Once Again The Hills Beats up On Gossip Girl

It's a weird quirk because I watch neither of these shows, but I just never get sick of seeing the beatdown that MTV puts on the CW Monday nights.

From the CW press release announcing next season's schedule:  GOSSIP GIRL was the most buzz-worthy show of last season and had the highest concentration of female teens of any series on broadcast television. Gossip Girl will return to its 8:00-9:00 p.m.

Two notes: one, you'll note the careful use of the words "broadcast television", and of course as ever buzz-worthy, no doubt, but watch-worthy?

Gossip Girl vs. The Hills

Once again, The Hills has more viewers in the coveted 18-34 demo than not only Gossip Girl, but Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill combined!  I know GG fans love the show, and I know, I know everyone you know from Soho to Sigapore watches.  And yeah, yeah, DVR, but DVR this: in the week of Gossip Girl's return from hiatus it had 743,000 watch via DVR , which isn't shabby considering its live base, but alas, The Hills had more with 1.068 million.

Thanks again to Travis Yanan who posted Monday night's final numbers on Marc Berman's forums.

The Hills is really, really bad. And didn’t start doing this well until its third season. Ratings are not a reflection of a show’s quality.

    That is all.

  2. People watch the Hills, people watch GG, so why do you orchestrate this odd battle between the two shows. GG has been renewed and has a loyal fanbase, as does the Hills. It seems Dawns bitching at you has you on some sort of crusade to continually tell us how much better the sh*tty Hills does. Enough with this stupid faux battle and report something PEOPLE want to read about. Perhaps the fact that GG had it’s most viewers since November and a steady 3% share in the 18/49 demo for the fourth week in a row. There is no accounting for taste (Moment of Truth anyone??). You know viewers don’t equal how good a show is, so telling us about the Hills “beating up” GG is pointless.

A comment from Holland, sorry for the bad english!:

The ratings maby not realy good, but that says nothing about the quality! You have to stop with this Gossip Girl bagging!

    I’m interested in these numbers!

Also, Gavin, no one in the business cares about the share. At all. A show needs to be able to get people who wouldn’t be watching anything else to turn on their TVs.

Seriously, is your website’s traffic so miserable that you have to resort to cheap gimmicks like these? I think you can start writing your next GG-bashing article already, titled ‘The Hills still get higher ratings than GG’s season finale’ or some crap like that and just fill-in-the-blanks when the numbers come in. Every week you post the same old god damn thing about how The Hills have higher numbers than GG, and hence, it’s supposedly better (or whatever it is you’re implying). Please, just STFU already.

Just because The Hills get higher numbers, it doesn’t mean it’s more watch-worthy (or any better) than GG. For one, The Hills is on MTV, a more established channel & brand name than the CW. Second, The Hills is in its 3rd season while GG is only on its first. And first season numbers for teen hits like the original 90210 (and even The Hills for that matter) weren’t all that impressive. And has it occur to you why DVD’s (or any post-broadcast sales for that matter) of unscripted shows don’t sell as good as scripted? I shan’t go into that but my point is, comparing scripted with unscripted is like comparing sugar and spice.

I just don’t see why you have to constantly bash GG. 2million is about its average while 3million is The Hills’. Expecting GG to exceed The Hills would be ridiculous. And have you ever considered why MTV has yet to retaliate with a press release that countered The CW’s? Maybe the publics of The CW’s press releases don’t give a hoot about cable show performance?

You say that iTunes’ numbers don’t matter. Fine. But if more people are willing to fork out $1.99 (when they can simply just DVR it) for GG than The Hills, there’s no question which one’s more watch-worthy or better, add on to the fact that 3 of GG’s episodes are in the top 10. I bet you disagree with me on this but Nielsen’s ratings measurements use sample sizes while iTunes’ Top 10 are based on exactly how many people bought the show; I say iTunes is a far more accurate indication over a show’s popularity.

  6. It appears absolutely nobody saw where I said I watch neither show. Obviously I can’t comment on the quality of either. Am I inspired by the CW’s verbiage in its press releases? Sure. But while viewers may not indicate quality, they indicate how much money the shows make selling advertising. Though I agree in general that DVD prospects are much better for scripted shows than unscripted, if the CW sells a million GG DVDs it doesn’t equal what an additional 1 million 18-34 year olds watching the show would.

As for iTunes being the barometer of popularity, I’ll take Nielsen ANY day. The iTunes top 5 right now: 1.) Greek, 2.) One Tree Hill, 3.) Lost, 4.) Gossip Girl, 5.)Bones. For those of you who don’t know, Greek is on the ABC Family channel. Of course, since it’s the most popular show, everyone already knows that. ::cough::

yea just you wait till the latest episode of GG “Woman on the Verge” is released.

Did anyone read Dawn Ostroff's dumb interview in Variety? And I quote, “we want to be the OMG TV network!”

How dumb can you get? This network is trying to sell one thing, and one thing only: sex (in the interview Dawn O. also talked about making Reaper more “sexy”). Quality is not the point of this network. Which is why it will ultimately fail. And thankfully, it will take Gossip Girl with it.

If Your Shooting For A Quality Show Then I'd Stay Clear Of Both.

  10. Kara

I'm also sick and tired of this GG bashing. Hills was almost at the point of cancellation in season 1..and it has only in the last two seasons done well

    Hills is horrible…its realitly show.

GG…watch a few episodes before stating its crap. There is a reason that many critics have actually enjoyed this show. It's witty and quite well writtenn

And stop comparing CW with MTV…Why not compare the Hills to any other CW show??? Hills gets better ratings than ALL CW SHOWS…so what r u trying to say??

  11. Danielle

Bleh, I hate The Hills. Why is it some of the worst shows do the best in the ratings? I mean its just my two cents that The Hills blows, but that doesn't change the numbers.

Yes, but Gossip Girl sales a ton more on iTunes. And I really believe buying on iTunes is a much more popular method to young persons than DVRing.

  16. david

give it a break guys. No one believes that GG has more viewers than the Hills no matter how much you toot it’s horn.
