ABC's High School Musical Flunks Spanish

Scoreboard CBS FOX NBC Uni ABC CW
Total Viewers (million) 7.47 7.11 5.35 3.76 3.21 1.21
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.3/7 2.3/7 1.7/5 1.7/5 1.1/3 0.5/2

On Monday night when ABC aired 3 hours of new programming, Spanish language Univision beat ABC for average viewers 3.76 million to 3.21 million and thrashed them in demo adults 18-49 with a 1.7 rating / 5 share to ABC's 1.1/3. Univision easily beat ABC from 8-9 [Al Diablo con los Guapos vs. High School Musical: Get in the Picture] and from 9-10 [Fuego en la Sangre vs. Wanna Bet]. Only from 10-11 did ABC get any consolation, edging out a viewership win with The Mole over Christina, but settling for a demo tie. I guessed yesterday that ABC's results last night might be bleak, but it was even worse than I expected. I wonder if this will be reported elsewhere in the English media? [Not by the NYT, who has ABC "fourth" for the night]

As usual this summer, the overall Monday nightly race was between CBS and Fox reruns. This week, CBS edged Fox for viewers [7.47 million vs. 7.11 million] while tieing in the demo with a 2.3 rating / 7 share. NBC's unscripted shows [American Gladiators, Nashville Star, Dateline NBC] performed about as well as they have all summer putting NBC in third for viewers for the night and a tie for third in the demo with Univision, and, as usual, the CW went unwatched.

  1. Sandy

How could you not have done ‘High School flunks Spanish’ as the title?

  2. Sandy, I love it!

  3. I agree, it’s the sub-head!

  4. Are the numbers for ABC an all-time low for Original Programming??

Where would ABC if not for WIPEOUT right now?

  5. TVa, it may very well be, but after looking through our available data I don’t think we have the information necessary to know that.

  6. Sandy

    I have power now!

  7. THE_Anonymous

ABC had such a horrid night that “The Mole” ratings look good in comparision to the rest of the night :X

  8. James Hibberd says it’s the lowest rated Monday in 3 years:

    http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/07/high-school-mus.html

“High School Massacre” also a great title….

  9. In post-Columbine America, I don’t think “High School Massacre” would work.

Scary thought, could I be the more sensitive one on this?

    Yikes!

  10. What in the world did ABC have back then that did WORSE??

It had to be an all-repeat night, would be my guess.

  11. Rob D.

Who are these people making decisions at ABC? As we said before, “The Mole” wasn’t popular when I watched the first 2 seasons. I would have bet anything it would have tanked, which is why I didn’t watch this time. Speaking of betting, doesn’t anyone at ABC remember the Fox show “Banzai”. That show had the same concept as “Wanna Bet” but it was funnier (minus the celebrities). Banzai did terrible ratings. It’s like they have a mole working at ABC.

  12. Anon

Wasn’t it 3 years ago that ABC had that HORRIBLE show called “The One” — where they recorded some of their lowest ratings ever?

  13. Doug

Yup. The One struggled to reach 2.5 million viewers. So it has been worse…

  14. Sandy

The One aired on Tuesdays though, and aired 2 years ago, so it isn’t the show referred to by James Hibberd.

  15. Alex

    Anyone know how closer did?

  16. Alex, we won’t get data for yesterday’s airing of Closer directly from Nielsen until a week from today. I haven’t seen it published anywhere else on the web yet.

  17. Alex, Mediaweek is just out with The Closer data,

TNT’s flagship series The Closer got the week off to a strong start for the network, serving up 7.06 million total viewers Monday night (July 21) in the 9 p.m. time slot.

The second episode of season four delivered 2.81 million adults 25-54 and 2.16 million viewers 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research live-plus-same-day data.

  18. cesarrr

OK,. Univision beats ABC. But thats only because it is still THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION for hispanics. They are still not affected with the new “entertainment sources” (internet, TIVO, satellite TV, PPV, video games).

  19. MOLE WATCHER

PEOPLE NEED TO WATCH THE MOLE!!! SERIOUSLY!
