I just watched the season's third episode of Mad Men. What, you didn't think I'd really make it the whole weekend without at least one post about it, did you!? I watched live again. I have to admit I really look forward to the show. I imagine the ratings will be worse than last week, though not hugely so because of the Olympics. But when you have a relatively small base of viewers to begin with, you have fewer to lose.
To be fair, I didn't think this was a great episode, really, but... There was one scene that floored me. It was brief, and I don't want to give any of it away. It was metaphor and literal sex used as power, as if to say, "OK, but just remember who's f------- who!" It may have been both the most pornographic and the most erotic thing I've ever seen on television without anyone getting the least bit naked.
If you can get over the fact that parts of Don Draper are rotten to the core (and I believe if I were as good looking the resulting opportunities might have me winding up just as rotten) it was an extremely powerful scene. Sure, I found myself thinking, "OMG, I cannot believe they just showed that on TV!" But it worked so damn well. If you can get over all the rottenness.
Personally for purposes of television viewing, I can definitely get over the rottenness, and having done so...wow.
