There’s no future for these shows unless someone does something dramatic and radical across acting, writing, production AND promotion to get these shows back to the forefront. IMO ATWT missed a huge opportunity by not promoting the recent kiss by their gay couple, especially with the grassroots campaign by fans when they hadn’t kissed in 7 months. I don’t think that the proliferation in other options can fully explain the drop in the ratings of soaps, especially when you see that Days has plummeted 75% in women 18-34 in the past 6 years, its key demographic. I think you can tie it into the mega-hit relationship dramas that have proliferated in primetime during that span – GA, DH, etc. These shows are basically primetime soaps and have done extremely well, and it’s made the poor quality of daytime soaps stand out like a sore thumb. So those in the 18-34 demo, a well-known fickle one, easily switch off Days because not only is it ridiculous, but it’s also poorly made. And as the last 15 years have shown, once those viewers are gone, they’re gone for good.

During its peak, Passions used to eclipse a 3 rating in teen girls during the summer, an unheard of number even for soaps at that time. Last week, Days led with a 0.5 rating. In Canada, Global TV (our Fox) was not counted in the national ratings until 2002, so final nations were not avaliable. Local markets were though, and at one point Passions was drawing more female teens in Toronto alone than the top rated series was nationally. Then it went down the tubes and the balloon burst.
