Nielsen Ratings Apr 29: Is A Drunken Paula Abdul Good for Ratings?

Scoreboard for Tue. April 29, 2008 FOX CBS ABC NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 18.35 10.83 9.63 6.27 2.08
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 7.1/19 2.4/6 2.4/6 2.1/6 0.9/2

Is an allegedly drunken Paula Abdul good for 18-49 demo ratings?  Not really, but her memory lapse didn't seem to hurt either.  American Idol had an 8.7 rating in the demo vs. an 8.8 last week.  Meanwhile, Hell's Kitchen soared to a 5.5 in the demo - a series record.  I'm not sure how all of that will come out in the finals after adjustments, but Gordon Ramsay's demo prowess will be celebrated at FOX nonetheless.  That led FOX to wins in the demo for both the 8pm and 9pm hours.

There's some big news too:  Women's Murder Club stunk it up following Dancing with the Stars and only pulled a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demo.  About as good as it did on Fridays.  I never really got into the show (didn't love it, didn't hate it which is the case for me with most shows).  Two words for you ABC: Denny Crane!

Nielsen is notoriously bad at distributing free data sometimes, but I must emphasize the word FREE.  While it would be nice if all companies thought like Google when it came to FREE products, it's not realistic so I won't slam Nielsen for that.   But I haven't seen any viewer data at all yet, just household rating and 18-49 demo rating data (via Media Life). Update: viewer info now available, and added -- all this really did was highlight FOX's total dominance because even with NCIS on CBS and DWTS on ABC, CBS and ABC are a lot closer to NBC than FOX.  Yep, I know they have to program an extra hour, but still.

So far this has been my least favorite season of Hell's Kitchen, but mostly I chalk that up to having watched three season's worth already.   I had the same experience with Survivor and I have the same experience with most shows I've seen three years worth of.  I'll stick it out anyway, because Ramsay is so over-the-top that I can't help but love him.

Law & Order: SVU won the 10pm hour with a 4.1 in the 18-49 demographic.

Never happy when a show tanks but kind of happy for boston legal since women’s murder club tanked. last outing legal had 10.5 million and a 2.8. it dropped in the nationals and because of the dancing overrun but so will WMC. Of the 4 so called bubble shows… boston, eli, WMC and men in trees… boston and eli performs best with good lead ins and boston does best with horrible lead ins. abc needs to pick up boston and eli.

Three little words can make Women’s Murder Club a watchable (and watched) show: Angie. Harmon. Drunk.

  5. Tom, BL’s finals for last Tuesday were: 9.932m and a 2.7/7 in the 18-49 demo. WMC won’t come anywhere near that.

since BL went from 10.5 in the overnights to 9.9… WMC has to drop into the upper 7′s in the finals. i think abc should move BL back next week so they end strong for (hopefully) next season.

  9. Guess Who

CSI reruns beat Jerichos old numbers in the 10pm slot by 1.6 million plus it costs nothing to make whereas Jericho clocked in at $3 million per episode. I guess CBS moved Shark to 9pm to give it a boost. Looks like it worked. I doubt that would have helped Jericho though since it was clear that millions of Season 1 fans jumped ship.

Drunken Paula Abdul? Is there any other kind? LOL!

  11. WMC was much better off as a Friday show (slot winner, etc.). I saw this as a test to see if Angie could compete against her old franchise, L&O. I won’t read too much into this first week’s results.

WMC was a good show last night, but SVU had Robin Williams and a ripped-from-the-headlines story that was going to be hard to beat.

Believe it or not, in my last minute shuffling on Sunday, I ended up with both of these on my TVBS network… not one of my strategies.

Those numbers aren’t very good for WMC. Cancel it or move it to Fridays. Could NBC really think of nothing better than a 2 hours of clip shows? Beauty and the Geek is posting bad numbers, even for the CW. No way that should come back. Shark’s and NCIS numbers are good considering its comp.

  15. TM

The Unit was supposed to be back with repeats on Tuesday nights. CBS mislead The Unit fans again with an episode of Shark.

  17. AZTop

We have the winner of season 1 of Hell’s Kitchen in the city where I live (Sierra Vista, AZ). I haven’t found him yet, but am curious if Ramsey is really that crazy. Can’t imagine that his act could be anything other than “good television”.

Reaper doesn’t seem to be doing any better or any worse. Just kind of staying where it is. Not sure if that’s a good sign or not though…
