Flashpoint has been renewed in Canada, but CBS hasn't said either way yet. It might depend on how these last two episodes do.

Hello All.. I am curious if the show Flashpoint is coming back on. Does anyone whether it made back to next season. I hope they decided to give it a chance to explore its stories. Please, let me know. Thanks, TT!

I'm with you, Holly, though most of the biggest scripted cable shows air exclusively in the summer, seemingly deliberately capitalizing on the vast wasteland of summer fare on the broadcast nets.

Well, you could argue that pretty much all "reality" TV is scripted, but that's a whole other discussion ;-)

Summer on broadcast TV is a wasteland of repeats and cheesy reality shows, but it doesn't have to be. New shows that were aired in the summer were generally burn-offs of shows they didn't think would make it during the regular season. The cable nets have proven that it is possible to air quality (watchable) scripted series in the summer. The broadcast nets need to follow suit, even if it means starting with a show that gets only "neutral" ratings. If I were CBS, I would keep Flashpoint as a summer-only show and add one or two new shows each summer. Instead of making big announcements about year-round scheduling that turns out to be more reality shows (yes, I'm looking at you NBC), just start premiering a couple of shows a year during the summer, and resist the temptation to move them to the regular season.

I couldn't tell you the last successful summer show that wasn't a reality show that made the transition to the regular season. I suppose one could argue that Hell's Kitchen is scripted though ;-)

I thought new scripted shows in the summer were extinct on the broadcast nets. When was the last successful summer show on a broadcast net? I see this more as an attempt at starting something new rather than the tail end of something old. Maybe that's why I'm more forgiving of the lower numbers.

Holly, again, I don't think Flashpoints numbers are "bad", I think it's neutral, but I think neutral isn't great. Though I would concede the total viewer numbers were pretty impressive, if holding the lead-in of a repeat of CSI is something that impresses.

As far as AI vs. DH, I'd knock no show that got a 3.0 or better rating in the 18-49 demo during the regular season. For the summer, I'd set the bar at 2.0. You and CBS may both set that bar lower than I.

For CBS, outside of some of its lineup of Monday night repeats (which perform admirably), Big Brother is the only thing that performs well in the demo. I brought up the scripted vs. unscripted because it seems like *new* scripted shows airing in the summer will be extinct soon on all the broadcast nets unless the bar gets set lower than a 2.0 in the demo.

While I don't think Flashpoint is doing great, I don't think its performance is as bad as you seem to.

I don't really see why the fact that the shows that beat it in the demo were reality shows matters. Do you knock Desperate Housewives because American Idol gets better numbers? While I would be quite pleased if the vast majority of "reality" shows got horrible ratings and were canceled (the exceptions mainly being on Discovery), the fact is, they get good ratings, particularly in the demo.

Especially given that this is a co-production (making it significantly cheaper for CBS) and how well it is apparently doing in Canada, I could see this coming back next summer (if it maintains these numbers).

Unless I'm missing a show somewhere, only 3 scripted shows premiered on broadcast networks this summer. Fear Itself never got off the ground. Swingtown has officially bombed (only holding the 1.3 demo from its repeat lead-in last night). Flashpoint has gotten respectable (though not spectacular) ratings so far. If CBS wants to provide real, year-round scheduling, then they need to start somewhere. Flashpoint could work as that starting point.

Ok, so the 50+ may not be scarce but we (ok I'm in that group) have a lot more available income to spend. I also disagree with the thought that we spend more time in front of the TV set, I think its less. Also Robert, watch The Burn Notice if you get a chance. It's fairly good. Flashpoint, I havn't seen and can't find the time to bother.

Grams, it's not that they don't care about you. It's that 50+ is a commodity when it comes to availability. No matter what the nets program, they'll get a good chunk of 50+ and so the advertisers can reach that demographic seemingly very easily any time of day, with any show, on any network.

18-34 year old and 18-49 year old viewers are not as widely available or watching as much television in general. Because they are harder to reach, advertisers will pay more to reach them. It's simple supply and demand -- the supply of 50+ is not scarce.

I hope that someone at the network actually thinks enough of the older folks, myself included, to continue broadcasting 'Flashpoint'. Why is it only the 18-49 year olds important? I know money for the sponsors but why is it perfectly acceptable to say that the tastes of an older audience should be dismiss, that what we like is note as important.

Winning the demos must matter. Consider that the Hollywood Reporter only reports ratings based on the 18-49 numbers in its overnight writeups. MediaLife Magazine also only focuses on demos typically.

From that view, demo viewers matter more than total viewers (which isn't the same thing as saying total viewers isn't important).

The CW rarely has an absolute win in any demo. In the 18-34 demo, Hopkins outperformed Flashpoint and that isn't relative to its total viewers, it had more 18-34 viewers than Flashpoint had on an absolute basis.

"Burn Notice on USA, which may have outperformed Flashpoint in both the 18-49 and 18-34 demos with several million fewer viewers."

What is the difference if a show has the same Demo rating and another, but More total viewers? Isn't it about getting the rating number as high as possible, not the percentage of one demo vs another? If this WAS the case, then the CW would be the #1 network on TV.

As for Flashpoint, and I am not a viewer of the show, a 1.8 demo rating would have placed it in the top 25 of all shows last week. A 1.8 rating should also be a in the top 25 range again this week.
