The local ratings are in and in the battle for Detroit eyeballs, the Detroit Pistons are winning. It really has been a head-to-head competition as the first two games of the Stanley Cup championship round featuring the Detroit Redwings and Pittsburgh Penguins have aired at nearly the exact same time as games 3 and 4 of the eastern conference finals in the NBA.
So here's where things stand in the Motor City:
- Saturday Game 3: Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons 11.5 local rating in Detroit
- Saturday Game 1: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Redwings 7.8 local rating in Detroit
Things improved for both teams last night:
- Monday Game 4: Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons 15.1 local rating in Detroit
- Monday Game 2: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Redwings 11.5 local rating in Detroit
My take is that the local ratings are pretty huge for both, with one in four household in Detroit watching one game or the other (and probably some of both) on Monday night.

Can you really compare the two…one is on ABC the other on Versus which many people don’t have access to. Also, hockey fans in Detroit can watch the CBC broadcast as well but these numbers are never calculated. Better to check the ratings of Weds. game when the Red Wings will be on NBC. Also, isn’t Detroit 80% black? I reallly don’t think these people are watching hockey in large numbers. If you looked at state wide ratings it could be alot different.

The Monday night NBA game was on ESPN, not ABC, but I agree Wednesday’s comparison when the NHL game is on NBC will be the far more interesting and perhaps fairer one. I looked at the ratings that were actually available to us and the chances of us seeing state-wide ratings for Michigan are zero… But we will see Wednesday night’s broadcast ratings for the NHL game on Thursday and no worse than a week from today (and probably sooner) the NBA ratings for Wednesday night’s game. I will be sure to do a follow-up comparison.

did game 1 on vs. really get 2 million viewers? i cant remember hockey ever cracking 1 million in a game before when on oln/vs.
Yep, Game 1 of Stanley cup got 2.32 million viewers nationwide.
You have to look ALL the way back to this years eastern conference finals game between Pittsburgh and Philly – also did 2.3 million viewers on Versus….so definitely not a big surprise that the Stanley Cup final did as well. Additionally, the entire playoffs has averaged more then 1 million viewers for each game…
oh i guess i never saw that data. well good for the nhl then, i cant say they deserve success considering they way they’ve run the league, or that vs. deserves good things considering they are owned by comcast who are a purely evil corporation…but at least the sport is getting more attention, which should be the bottom line.

yep, these ratings aren’t reliable. Wednesday will tell us but even then people could be watching on CBC. I get bad reception on NBC so I will be watching on CBC. Plus, I like the overall broadcast better on CBC.

i have to imagine the american audience who can get cbc is fairly small. especially americans who have neilsen boxes who get cbc and watch it. id guess 1 person fits this bill.
That's true overall, Kayarn, but this piece referenced the local ratings *in* Detroit. As Detroit is almost literally a stone's throw from Canada, I'm guessing the % of people there who can receive CBC there is quite high.
Yes most of Detroit gets CBC in Canada but I see ratings going way over Pistons. Mainly because listening to radio here it's all Wings.
