Scoreboard for Sun. May 11, 2008 CBS ABC FOX NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 11.76 11.49 4.76 3.97 1.19
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.6/10 4.0/11 2.3/6 1.1/3 0.5/1

CBS beat ABC out by a nose in total viewers, but ABC bested CBS by more than 10% in the 18-49 demographic.  CBS was fueled by three hours worth of Survivor: Micronesia season finale (won by Parvati) and reunion.  ABC had it's typical (as of late) Sunday night lineup and won the 18-49  demo every hour other than 8pm-9pm when the first hour of Survivor nipped Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Desperate Housewives was back in the low 15 millions but still pulled a powerful 5.5/14 in the 18-49 demographic, that's down from 16.63m and a 6.2/16 only a week ago though.  Still comparatively speaking things looked relatively pleasant for ABC and CBS.  We wonder if the day is coming where NBC, like The CW before it simply cancels its Sunday night lineup and rents the bandwidth.  Last night would certainly have been a good night to do just that.  The peacocks' best performer was a  repeat of Law & Order: SVU, and it was crushed by both the season finale of Brothers & Sisters and the Survivor: Micronesia reunion show.  Even  America's Favorite Mom didn't fare all that well on Mother's Day.  Kind of sad.  Not Quarterlife sad or anything, but still.  Two hours of repeats of The Office however, was somewhat Quarterlife-esque

There can't really be much doubt about why the CW opted to bail out of programming Sunday night.  Look for a couple of CW's shows here to land in what will be the post-Smackdown Friday night wasteland of  CW programming.

And the saying for this year's upfront presentation seems to be "Flat is the new up!"  With that in mind, props to CBS, Mark Burnett Productions and Survivor:  Micronesia.  This year's finale averaging 12.98m, while down from last year's 13.68 million had a 4.4/12 in the overnights this year versus last year's final number of 4.4/14.

FOX didn't have a particularly great night with its animation block.  A new airing of The Simpsons could not quite reach a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic. But Family Guy, the anchor of FOX's Sunday nights these days was a rerun.   I guess reruns during a May sweeps Sunday are not just an NBC thing.

OMG DH pulled series low … but I´m not worried …. it is because of MOTHER´S DAY ….

  2. Julia

    Heh, you’re kidding, right Patty?

BTW, I think you guys left out the numbers for the Simpsons repeat.

  3. To quote Homer, “D’oh!” I added the 7:30p-8:00p airing info.

  4. Denise

I’m so sad. I forgot about the Office marathon, so instead I watched a movie on DVD. :(

To comment on the recent cancellation of Back to You
It is very interesting that FOX would cancel a show that got better numbers in both the viewers and share. And yet they still keep ‘Til Death which has never gotten more than 7 million viewers? Also, the animation block is going to need a massive overhaul with the soon-to-be ending of The Simpsons and King of the Hill.

I predicted the office wouldn’t do well on Sunday. (but who couldn’t)

how much longer can the simpsons last? I’m not saying cancel it now,(that’d be stupid), but it is kind of sad this show now plays second fiddle to family guy.

  7. Elyk988, It was widely rumored that the decisions on Back To You vs. ‘Til Death were cost driven. That is while they had comparable ratings, ‘Til Death was much cheaper because it had no “names” while Back To You’s 2 stars were relatively expensive.

dave, I’m not surprised that the Office does poorly in repeats. It’s a heavily DVR’d show so its fans probably don’t miss the originals very often.

  8. Ely, it appears that 18-49 demographics (where ‘Til Death and Back to You were tied) and managing margins (factoring in how much shows cost to produce) are the metrics that matter most to FOX. It makes sense to me.

  9. Elyk988

O.k, thanks for clearing that up. Although I would say Brad Garrett is not a “no name” actor.

  10. here i am

thats seems utterly terrible for the simpsons … was that close to a series low?

  11. tom

it's been a great simpsons season but after so many eps and years and the movie… even they are not immune to overkill. plus they always bounce up in the fall with 10-11 million. look at the numbers at the beginning of this season… simps always drop off after daylight savings time, plus the strike effect. things will prob. go back to normal in the fall.

  12. Was gonna say about the same things that have already been said.

Looks like you folks have got things covered here.

One thing… I believe mentioning that DHW 'jumped the shark' with the Tornado Episode. So far there has been a steady decline since that ep. We shall see.

O.k, thanks for clearing that up. Although I would say Brad Garrett is not a “no name” actor.

  14. Rob D

Even though Family Guy was a repeat, American Dad was definitely a new episode (I watched them both). It's also obvious because American Dad held almost all of it's lead in.

  15. That one is completely on me, Rob. That's what I get for publishing before I've had any coffee. Next Monday, coffee first!

  16. ughh .. i watched that simpsons episode, it was truly great. can't believe 6.02. fox has gotta start promoting moree. .
