NBC won the viewership race Sunday night with a mere 5.95 million average [close over CBS with 5.84 million], but tied Fox [which had only reruns] for the demo adults 18-49 crown with a 1.5 rating / 5 share.
The premiere of ABC's High School Musical: Get in the Picture pulled in very disappointing numbers with only 4.04 million viewers and an embarrassing 1.1/4 in the demo. Big Brother lost about 10% of its viewers and demo adults from last week. Not a good trend. NBC's Dateline continued to give a relatively good return in viewers and demo on what must be a modest investment.

On the basis of nothing other than stellar past success of HSM 1 & 2, the total numbers for the reality series premiere surprise me. However, the 18-49, 18-34 or anything over 18 really don’t surprise me since it is a show targeted at High School age people. Given that, I think 25% of the audience being over 18 is probably well within expectations
I actually saw a bit of HSM last night — it was AWFUL! Not sure what exactly ABC was thinking here, but they took a pretty good concept and ruined it…what a drag.
Perhaps this is second guessing, but a High School Musical-related show without the characters that we know and love looks like a concept that will have just as much success as Grease 2. (Saw this post via Robert’s FriendFeed, by the way.)
If they were going to do a HSM reality show to get in the movie, it should have been for a major role in the film. Instead, this is just to be in the final video or something- rather than finding a star. I’m not saying it would have made that much of a difference in the ratings, but it’s possible. At least with the Grease reality show, they were searching for the leads.
Rob D/OntarioEmp: I’m too uniformed when it comes to HSM to speak with conviction here. — I’m probably not ashamed to admit that!
Rob, if your point is that nobody watched because the stakes are too low (tiny role vs. starring role) that makes perfect sense to me. But in light of that it seems dumb to have run it on the network — why not just run that on the Disney channel?
ABC’s ratings are gonna be horrible tonight. No Bachelorette to soften the blow.
Sandy, you are likely right. They may have the lowest rated night of the summer for a network running 3 hours of new programming.
HSM is the most overhyped nonsense to come along since last summers Pirate Master which hoped to get in on the Pirate craze created by Pirates of the Carribean (didnt help matters that the 3rd movie stunk) Hopefully they will overexpose HSM even more so it will burn out and vanish like a meteor burning up in the atmosphere.
The cast of HSM will end up like the cast of Saved By The Bell. Though that show went on for much longer than HSM will.
