Edit: Schedule grid updated on 5/27/08 for CW's Sunday night announcements.

As badly as the CW has done this season, its hard to imagine they'll do worse next season. They've already sold off Sunday night to a third party. What else are they going to try next fall to reverse their slide?

Two of the six of the new CW Fall 2007 shows (Reaper, Gossip Girl) introduced in Fall 2007 survive into Fall 2008. The three new shows introduced for Fall 2008 (90210, Surviving The Filthy Rich, Stylista) seem targeted much more directly at young women than the shows they replace.

Unlike ABC, CW is cutting back significantly on its unscripted programming., going from 7 hours in Fall 2007 to 3 hours in the Fall of 2008. Losing Friday Night Smackdown is going to hurt their numbers substantially, but the loss of the disastrous reality hour from 7-8 Sunday (CW Now, Online Nation) is going to help. It's not clear to me that Stylista outdoes Beauty & The Geek.

I don't know whether the now sold Sunday night will count with the CW weekly Nielsen numbers. If it doesn't, I think the CW has a reasonable chance to hold even vs. this year on an average viewer/demo adults basis. They're only programming 10 hours a week, and dropped their worst performers from this year. I think they could stabilize at what is admittedly a low level.

It seems that Mon-Wed are girls nights, Thursday is SciFi/Fantasy Night (boys also welcome), and Friday is African American night. It certainly seems thematically logical, but will it work?

However, if that happens, and MyNetworkTV continues to see its numbers rise (particularly with the addition of Friday Night Smackdown) I think they could approach the CW's numbers next year. Passed by Univision this year, how would the CW handle being passed by MyNetworkTV next year?

7/19 Update: CW has announced its Fall 2008 premiere dates.

Shows in BOLD CAPS are/were new, shows in italics are unscripted, 2007 shows in strikethrough did not return.

Reaper is slated to return in mid-season.

I didn't think it was worthwhile to compare the announced Winter 2009 and future schedules to this years for two reasons. One, this years Winter and Spring schedules were somewhat cobbled together in response to the writers strike. Two, schedules announced so far in advance have a habit of changing.

Ha. They still managed to find a way to use a Top Model repeat.

So I see them pimping 90210 out the way they did Gossip Girl this season and then it will bomb even worse. Tuesday will hardly even show up on the radar.

Do you think we’ll still get ratings for Sundays, even though it’s a 3rd party programming it? I was wondering if they may end up doing better than CW has ever been able to do.

90210 is the only smart move here. brand recognition will get some to sample. They should have paired it with gossip girl. 90210 fans of yore would probably get a kick out of gossip girl and now they will probably never see the show.

Stylista and Rich girls? Not going to be hits but by CW low standards; may survive.

  3. on the contrary, i think, on paper, this schedule does a much better job targeting young women than the 2007 schedule did. b&tg was always more evenly skewed than other cw shows (certainly more males watch it compared to antm) and i suspect stylist, especially airing out of top model, will be more W18-34 skewed. 90210 leading into filthy rich is questionable to me… 90210 will open big, but from the script, i just don’t find anything remarkable about filthy rich. it’s a shrug for me. if sunday isn’t counted in cw’s ratings (i suspect it will be, as there will be national advertisements), then the average will definitely rise because sunday has been cw’s weakest night. friday, from a W18-34 perspective, probably won’t be so much worse than this season with the wwe. form a total audience and other demo perspective… disaster.

The latest rumblings are that the folks who secured the Sunday night CW slot might pick up Moonlight. What’s your thoughts on this? I understand it isn’t in all markets. Just how much less saturation does it have than CBS?

I’ve never watched a show on CW but if Moonlight moves over there, I’m completely game.

  5. The short answer is this: I have absolutely no idea! But otherwise, heck, I’d LOVE to see a Sunday night lineup of Jericho AND Moonlight because its fans are very active on the Internet! I’m hampered by not knowing what MRC’s objectives are. Are they, like the CW targeting youthful markets? If so, both Moonlight and Jericho are no deals, regardless of cost.

Also, I have no idea what MRC’s budget for shows is. I’ve heard Moonlight wasn’t among the most expensive dramas to produce, but that doesn’t mean it’s not coming in a lot more expensive than what MRC is looking to pay. I’m skeptical about this happening, but hope is hope!

“… its hard to imagine they’ll do worse next season.”

Not too hard for me. They’ve lost Smackdown, and no way are EHC and The Game going to pull in numbers anywhere close to what it did.

It’s reasonable to assume that GG’s, OTH’s, and Reaper’s ratings will continue at their current pathetic levels.

It’s also reasonable to assume that 90210 and STFR will, at best, get those same kind of ratings.

In its first two season, at least one of the CW’s new shows has been a disaster right out of the gate. Runaway in their first season. Life Is Wild and Aliens In America in their second season. I bet this trend will continue and I’m putting my money on STFR.

And finally, Smallville is way past its expiration date. The absence of most of the cast next season should pretty much do it in.

Hey CW, why don’t you pick up Moonlight, it would go great with your Sci Fi schedule. And it already has a following of 8 million viewers. Hey it couldn’t hurt…..

  8. Danielle

I really wish they would move Supernatural to Tuesday nights again but I guess it goes well with Smallville. I’ll be happy if the show makes it to the five seasons Kripke wanted.

Veronica Mars, and now Aliens in America.. This is why I hate The CW/WB.

  11. angela

i agree they should pick up moonlight!!! totally worth it!!

  12. Marissa

I agree…90210 should definitely be paired with GG

Don’t think the filthy rich show will be succesful

In the end, Gossip Girl is the only show I watch on CW anyways and I just hope GG can continue to be by far the msot buzzed about show that it has a good chance of moving to another network for third season if CW goes under…

  13. Nichole

I am just glad that Supernatural is coming back. I only watch Thursday on the CW but I might check out the 90210 since I loved the early years of the orginal.

  14. Nikki

Wow. I guess the only two scripted diverse shows they have EBHC and The Game will become phased out after this season since they keep moving its days. First they started out on Mondays, then Sundays, now Fridays when hardly anyone really watches television. I think that both are really good shows. The Game has relationship issues that most adults have gone through or knows someone who went through the issues. I guess CW stands for Child's World because the majority of their shows are for people 21 and under.

  15. micheal

reaper is the best show ever!

    yes reaper is the best!

  19. Kristina

I can’t wait for Supernatural and The Reaper to come back! It’s a welcome break from reality TV!

  20. Dee Dee

It would be a smart move for the CW to keep the “The Game” on air. Especially w/Football season starting. I love that show and I know several others who love it too! Please don’t take it off the air!
