CBS Again Atop Weekly Viewer Race, Fox Wins All Age Demographics
CBS again took the weekly crown for average viewers for the week of April 28 - May 4, 2008 with a slightly larger margin over Fox and ABC than last week. CBS gained 750,000 average viewers from the previous week, enough to edge Fox by 570,000 viewers. I thought with the return of House Fox would again claim the weekly viewer title. No dice. CBS could only manage third place finishes behind Fox and ABC in adults 18-49 and 25-54 and only a fourth place finish also behind Univision, in adults 18-34.
As has been the pattern since American Idol began, Fox won all the age demographic categories by comfortable margins.
With no more scripted shows left to start with new episodes before the May sweeps ends, it's unlikely that any network will see significant boosts for the next several weeks. Many shows will end their season runs before others, and that will cause some networks to drop before others.
ABC was second place in all the age demographic categories (although it beat CBS in adults 25-54 by only 40,000 viewers) as well as a close third place in the average viewers race again.
Limping towards the end of May, NBC managed only a distant fourth place in most categories and fifth in adults 18-34 behind Univision. It lost nearly 500,000 average viewers from the previous week.
CW couldn't keep up its recent string of weekly viewership gains as it lost about 50,000 average viewers to finish sixth across the board in all categories.
