CBS Continues Summer Viewer Wins, Fox Wins All Age Demos
CBS again took the weekly crown for average viewers for the week of June 2-8, 2008 but positions 1-4 were much closer than they were last week. CBS gained 90,000 average viewers from the previous week, but Fox, ABC, and NBC all gained about 500,000 average viewers to close the gap.
As has been the case for pretty much all of calendar 2008, Fox won all the age demographic categories, but like the total viewer race, its margins were noticeably smaller than last week. I think the crushing mediocrity [or worse] of the summer schedules is forcing all network results into a narrow band.
The NBA Finals did help ABC gain nearly 500,000 adults 18-49, to significantly narrow the gap with Fox. ABC was second place in all the age demographic categories.
NBC was third in adults 18-34 and 18-49 and in a dead heat with CBS for third in adults 25-54.
CBS is showing its age this summer finishing fourth in adults 18-49, fifth in adults 18-34 and tied for third in adults 25-54.
CW's youth viewers don't care for its summer schedule at all, and it averaged but 450,000 adults 18-34 for the week. Of course, it was in sixth place in all categories.
