Sometimes It’s Over Before Carol Barbee Says It’s Over

Skeet Ulrich, Lennie James and Carol Barbee in Happier TimesThis is one of those times. And I'll up the ante of a dozen roses and twelve pounds of nuts to also include washing her car and doing her landscaping work for a year if I'm wrong. But it's over. I could see a direct to DVD movie a la what Stargate: SG1 did with "Ark of the Truth". BTW, I haven't been pimping that DVD on our site largely because it wasn't very good. I mean it was OK, and it was good to see the first team in action again, and it was nice to get closure on the story, but it wasn't very good.

Ok, back to Jericho. It's not coming back. The fat lady has sung, only Carol Barbee must have in the earplugs or, she's like me and has her iPod earbuds in at all times and is effectively saying to the world, "La la la la la, I'm not listening to you!" Sometimes that's a pretty grand thing to do. Thank you, Steve Jobs! Best earbuds ever. Just the generic ones that come with the iPod and the iPhone - none of the "cost extra" stuff, even the ones sold by Apple are better in my estimation.

It could well be that in 10 years from now, Barbee will still be saying, "we're looking at doing something...." But just because you declare something isn't over doesn't mean it isn't. Combing the net and making a few phone calls it would seem that apparently the budget for Jericho was about twice that of your average show being made on the SciFi channel. I would be much more optimistic if it had been 25% more expensive or even 50%, but when you get to the 100% level, that's not good.

It would be different if it started on the SciFi channel at half the budget and then migrated to broadcast - that's a whole lot easier to pull off.

While I am perhaps not the "average" Jericho fan, I don't think I'm alone in thinking that if Skeet Ulrich and Lennie James aren't part of the ensemble, I won't be watching no matter where they put the show. I'd prefer it if they could keep Esai Morales as well - I liked the Beck character a lot.

And here's where the problem comes in. The show has been cancelled. No new deal has been done.

What's bound to happen soon: Lennie James, Esai Morales, and Skeet Ulrich are going to get, you guessed it, JOB OFFERS. Because they're good actors. I think Brad Beyer and Alicia Coppola (no relation to Francis Ford Coppola, so she's not getting props simply because GF1 and GF2 are like my favorite movies of all time) were great, too.

Skeet, Lennie , Esai, Brad, Alicia and all the rest of the cast: they can't exist on the nuts fans will send them. They have to eat, and live, and they like their craft I imagine. Especially in the cases of Esai, Lennie and Skeet, they're not going to want to take a huge pay cut. And if they're cut out of the show altogether? There is no show.

One thing that is absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent NOT going to happen is for Jericho to move to the CW. I know I myself pitched that a while back, but it's not happening. CBS has operational control over the CW (and Warner, although it gave CBS this control is now not happy about it apparently). CBS called "game over" for Jericho. If it was going to wind up on the C-dub, they'd have aired the cliffhanger and then announced with the ‘voice of God', "Catch an all new Jericho next fall on the CW!" That's not what happened though. What happened is CBS cancelled the show altogether. The CW is not happening for Jericho.

I don't believe the SciFi channel, or any other network will either. I understand that like the fans, Carol Barbee wishes this were not the case. I don't blame her. But as Patrick Stewart once uttered in the role of Jean-Luc Picard, "Wishing for a thing does not make it so."

To stay with the Jean-Luc theme, resistance is futile. Jericho, sad as it is. Is over. Even though Barbee hasn't copped to that yet.

Ms. Barbee, if it turns out I'm wrong, in another incarnation I spent 7 years working on a golf course. I'm pretty good with a lawnmower.

For fans who don't care that wishing for a thing doesn't make it so, you can join Carol Barbee in her wishful thinking by listening to her interview with Shaun Daily on Blog Talk Radio.

Farewell, Jericho, you will be missed! But it's over. It won't break my heart to be wrong here, even if it means I'm going to have to redevelop calloused hands. But, obviously, I don't think I'm wrong.

But as Gorman loves to say, "Often wrong, never in doubt..." I do live up to that pretty well, and will be the first to admit that as much as I love speculating and prognosticating, and as often as I am right...often right isn't always right. But I feel strongly enough that I'm willing to risk the flowers, nuts, car washing and landscaping services.

So let me get this straight:

Scifi and Barbee are in talks.

    But you say its over.

So, what do you know that Scifi and Barbee don't, and why is your word gospel? Do you have a time machine or some form of clairvoyance?

I'll wait for the fat lady to sing…

Guess Who, SciFi will split the season to run the last 5 with the Season 2 7 giving them the lovely number of “12″ they like so much to run after BSG. Don't jump to conclusions.

I don't think anyone is saying anything is gospel and I think Robert wouldn't mind eating his words in this instance. He's making a prediction, that's all.

I do hope he eats crow, but thats only so I can get some more of my show. :D

Oh Robert! You pot stirrer!! I hope you're wrong, but we will know for sure by the end of May if not sooner. I believe the actor's contracts expire around then. After that, it could only be a re-imagining, like a graphic novel or a complete re-casting.

T:TSCC really deserves a second season. It only had the best numbers of all the mid-season scripted shows.

Currently a lock to win the season, Fox's January-launched “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” remains the highest rated of the midseason scripted flock with an average of 10.8 million viewers and is likely to return next fall.

And that's in addition to Summer being on the show. Which, taken on it's own, should be enough of a reason for FOX to renew.

I hope a book comes out. I just want the story to be finished, don’t care how.

I, too, have made my peace with the ending of Jericho and would do not want to watch it if Skeet and Lenny are not part of the cast.

If I lived through the abrupt ending of Freaks and Geeks, I can live through this. Last week I was mad and said that I would never watch CBS again, but they still have Criminal Minds and CSI…so I lied.

Honestly, I don’t think Jericho could have ever pulled in the numbers needed to surpass other shows on Tuesday night to stay on the air. As much as Barbee “wanted to give Jericho a chance,” the bar was set too high.

Thanks Jericho for some great shows that made me think.

I have never posted a comment to you before. I realize that your job is to report television news and therefore Jericho and its fans, of which I am one, trying to bring the show back a second time is your business. Where I think you crossed the line is how you approached this piece. From somewhere you picked up that the shows fans were saying “It’s not over until Carol Barbee say’s it’s over”. You made a variant of this quote pivotal in you story and I find it really hard to believe you had no idea that would be inflammatory. That kind of reporting might endear you to some but it does nothing for your credibility as a serious news source.
