It's was Matt Groening's fault. American people connect with the Simpsons. Fox stole that credit, and now everyone confuses Fox with the Simpsons. The SImpsons should have been with NBC instead.

Charlie, I am entirely speculating, but my guess is that Fox came into the cable news business with personality programmed news shows during primetime and did so well that both CNN and CNNHN sought to emulate them.

Just speculation mostly because I haven’t done any “before or after” comparisons. My guess is that HLN viewers were sparse before (even in primetime) and still sparse now. But while I agree that there may be some brand dilution, it’s an advertising driven business and they’re probably having an easier time selling ads with the new approach. 20 years ago HLN was a great idea and a great service. But now with seemingly ubiquitous Internet access, they might not be too worried about diluting the brand, especially if it makes them more cash.

Bill – I’ve been reading this blog since ‘reconnecting’ with Robert Seidman on FriendFeed (after about 8 years or so . Like what you guys are doing here and now subscribe to the feed. Just one personal observation. Is it just me or did TWX have a focused target market when Headline News was just ‘Headline News’?. No reflection on Beck, Grace, etc but that’s what I used to go there for…Headlines. Challenges to the ‘opinion market’ should be left on CNN or a third network. I think they’ve diluted the brand considerably.

American Morning is doing better, but with Chetry out, these numbers aren’t as good as they would have been, especially since it was the day after the big primaries in NC and IN. AM needs Chetry back soon. She has the chemistry with John Roberts that the other females don’t have. CNN struck gold with Chetry, and they need to utilize her 10 times more than they are currently doing. She’s a star with the potential of a Katie Couric, and I wonder if CNN realizes this yet.
