echo Danielle's sentiment. I've made my peace with it and bitterness, after all, really doesn't get you anywhere. However, I do still have hope that Sci-Fi can cut the budget (I really do wonder what the big budget is covering, except salaries…'cause it's not as if the sets are all that stunning or anything.) and produce the show, given that the actual Nielsen viewer numbers would be a nice chunk for a cable network.

However, I still stand by my thanks to Robert for providing us with these numbers, first-off, every week, even before his regular posting…knowing how ontheedgeofourseats we were about them each time.

And, like Danielle, my letters are going out and my emails and my phone calls are being made…as I feel I need to do as a supporter. I hope that a deal can be made quickly, to avoid the loss of major characters, without whom…as you have said…the show will not BE Jericho.

I guess: “hope for the best…prepare for the worst” pretty much sums it up.

@ponytail: yep, it's a good philosophy for everything. P.S. thanks for the kind words.

Robert thats a pretty fair assessment of where things stand. Of course many will bash you for saying its over. There are still fans of INVASION still trying to bring that show back. A year from now there will still be JERICHO fans doing the same thing. SCI-FI was a good possibility at one time because they started airing reruns then as of March 28th, they are stopping the reruns not even bothering to air the last 5 episodes of Season 1. Then SCI-FI even moved Jericho from Monday to Friday a month ago yet their web page for Jericho still says Monday. Its pretty clear the ratings for the reruns were bad – otherwise they would have at least finished up the final 5 episodes. Season 2 wasnt nearly as good as Season 1 and 1/4 of its fans from Season 1 agreed and stopped watching. That pretty much put the nail in the coffin.

  • Guess Who

Terminator SCC finished its first season with a 3.3 18-49 demo vs. 1.9 for Jericho. TSCCs key demo actually improved from around 2.5 to 3.3 in the last several episodes, that is why that one will probably get another shot.

I'm willing to go that TSCC will definitely get another shot. If I'm wrong, I may well lead the “Save Sarah Connor (and Summer Glau)” brigade myself! ;)
