CBS won the night in both overall viewers and the 18-49 demographic on the back of the NCAA Men's final between Kansas and Memphis. What a great game! I'm not looking forward to hearing more about Memphis' free shooting woes. Fortunately my friend Mike who saw his NCAA pool winnings evaporate before his eyes is not a big fan of the 5p-6p (EDT) hour on ESPN. There is not yet enough data available to make any call on the overall performance of the game ratings wise, but the prime-time portion, coupled with the fact that these #s always seems to be adjusted upward when it comes to live sporting events leads me to believe this won't be record low performance for CBS. Update: it was not record low performance.
The most interesting thing CBS-wise to me may be that a repeat ofat 8pm had what may be the most viewers the show has ever pulled in (10.21 million) and the demo numbers were a solid 3.6/11. I believe some of this may be due to the way time zones get averaged in the overnights - and it could be that both that and the repeat of will be adjusted downward in the final numbers. We'll see.
ABC was in strong second place led by 90 minutes ofwhich averaged almost 20 million viewers. Samantha Who? was back and lost about 40% of the DWTS lead-in, but given that a.) people have remote controls and know how to use them and b.) the NCAA game was on, I'd say this was a pretty good showing for Samantha and Miss Applegate. Perhaps not a triumphant return, but more than a warm welcome back.
NBC is mostly not worth mentioning here other than Medium, in the 10pm timeslot with over 10.72 million and a 3.4/9 in the 18-49 demo was NBC's best-performer of the night. I don't want to hear any whining about 10pm in the future!
FOX ran with a House repeat that led into a new episode of New Amsterdam. Marc Berman says NA fits like a glove out of House, but when I saw that NA performed worse in the demo than a rerun of House, it conjured images of O.J. Simpson in the courtroom struggling to get the gloves on.
