Scoreboard for Thurs. May 29, 2008 ABC FOX CBS NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 10.41 9.35 7.32 4.09 1.68
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 4.0/11 3.6/11 1.9/6 1.7/5 0.6/2

OK, so they're not American Idol style numbers, but LOST averaged almost a 5.0 in the 18-49 year old demographic for the two hour finale. I joined the 12.2 million viewers LOST averaged for the 2 hours who waited to see just who was in the coffin! As I wrote earlier, I really enjoyed the episode but didn't find it quite as amazing as some of the blogsphere.

Other than FOX's So You Think You Can Dance, which drew in almost 9.4 million and averaged a 3.6/11 in the 18-49 demo for the two hour airing, there's not much to say. Everything else was repeats except for Last Comic Standing on NBC, and that performed worse than the repeats on CBS.

Making matters worse, LOST won't be back for months and months as it will again debut mid-season.

USA is premieres In Plain Sight this Sunday night at 10pm and you can see some of my thoughts on it here.

If you haven't entered our Law & Order: Criminal Intent contest, check it out if you're interested in winning some free DVD box sets and a t-shirt.

Did I say it's going to be a long wait for LOST yet?  Update: here's a look at the numbers for all of LOST's season premieres and finales (other than the season 1 premiere I was able to dig up all the numbers).

Will CW's Dawn Ostroff still have her job by day's end? They say bad news is always announced on Fridays.

Wow. LOST dominated, but averaged only 12.20 million viewers. I’m sure when the DVR numbers are factored in it will be closer to 15 million. It’s far from the 23.47 million viewers it had when season 2 premiered.

    :-(

  2. Robert, do you know the numbers between the Season 2 premiere and the Season 3? Not that I’m a good measure of America but I stopped watching in the middle of Season 2 until my friend told me to start watching 3, that had picked back up and was good again. I think Season 2 was weak enough to drive a lot of viewers away.

23.47 million viewers Man of Science, Man of Faith Season 2 premiere
18.82 million viewers A Tale of Two Cities Season 3 premiere

A Tale of Two Cities had a 7.7/19 rating for the 18-49 demo. I don’t know the 18-49 numbers for Man of Science, Man of faith.

Why do networks put on reality shows for 2 hours? I mean, American Idol can get away with it- but the less popular shows can’t. I watched a little of Last Comic Standing, but there is no reason for that show to be more than 1 hour.

  5. Rob D: NBC can’t be like FOX but it’s fun to pretend? So You Think You Can Dance seemed to pull off the 2 hours OK.

  6. I’ll put something together for the season 1, 2, 3 and 4 premieres and finales and dig up whatever 18-49 demo info I can find. I’ll do a separate post, but I’ll post a note here when it’s done (should be within the next hour or so).

  7. Lost season premiere/finale info is up:

    http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/05/30/losts-lost-viewers/3978

couldn’t dig up much info for the S1 premiere, but otherwise found all the data.

You’re right about Fox doing pretty good with SYTYCD. I guess NBC will put on America’s Got Talent for 2 hours and do well also. I just think it’s overkill. I might be in the minority, but if I see one of these reality shows on for 1 hour- I’ll watch the whole thing. If I see it’s on for 2 hours, I might not watch at all (since the shows aren’t that good and the commitment is too great).

The Nhl had more avg viewers for Wed on NBC than Thurs avg. Also 18-49 demo was a good chunk of their overnight ratings. The last hour of the game = CSI 2.1, and the NHL game = CBS Thurs avg of 1.9

  10. Doug

    Lost's premiere episode did a 6.8/20 in adults 18-49.

This is the archive from my old website (it's still up, but I haven't touched it in years)

    http://justtvratings.tollfreepage.com/ratingsin…

I have the weekly ratings lists going back to Feb 2000. The weekly list is only really accurate from 2003 onwards (the top half is good, the bottom, figured out from PR releases and household ratings)

I mean that post-2004 is accurate. That's when I found ABC medianet :)

  12. Don

LOST's loss in viewers more comes down to intelligence. 23 million people needed instant gratification… 12 – 14 million viewers were SMART enough to stick around ! Guess what !!! Sticking around gives the GENUIS' 32 more hours of the MOST thought provoking entertainment !
