Oh, Robert, don't let something as silly as a report in a well-established industry trade influence your opinion. Any Moonlight fan will tell you that it's still not over! I mean, they have a fan with unnamed sources who's been wrong about everything so far. Why on earth wouldn't they continue to trust her word and keep campaigning?

So, Robert-you think that Moonlight fans are as jilted as Moonves ex-wife without the alimony? Spare me please. Moonlight fans aren't jilted, they're fired up about a show that wasn't given a fair shot at developing an audience due to lack of promotion by CBS, a Friday night time slot and the writers strike. Moonlight didn't lose any where near the numbers some other shows did after the strike; fans were eagerly awaiting the new episodes. And as to the "coveted" demo of 18-49; do advertisers think that people in that age category have money to spend on products seen during any tv show when they have tuition to pay, rent/mortgages, car payments, kids, student loans and so on? I am just over the coveted demo and I have lots of money I can spend where and when I chose because I don't have debt-no mortgage, car payment, kids, etc. Yet, because I'm over 49, advertisers think I'm chopped liver or something?
I've seen the promos for the Ex-List and it doesn't do a thing for me. The idea of a woman relying on a physic's word that she has already met "the one" and has a year to find him and get married seems pretty lame to me. I could care less if she finds the guy or not. Do I think Ex-List has a prayer at getting the coveted demos? Nope. I have been a fan of many of CBS' shows; including 60 Minutes, CSI Miami, NCIS, The Unit, Shark, Criminal Minds, CSI, Without a Trace, Ghost Whisperer and NUMB3RS and of course, Moonlight. Reality shows? You can keep 'em. Game shows? Same thing. Sit-coms? Phttttt. Ex-List? Yawn. Swingtown? No thanks. The heavily promoted Viva Laughlin was so bad, it died after 2 airings. Moonlight had me looking forward to Fridays; seeing the on-screen chemistry between Alex O'Loughlin and Sophia Myles, the romance, the humor, the drama-Moonlight had it all. And I was just as stunned as the cast and crew when CBS announced it was dropping Moonlight. Alex O'Loughlin went through a lot for Moonlight-a total recasting of the show, 5 different show runners with 5 different artistic visions, the writers strike resulting in a shortened season and then having the rug pulled out from under him and the rest of the cast when they got the news of the cancellation. Alex had made numerous appearances on various programs in April to promote Moonilght's return and what did he get for all of his hard work? Getting kicked in the teeth by Nina Tassler and CBS.

The problem with your article is that with the recession, high gas prices, etc. a single women looking for love and failing??? Well that's just too real and we need
more of a dose of fantasy, love , hope and romance.

But then,. if I were as rich as Chen, and Tassler, etc. I wouldn't care about any of the above. It's all about money......and to them we all seem like poor suckers that need
more of that angst ridden crap.

Robert, I have to say, that the exlist has nothing at all that one would find entertaining. I would not waste mine, nor my family's time watching something as pathetic as this. How many people are out there looking for love right now? Millions I would imagine. Do I need to watch another show about that? No. Frankly, it would bore me.
Now, am I a Moonlight fan? YES. It's not just a show about a vampire, it's about friendship, loyalty, sacrafice, and the ultimate impossible love. It has fantastic fight sequences, as well as the most tender of moments. And just to let you know, I am 32 years old, and a female, so I am the desired demographic.

It has fantastic fight sequences, as well as the most tender of moments. And just to let you know, I am 32 years old, and a female, so I am the desired demographic.

Robert ~ I am a jilted fan and like some of the other fans have already stated feel you are writing this garbage to get more Moonlight fans to post on your site. How pathetic that you can't even get status on your own but need to piggy back off of a great show and poke at its loyal fans.

The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd declared a final stake through the heart of "Moonlight" more eloquently than I could've:

"So, yes, dearest "Moonlight" fans, for a while there, you kept the dream of "Moonlight" alive. And the dream really appreciates your time together. It learned so much and wouldn't trade those months for anything. But now the dream is looking for opportunities elsewhere and talking about you in the past tense. The dream has moved on, changed its Facebook relationship status to "single" and is politely yet firmly asking you to quit calling."

"Doug, We get it already, you hated Moonlight..................................."

I don't think anything Doug has posted indicates that he hated Moonlight, just that it's cancellation is not the end of the world (or even a major tragedy) and it wasn't canceled because of some great conspiracy or because CBS hates its viewers. It was canceled because it did not bring in the viewers or the demos that they wanted. It was the weak link every Friday night, loosing viewers (in and out of the demo) from Ghost Whisperer that came back an hour later for Numb3rs. It didn't bring in the viewers (and thereby the ad dollars), so it was canceled. Period. End of story.

It's called show business because it's a BUSINESS. Decisions are made based on money, not based on how many bitter fans post on internet forums.

Shows are canceled every season, many of them much better than Moonlight could ever be. The world keeps turning, broadcast TV continues, and life in general goes on.

I'm looking forward to the Ex List. The writer worked on Veronica Mars, and she is FUNNY. Unfortunately, nothing will bring Moonlight back to CBS, and I'm not going to hold a grudge against a new show that has nothing to do with the old one. That would be pretty juvenile on my part. I know I don't matter, I just want to be entertained.

You mention that Lost and Heroes have attracted the coveted 19-49 demographic. You however did not mention that neither of them were dumped on a friday nite. Both have a fairly reasonable nite and hour to air. In addition, I take offense to this "19-49" age group that is supposidly so sought after. I am a 51 year old professional woman who has watched those programs and enjoyed them, but tire of them quickly as the story lines see to dissapear shortly after their supposed success. Do I then not count because I am 51? Seems to me I spend the same US dollars that everyone else does. Just because I am over 49 doesn't mean I want to watch 60 minutes.
I absolutely fell in love with Moonlight as did my 24 year old daughter, her 26 year old husband, my 26 year old Son and his 28 year old wife.
So I ask you, what good are all these demographics anyway. Moonlight has over 8 million extremely devoted fans..... I would think this would be the coveted demographic.

I just have one question. Why would anybody want to invest time, effort and their emotions in any new show any network puts on only to KNOW that the show will not be given a chance to succeed?

I love Moonlight on many different levels, all of which have been stated over and over again. I didn't mean to fall in love with Moonlight, but after seeing the first episode, I was hooked. Even if The Ex List was the greatest show since sliced bread, why would I want to chance that rejection and loss again? I now truly know better! Since I'm not a Nielsen viewer, my opinions or viewing habits don't interest anyone, and consequently whatever CBS puts on in place of Moonlight doesn't interest me.

As a recently retired teacher of 33 years, I am proud to say that I am one of the Moonlight Faithfuls, as you called us. I would like to point out to you that Moonlight had consistently won the Friday night, 9 p.m. time slot and the 18-49 demographic more times than not. Moonlight, with the handsome and charismatic Alex O'Loughlin as the lead, definitely had attracted numerous female fans.

I do agree with you that genre shows generally do have difficulty reaching the mainstream audiences. However, I strongly believe that any genre show would have attained solid footing if the network allows more time for the show to grow and more promotions. Unfortunately, Moonlight was killed off by CBS from the start by airing this show during the so-called "death slot" with minimal promotions, Genre shows like "X-File", "Buffy" and "Angel" only became successful after two to three years.

"Moonlight" was unlike other vampire shows. This was a character show, which happened to be a vampire who seek redemption by helping humans & fell in love with one. "Moonlight" was a show for all ages because the compelling storyline consisted of romance, action, mystery and humor. Have you watched any episode of "Moonlight"?

"Ex-List" may be to your liking. However, the entire plot sounded mindless to me. Since I am a happily married woman of 34 years, I don't think I can relate to "Ex-List".

Part of the reason why advertizers go after the 18-49 demo (and younger) is because they're harder to reach. Older people watch more television, thus an advertizer can go to just about any series and get that demograhpic. That's why there's no premium on it. The 18-34 demo, however, is much more fickle and doesn't watch as much tv. Thus, if a show does well in that demo (especially males, like Lost does), the networks can charge a premium because you can't get those viewers anywhere. It's not that advertizers don't necessarily value older viewers, it's just that they're everywhere. It's simple supply and demand.

C2H did much better than Ml in viewers and demo, and IMHO, CBS should not have cancelled it.

The bottom line is that viewers do not flock to CBS looking for hip, urbane series, and that's why most of them fail on that network. If anything, ABC has that segment of the audience locked up. That's not to say that ML would have done any better on another network - the odds of renewal for a new series are just 20%, so odds are that ML would have failed no matter where it aired. It's the television business. ML fans need to understand that the cancellation decision was not done just to pick on them. It wasn't some conspiracy between CBS and Nielsen because they hated this show. All networks want to see any one of their new series succeed because then they make money. It just wasn't in the cards for ML.

Well, I'm a single mother who has looked for love and still hasn't found it. Personally, I don't need to watch a show about another woman having similiar problems. The male gene pool is seriously under-rated. Most people know that. At least, most women know that. I don't want anything else closer to the reality I'm watching (i.e. that's why I don't watch reality shows...I have enough in my own life). However, since I was a young girl I have enjoyed the tales of vampires. Something more Anne Rice and less Blade. I don't need to see blood and guts personally. Moonlight was an instant hit in my household. Every Friday night, I would forgo any and all plans and tune into CBS starting at 8p.m. I thought I had the perfect line-up. I enjoy the paranormal genre. I started with Ghost Whisperer and went into Moonlight at 9p.m. If I happened to miss an episode from unseen events (my grandmother had a heart attack) as soon as the issues cleared I was on the Internet to catch up on my Moonlight. I fell in love with the acting and the cast. Personally, not that my vote matters, obviously, I'm not sure that I want to watch CBS programs anymore. They obviously don't care what the viewers want because they're not listening to the outcry of the fans. I remember when Scrubs was being cancelled and it managed to become un-cancelled (for lack of a better word). It could happen if they would listen. Why should I support tv shows on there network when they are so blatantly ignoring us?

"Threshold," anyone remember "Threshold?" It was the new hip potential demo drawing show that was in the "Moonlight" time slot three seasons ago. I can't quite remember. Did it even last a month in that time slot? Then CBS had a bright idea. They switched "Threshold" to Tuesday at 10 p.m. (EST) and put "Close to Home" (which CBS hoped would die) in the 9 p.m. (EST) Friday slot. "Threshold" died a quick death on Tuesday and amazingly "Close to Home" kept winning its time slot, but alas the demos were not good and the show was cancelled after its second year and was replaced with "Moonlight" which also was popular but did not have enough of the demo audience. My guess is that CBS is just looking for something, anything to come up with a magic number that just does not exist. If you are consistently winning this particular hour over a number of years but are not getting the group you want maybe the demo just has no desire to watch CBS at that hour. And maybe, just maybe you should be happy with what you have. Can't these networks find advertisers for the older skewing audience that has nothing to do with medicine? I personally would like to see advertisements for products I might buy, like electronics or cars or clothes or jewelry. Something frivolous. Not something that says, "You're old. You are going to die soon. Buy our medicines." Please.

And maybe, just maybe you should be happy with what you have. Can’t these networks find advertisers for the older skewing audience that has nothing to do with medicine? I personally would like to see advertisements for products I might buy, like electronics or cars or clothes or jewelry. Something frivolous. Not something that says, “You’re old. You are going to die soon. Buy our medicines.” Please.

I think if Moonlight had had another season, the show may have swallowed Ghost Whisperer and Numbers. Ex-list? How dorky. I never even bothered to watch Heroes or Lost--eventually got bored with Lost after the first season. Moonlight was like sitting down to a really good book. I can't say that for any of the other shows. Glad I quit watching CBS, too. Moonlight will profit from some really good movies down the road if a network doesn't pick it up. Moonlight fans aren't "jilted."

They're astonished!
Floored at the way Networks treat their fans.
Amazed at the shallowness of TV shows these days.
That's the crux of the problem.

Yes, Comradai, and almost all of my friends and family watch Lost. Therefore it must have 100 million viewers! Nielsen is wrong! Anecdotal evidence is just that: anecdotal. And usually pretty worthless.

For better or for worse, Nielsen ratings are an accurate measure of what people are watching on television.

Truth is, until ML got cancelled, I had never ever heard a peep about it anywhere.

Can't wait for the Ex-List!

I'm a 34 yo female and shop a lot...I am the demo, but not a nielson family. I'm not into other vamp shows, but Moonlight is my fav show of all time. CBS never really gave the show a chance. They had it in the worse possible time slot, yet it still did pretty well and it's ratings were consistant. I will not be watching the ex-list. I did not watch Friday night TV before Moonlight and I will not be watching it after. I am not going to invest my time into any new CBS shows...I'd prefer not to get slapped in the face again.

Dude....it's so completely OBVIOUS the only reason to write such ridiculous tripe is so you can rile up the fanbase and get some hits. Jackass.....

p.s. Maybe the numbers weren't as good as other CBS shows, but I am sure that you are well aware that Moonlight almost consistently won their timespot. Why don't you included that in your stupid article?

Could it also be that Moonlight was in it's 1st season (unlike GW & Numbers)

I would really like to see the stats on the amount of airtime publicity Moonlight got as well - cause I betting it was nowhere near what those other two shows got!

I don't understand this 18-49 demographic thing. My children are all in that demographic and all have good jobs and make lots of money, which they spend on themselves and their children. One of my sons and his wife do not watch TV (I'm not sure they even own one, even though he earns a 6 figure salary). My other son and his wife watch reality shows and she is particularly taken with the 'make over' shows. My two daughters don't watch much TV at all - they are too busy with children or dating themselves.

Now, I realize this is just one family, but the only people left in this family who would be watching much TV at all, of any genre, happen to be over 60. (All of the grandchildren are too busy with sports and dating or are too young for the demographic). So, what does CBS expect? When I asked my four children why they are not watching TV (and therefore not watching the advertising that supports the shows), they tell me they #1. don't watch TV at all or #2. are too busy. As for the advertising, only one could tell me about a commercial they remember seeing on TV and my youngest son saw it when watching the Super Bowl (it happened to be a beer he drinks and he also collects their steins). I just cannot believe that my family is so terribly different from other people.

Now, I realize that you are writing about Moonlight having the worst rating for the 18-49 demographic and you do not intend to insult those of us who are over 49. But, my response is, are the people in the much sought after demographic watching anything on Friday night (or any other night) and if they are, who knows if they are buying the products advertised. So many of the people in that demographic are struggling to pay their bills (with gas so high and inflation no longer creeping but leaping up), busy hauling their pre-teens to whatever sport is in season and trying to save enough money to send their kids to college.

I have much more discretionary income than all my kids put together. Not saying I earn more but I have more to spend on ME (and them) than they do. So, it would seem to me that the 50-75 demographic might be important, too. And I don't mean for purchasing such luxuries as protective undergarments! My husband and I are middle class - not rich, but have enough money to buy whatever we want whenever we want it (within reason - no Gulfstreams, yet). So, I am saying what a lot of people my age are saying - pay attention to us. We have money!! We spend money!! (There is not a U-haul truck following that hearse). I intend to leave this world almost broke.

As for Moonlight, it is a shame it was canceled, but you know what, it is good enough to be picked up by another network and I believe it will be. I didn't watch CBS much, anyway, and now I can say, I probably won't be watching it at all (I also don't watch 60 minutes). Oh, and I won't be watching that catchy new show on CBS called Swingtown. To me, they really did scrape the bottom of the barrel when they drug that one up. Guess I know why, now that I've learned that Mr. Moonves ditched his wife for a younger version. Swingtown probably doesn't bother him at all. As for the Ex-List, the story line is just too contrived. Sort of like New Amsterdam. At least vampires have been around for centuries and the genre is well understood (and liked by some). I'll take a well written drama and love story any day over some wacky story about a single 30 year old woman who can't seem to make up her mind about who she is in love with. The vampire twist just adds a little angst to the tale - will he or won't he? You know the rest.

I don’t understand this 18-49 demographic thing. My children are all in that demographic and all have good jobs and make lots of money, which they spend on themselves and their children. One of my sons and his wife do not watch TV (I’m not sure they even own one, even though he earns a 6 figure salary). My other son and his wife watch reality shows and she is particularly taken with the ‘make over’ shows. My two daughters don’t watch much TV at all – they are too busy with children or dating themselves.

Now, I realize this is just one family, but the only people left in this family who would be watching much TV at all, of any genre, happen to be over 60. (All of the grandchildren are too busy with sports and dating or are too young for the demographic). So, what does CBS expect? When I asked my four children why they are not watching TV (and therefore not watching the advertising that supports the shows), they tell me they #1. don’t watch TV at all or #2. are too busy.

And I don’t mean for purchasing such luxuries as protective undergarments! My husband and I are middle class – not rich, but have enough money to buy whatever we want whenever we want it (within reason – no Gulfstreams, yet). So, I am saying what a lot of people my age are saying – pay attention to us. We have money!! We spend money!! (There is not a U-haul truck following that hearse). I intend to leave this world almost broke.

As for Moonlight, it is a shame it was canceled, but you know what, it is good enough to be picked up by another network and I believe it will be. I didn’t watch CBS much, anyway, and now I can say, I probably won’t be watching it at all (I also don’t watch 60 minutes).
Holly - I would have to say that I would be one that doesn't like the Nielsen system. My reasoning for this is because of the lack of competition and no accountability. I will use as an example political polling. There are plenty of polls out there, but when an election comes around we can find out fairly easily which ones were accurate and which ones were not. Same goes for movies. I know which movie really was a block buster based on actual sales not because some entity tells me it was based on a single poll. I have no idea if a different system would change numbers for programs, but it would be interesting. However, advertisers seem to be happy with the system as it is and until they are unhappy nothing will change. Unless of course networks continue to lose viewers and they demand something different or more accurate. What that would be I have no idea, but I'm sure that with some competition there would be plenty of ideas out there.

Robert - about the article.....no comment. Thanks for the picture.
