As a very dedicated fan of soap operas, it really upsets me to know that you people think this way of the show. Obviously, ABC didn't care enough about the awards show to give it any kind of advertisement. Putting that Soapnet mess, MVP was a waste of time. It was boring and stupid. What ABC should've done and the academy should do in the future is to move the award show to the Fall or Spring, move it to Thursday nights and let it start at 9pm, after a new episode of CSI or Grey's Anatomy. That way the awards show has a very reliable lead-in and it is on a night that people actually take time to watch television. That online voting mess was scammed, because One Life to Live deserved the win but I digress. Someone please get back with me and let me know what you think of my ideas.

The Daytime Emmys rotate among networks--CBS aired it last year and used it as their hail and farewell to Bob Barker.

It was obvious that ABC looked at the Daytime Emmys this year as basically a promotional vehicle for SOAPnet ("MVP"'s regular net is SOAP)--and besides, over 9 million homes were watching "Rock Camp" on the sister Disney Channel, anyway.

Daytime soaps don't rate higher that what the emmy awards do, so wouldn't that be a win. Also, ABC decides to always put this show on fridays. This is much like the problem with the tony awards -- if no one watches the shows that are nominated -- why bother watching the awards show?

what was the new way of picking the nominees? I think that the emmys are the most valid awards shows because people actually submit episodes are are judged from those episodes. GH must give the best episodes every year.

The pathetic viewer numbers for the Daytime emmys mirrors the pathetic numbers for the daytime soaps. Back when Susan Lucci won in 1996 (?), the DE drew 14 million viewers. Now this.

As for MVP, it already failed in Canada (and has been cancelled), so why would any network in the US think that it would do any better there? It's truly a bizarre pick-up, considering that there are so many other Canadian shows that would probably do much better stateside, but are overlooked.

However, Canadian series are starting to make inroads in the US. Corner Gas, Davinchi's Inquest and Cold Squad (the original, the one that Cold Case ripped off) all air in US syndication, and Fox just signed up to do a remake of Little Mosque on the Prairie. There was a lot of hope in Canadian television circles that the strike would mean US networks would look north for programming (there was no strike here), but that didn't happen to a large extent. I still think a US network would do well to program a Friday or Saturday with Canadian programs. They'd probably get them dirt cheap, the quality is there, and none of the networks are airing anything of consequence anyway on Fridays or Saturdays.

ABC cut its own throat by making the Daytime Emmy show 2 hours. Thus the MVP numbers. They would have done better with a 20/20 about soaps or about talk shows, either before or after the Emmys. I was watching Keith Olberman during the first hour in one room and darting into another to see if anything interesting was happening on ABC. It wasn't. But honestly, I was only interested in the category that Anthony Geary was in and I knew that would be near the end. The real problem is, who cares about these categories? With the new weird way of picking the nominees and the fact that that was the ONLY vetting for each category the awards seemed rigged somehow. To facilitate what? sloth? there was no panel of experts to reexamine the work of the list of nominees! What was up with that? The process went from bad to totally bizarre. There is no real way to make all this fair anyway. No one can watch ALL the shows. General Hospital seems to pick just the right episodes to win consistently, usually in years when, overall, the writing is dreadful. The acting is always good, although this year you wouldn't know it since Geary was the only actor from GH to be nominated.

Here's a thought: next year just stream the show on the internet. Sell advertising or have product placement. Show decent clips from the nominees, preferably the clips or shows submitted by the nominees. You could watch in real time or download for later. Stream decent interviews with the winners. Let the winners thank people to their hearts content. Do something different.
