The Dallas Cowboys may not have won a playoff game since 1996, but they triumphed in the ratings on Sunday night (and beat the Packers too) as NBC's football line up averaged 16.571 million viewers and a dominant 6.8 rating for demo adults 18-49 and a 6.1 rating for demo adults 18-34. ABC's Emmy lead line up managed second in the 18-49 demo with a 3.2, and Fox, surprisingly, with animated repeats only managed a tie for second with ABC in the 18-34 demo with a 2.6 rating.
Sunday Night Football was the most watched show of the night peaking between 9-10pm with 20.693 million viewers, and steamrolling the demos in each of its hours. Keep in mind that live sports event fast affiliate overnight results are subject to revisions because of their measurement methods, see below.
The 60th Annual Emmy Awards average of 12.242 million viewers was 6% below last's years final viewership of 13.0 million. I thought it might fall much further. It was a distant second across the board to football in each of its hours, and embarrassingly close to a Cold Case repeat in its first hour. The Emmy lead-in, Jimmy Kimmel's Big Night of Stars, was anything but big with only 4.630 million viewers and rock bottom demo adults ratings of 1.3 (18-49) and 0.9 (18-34).
The only other new show for the night, 60 Minutes, beginning its 40th season, got a football distorted result of 17.287 million viewers and a 4.9 adults 18-49 rating and a 3.9 adults 18-34 rating. That's likely to be significantly adjusted before the final numbers are out.
That wraps up the last night of the annual 2007-8 television year. It's 2008-9 now folks, let the games begin!

Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Overnight Ratings: Local metered-market ratings service of Nielsen Station Index (NSI) in which household ratings and shares are provided to clients the morning following the day or evening of telecast. While routinely used for "next day" immediate analysis, these fast affiliate ratings are by process inaccurate for programs that air live across a network since they represent affiliate time period performance. For example, last night's 10-11pm affiliate #'s would reflect 10pm on the East Coast but also 10pm on the West Coast which for a live event would not represent the same broadcast or portion of the broadcast.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
LIVE+SD: The number that watched a program either while it was broadcast OR watched via DVR on the same day [through 3AM the next day] the program was broadcast.
