I agree with VSgroi. I liked Ghostfacers (GF). I understand why people might not like it because of its timing in the shortened season, but it was funny and creepy (think Sammy in the birthday hat!).

Andy, I disagree about Ben Edlund. I do like Jeremy Carver's stuff, but Ben Edlund's previous episodes have been good. In addition to GF, he wrote Malleus Maleficarum, Bad Day at Black Rock (great physical comedy in this one), Hollywood Babylon, Nightshifter (an AWESOME episode which introduced Agent Henricksen), and Simon Said.

I loved Thursday night's episode of "Supernatural". It was quirky with lots of laugh out loud moments. Sure the first 10-15 minutes with no Sam or Dean was torture, but after they showed up, things were great. The ghost was appropriately spooky, icky, and nasty. As Dean said--visiting Morton House was their Grand Canyon.

Sad to see the lower ratings.

lol at Tony.

+ 1 to Jack.

Anyway, I agree with Polly. Supernatural last night was disappointing. I think it's time Ben Edlund (who wrote Ghostfacers, and also created Bela) needs to start writing a LOT less. He's simply not as talented as writers like Jeremy Carver (who wrote Mystery Spot).

I'm actually somewhat glad that only 2.27 tuned in. It's a clear indication to the writers that episodes like this aren't as appreciated as episodes like Mystery Spot, or Dream a Little Dream of Me, etc.

Next week the ratings should go up, Long Distance Caller looks superb. And Edlund didn't write it. :)

I was really glad to go on Variety.com and see that LOST's 18-49 was actually a 5.5. Which is higher than the last two episodes it had at 9 O'Clock. As long as it has a good lead in like Grey's it should do fine at 10. And I guess it really doesn't matter what it does during the finale since it will fall out of the Nielsen season and May sweeps.

I was really glad to go on <a href="http://Variety.com">Variety.com</a> and see that LOST's 18-49 was actually a 5.5. Which is higher than the last two episodes it had at 9 O'Clock. As long as it has a good lead in like Grey's it should do fine at 10. And I guess it really doesn't matter what it does during the finale since it will fall out of the Nielsen season and May sweeps.

Personally, I liked the Supernatural episode last night just fine - I thought it was quirky and fun and a nice little light episode before what I'm sure is going to be three gut-twisting episodes for the rest of this season (jut like Hollywood Babylon last year, if y'all will recall...) - and I'm shocked at these ratings.

Could the fact that the CW programming was pre-empted in Chicago due to the White Sox game be to blame for part of it? And is there any way to find out if it was pre-empted on other major affiliates? I know that pre-emption can't be to blame for how badly it performed by itself - that there were other factors, including know doubt confusion over "wtf is this and where are Sam and Dean?" by some viewers and disinterest in others - but still I'd like to know how great an impact pre-emptions had on the numbers.

Supernatural's ratings were down because it really wasn't a "Supernatural" episode. It was more like an introduction to another show called Ghostfacers, compliments of Supernatural. If you didn't know better, just watching the first half hour- was like; they put something else on! where is Supernatural? then finally we see Dean and Sam, for about 15 minutes after the half hour it was Supernatural-like, then we get Ghostfacers again. Then two more minutes of Dean and Sam at the end. So we wait one more week to see an actual episode of Supernatural. Three more eps. is not as good as four but that's ok. Man what were they thinking, we wanted to watch Supernatural, not Ghostfacers. For new people who saw this episode, please watch next week, this is not a typical example of Supernatural.

Nessa - I understand the spoof idea (and what they were spoofing), I just think that they wasted an opportunity to win over viewers that might have started watching during the strike. (I also think that as far as spoofs go, this was a bad one.) In case anyone wonders I think Supernatural is great (just not last night and 16% of the viewers seemed to agree. Unfortunately for the CW they need all the viewers they can get and this didn't help.)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Polly: I understand where you're coming from, I just don't think that's what they were trying to do. They were honestly making it a show that took all those lame stereotypes about reality shows, the Blair Witch Project, Ghost Hunters, and expectations of SN and making it ridiculous in a funny way that people could tell it was a spoof. But I get that people don't like that type of thing, and you're either in or your out. Personally, I never cared for the episode Tall Tales in season 2, but after a while, I realized it was pretty good, just an aquired feeling.

Matt: See, that's what I think of last night's show. It was nice to have something fresh and original that they haven't done before, and when you watch the entire season 3 as a whole, you can also see that it's a much needed comedic break.

I liked the concept of last nights Supernatural. A mix between the Blair Witch/Cloverfield and the Office. However everything is explained at the end which I didn't like unlike BW and Cloverfield.

I also loved last night's episode of SUPERNATURAL. It once again proved its the most versatile show on tv. One week it's hilarious. Another week terrifying. Then an episode that's heart wrenching. Many times its a combination of all three. And it does each genre really well. I give them an A+ for keeping the show fresh and completely original.

Polly, when it comes to YOUR name, you may be as picky as you want. I am fairly picky about my preference for Robert to Bob, and my brother Steve is fairly picky about being called Steve instead of Steven.

I don't find it incredibly picky! I gave you your extra L back! :D

Robert - I don't know if it is just limited to the 12-34 demo. I know that this year I've started viewing a lot more TV online than I ever had. It is just a lot more convenient and less commercials. (you would think they would pay attention to the hits on youtube for their shows as an indicator of interest though)

(Not to be picky, but you've dropped one of the l's in my name, makes me think of an icky fabric now.)

Polly, if I were the networks I would be really concerned too!!

And I wonder especially among 12-34 year olds whether there isn't actually a whole lot more Internet viewing going on that doesn't get captured by ANYONE because it's happening OUTSIDE of the network's own web sites and iTunes and cannot be measured. I always knew this would be a problem, but I am beginning to wonder if it is already more pervasive than we thought.

One key piece of data I don't have is the PUT last night at 9pm vs. the same night a year ago. If the number of people watching television was the same, we can then fairly attribute all of the bleed of broadcast network television to cable networks. But if it's smaller, we'd have to attribute at least some of it to...something else.

Robert - Didn't see the Supernatural numbers before my previous post. Thanks! I'm surprised it was only 16%. Hopefully next week will be better.

Thetruthhurts - Could we please stop with the personal attacks? If you disagree with their opinions fine, but pointing out your observations on their appearance doesn't help your argument. (Saying this in the nicest possible way and with all due respect.)

Jon V, the 18-49 numbers (even though today's were incorrect for LOST) are also from data that comes out later than the fast affiliate. Marc could post the updated HH info along with those, but he does not. I think what he's trying to do with his morning newsletter is get the early number out there.

As for the HH info -- admit it, you're still going to Zap2it anyway, right? I am not trying to be first, but if I wait until the viewer and 18-49 numbers AND the Zap HH data is published, I will be publishing later than I already am. I don't see the upside.

I see 95% of the value of these posts being putting the #s in a table that's very easy to scan and 5% on the analysis -- and that may even be giving myself too much credit.

The HH ratings numbers reported here being subject to change would be one thing -- but they ALWAYS change. Usually not by much, but they do always change. Given that, do you really see value in including them here?

Earl came out of his coma at the end of last night's show which should return a number of alienated viewers.

Dr. Kelso said good-bye to the show last night and it appears that Dr. Cox will become the new Chief of Medicine - don't know if that's good or bad for the show. Most of us liked 'Coxie' right where he was.

Robert - Thanks again! Wow, how did Shark go from that to being "on the bubble" for pick up? If I were the networks I would be concerned about the fact that they seem to be bleeding viewers. Maybe if they would quite picking up their favorites that no one is watching (Lipstick Jungle anyone?, etc.) they might be able to slow it down a little.

Nessa - I think the reason I hated it besides the completely stupid plot was that the writers wrote that episode for themselves not the fans. If you want to play on someone else's dime then do it when you have a full season, not when you are coming back from a strike with only four shows to go. It also played into all the critics gripes about the show. (Okay, rant over back to the numbers!)

Nessa – I think the reason I hated it besides the completely stupid plot was that the writers wrote that episode for themselves not the fans. If you want to play on someone else’s dime then do it when you have a full season, not when you are coming back from a strike with only four shows to go. It also played into all the critics gripes about the show. (Okay, rant over back to the numbers!)

Robert - Thanks again! Wow, how did Shark go from that to being "on the bubble" for pick up?
Robert - Please don't throw out the baby with the bath water.

The HH numbers are very important to me (that's how and why I started coming here in the first place).

Just make people aware that they are subject to change (unless we can figure out exactly how they come up with the HH - in which case just 'divulge' the equation and I'll crunch my own numbers).

I do see where the HH's for Lost and WOT seem way out of whack considering the 18/49 and share numbers.

Is it based on advertising dollars per minute in certain age groups or do the networks and sponsors get together to decide what they think a show is worth?

Poly: here are the half hourly breakouts for Supernatural (thanks to Travis Yanan, again!):

9pm
- 2.473 million viewers
- 1.6/2 HH
- 1.0/3 A18-49
- 1.0/3 A18-34

9:30pm
- 2.069 million viewers
- 1.3/2 HH
- 0.9/2 A18-49
- 0.8/2 A18-34

So about 16% bailed.
