Scoreboard for Weds. May 28, 2008 FOX CBS ABC NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 9.26 9.02 5.91 4.46 2.45
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.6/10 2.0/6 2.1/6 1.9/5 0.9/3

FOX's So You Think You Can Dance scored 9.26 million and a 3.6/10 in the 18-49 demographic and won the night, significantly outpacing the field in the 18-49 demographic.

Marc Berman lists the NHL Stanley Cup Finals game 3 as a loser, and compared to most shows not on the CW (at least in total viewers) it's an understandable call.  But I'm guessing the NHL will be as pleased with the ratings as the Pittsburgh Penguins were to finally score a goal against the Detroit Red Wings and win the contest 3-2.

I'm pretty sure NBC will be happy - on two levels: one, Pittsburgh winning ensures at least 2 more games on NBC.  Secondly, while I don't have the past years ratings for individual games, I'm guessing last night's 4.46 million (preliminary overnight numbers, subject to change) that this game had the most viewers for a Stanley Cup Final since the 2004 season where the games on ESPN and ABC averaged 3.29 million.  In 2003  they averaged 3.63 million.

Last year's (2007) games on Versus and NBC averaged 1.76 million.  So far this year, including last night the Stanley Cup Finals are averaging 3.09m.  In 2006, when the games were on NBC and OLN, they averaged 2.83m.  If Pittsburgh can win the next game, this year's games have a shot at being the best since 2004 or  even 2003.   In 2002, the games averaged 5.77 million whichseems quite a bit out of reach.  I wouldn't call last night's numbers a huge win for NBC, but I doubt they'll be displeased with 75+%  higher than last year's average.

If Gossip Girl ever gets 4.46 million viewers the CW might convince the mainstream media it has a hit as big as American Idol on its hands.  As it is, at least in total numbers, two hours of Farmer Wants a Wife (one repeat, one original) didn't do much worse than Gossip Girl.

And OK, so the NHL game did get eclipsed by the return of the final episodes of Men in Trees on ABC.  Trees had 5.31 million total viewers, though the NHL had a better 18-49 demographic showing.  The NHL also has a chance to improve its ratings next year.  Men In Trees will not get that chance.  Update: the NHL game averaged 4.92m the last hour.  The demo breakout was a 1.6/5, a 2.0/5 and a 2.1/6 for the 8p, 9p and 10p hours respectively.

Hockey hasn’t been the same since the Whalers left town…

  2. pepper

best game of the series lastnight by far. the end to end action in the second was so compelling you couldn’t turn away. Not to mention both of these teams could play even better than what they showed. Saturday is going to be amazing. grab a case and fire up the bbq for another great game. ahhh sammy….good ol Whalers..

  3. Rob

The fact that more people watched the final than in previous years does not mean 4.5 million is something to brag about. It’s still a bad result

  4. Sandy

I completely agree. Those numbers would be HUGE for Versus though. Some sports just weren’t meant for primetime network television

  5. pepper

It’s not a bad result for a viewership that has a reputation for not being able to follow a sport that isn’t played in 30second increments.

Honestly, if you give hockey a chance you will become addicted! Pittsburgh is insane for the penguins! Not just STEELER nation anymore, PENGUIN nation baby!
