OK, it was a demo tie with ABC and nobody watched broadcast prime-time last night, but that headline was irresistible
Sadly for the CW, the victory was all Friday Night Smackdown! and it's leaving CW this fall for MyNetworkTV. It's an example of that CW programming genius I tell you, genius!
At 10pm NBC aired a tribute to Tim Russert who passed away yesterday. I thought to do a separate post on Mr. Russert, but instead I'd suggest everyone visit TVNewser, they have an extensive collection of memories, and I could not have done better than this for our site:
- Tim Russert moderated Meet the Press longer than any other person in the program's history. When he took over in 1991, the program ranked third in the ratings behind ABC and CBS.
- As of last week, Meet the Press has finished first place on Sunday morning in Total Viewers for 89 consecutive weeks, and 353 out of the past 354 (when all shows are in full coverage).
- In May, MTP won the sweep period for the 42nd consecutive sweep. It was the best Total Viewer delivery for the program since 2004.
Otherwise, it was all reruns, news magazines and an (in retrospect) ill-advised movie from Fox which set the floor for the evening.

I’d be stunned if the new Friday CW lineup can get a third of the amount of people watching it now.

I can see it now: The CW’s new Friday night line-up will trump the competition. Yea right! Dear Dawn if reruns of America’s Next Top Model don’t work on Sundays what makes you think they will perform better than Friday Night Smakdown.
I really can’t wait for October 2008 to come so The CW can see that their Friday night programming will be last out of 6 and MyNet will finally move up one spot for the first time. I have a strong feeling that MyNet will have the same, if not more people watching Smackdown next year. Plus a good lot of MyNet’s affiliates were UPN affiliates and will market the heck out of Friday nights I think.

I’m tired to seeing that demographic age of 18-49. Do any of these networks know how many baby boomers there are, and the majority of them have a lot of disposable money. I’m one of them, and our age group probably watches as much or more t.v. I don’t know if their way of computing viewers is up to par, but their missing a large amount of the population in their counting.

That’s the problem, Joe. People 35+ tend to watch much more television than those <35. Supply and demand. You can go to 30 different series and get a 5.0 rating in adults 35-64 (or maybe more than that), but just a handful to get a 5.0 rating in adults 18-34. These viewers are harder to reach (especially the males), which is why advertizers will pay a premium for them, and why we get a daily release of the 18-49ers. It doesn't mean that you're irrelevant, it just means that you're not as valuable as a 25-year-old

Will TV by the numbers start reporting MyNetworkTV on a daily basis come this fall?
dumont, I’d love to, and if we get the numbers from Nielsen we will. Currently, we report all the overnight data we get on a consistent basis. Occasionally, we get overnight data that includes more than ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW, but only occasionally.

The reason why the 18-49 demo is so important is that group is most easily influenced by advertising whereas 50+ tends to be more responsible with their money (with retirement approaching). Its also why 18-49 group has the most money problems – they see something on TV and they run out and buy it now and worry about how to pay for it later.
