Nielsen Ratings Thursday, July 3: TVs Off at 10pm

Scoreboard FOX CBS NBC ABC CW
Total Viewers (million) 6.14 5.92 4.83 3.47 1.55
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 1.7/6 1.4/5 1.6/6 0.9/3 0.5/2

Fox's line up of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? and So You Think You Can Dance delivered narrow wins in both the viewership [6.14 million over CBS with 5.92 million] and the adults 18-49 demo [1.7 rating / 6 share vs. NBC's 1.6 rating / 5 share] for a slow pre-holiday Thursday.

We have only half hourly data, not show by show as usual, but we can still see that Last Comic Standing won the demo from 8-9, and Fifth Grader likely edged out a rerun of Million Dollar Password for the viewer win. 9-10 was Dance in the demo and a CSI rerun for viewers.

Three fresh episodes aired from 10-11 and the audience was very light all around as no show broke 5 million viewers. Hopkins, which Berman thought was "promising" with a 1.6 in the demo last week, looks to be DOA with a 1.1-1.2 in the demo last night. Its competition, Swingtown and Fear Itself didn't do much better. People seem to have been resting up to see the fireworks tonight.

  1. People weren’t resting up, they were out having a good time with a known day off ahead of them! Even SYTYCD? lost 2+ million viewers (over 20%) over last week and those eyes will surely be back next week.

Nothing can be concluded from last night’s numbers save perhaps that the networks could hardly be concerned with optimizing scheduling of fresh episodes of summer shows for a better night. The networks had to know viewing would be down, and clearly in the case of the 10pm hour the networks’ response across the board was “meh”.

  3. TEE VEE

Glad to see SleazyTown, I mean Swingtown, is crashing to Earth. That show is tasteless beyond belief – it belongs on Showtime or HBO after midnight. Last night I randomly watch 1 minute of it and there was a screening of Deep Throat in someones basement. Nice….. Ugh….

  4. Hot Pocket

I like Swingtown alot, but I’m going to be giving up on it due to low ratings. Hopefully Flashpoint is a huge performer on Fridays similar to either Ghost Whisperer or Numbers.

  5. Septbday

If you want ratings, bring back Moonlight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Sandy

Get over it, it’s dead and gone. And so is Jericho, for that matter.

    Sandy,

    To each his own………………

If you need to bring up Moonlight, bring it up when it’s relevant. And make strong convincing points based on logic. ” If you want ratings, bring back Moonlight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” isn’t going to cut it.

The only way Swingtown is getting a pick-up for next summer, forget the regular season, is if someone involved with the show has some REALLY scandalous pictures of Les Moonves.

  16. Holly, what about if someone on the show married Les in order to save it?

Oops! Already done by Julie Chen to save her show!

  17. Sandy

They could go higher up than Moonves. Molly Parker Redstone has quite a ring to it, doesn't it?

  18. Holly

Apparently, Swingtown's dropping ratings are not its only problem, the show is also having trouble finding and keeping advertisers. http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=…

  19. Swingtown has gotten continually better from week to week. Molly Parker and the other women OWN that show, and SLEAZY is not at all the best way to describe it. It's a coming of age show set in the 70's. Just who is coming of age is yet to revealed (the show is set up for the viewer to have mega-sympathy for the B.J. and Sam characters, but the ones who really seem to evolving before our eyes are Susan and Janet) . It is NOW quite involving, especially for an old 70's teen like myself. The truly SAD part is that it seems to be the BEST Show on TV that NOBODY is watching. If MOST of the 8.8 million folks it got the 1st week would give it another chance now that it's really hitting its stride, it just might make it. It deserves more time, perhaps a different time slot, a pick up for next season!
