ABC Broadcast Posts Highest Total Viewer and
Demo Deliveries in Nearly Two Months
"World News" Is Only Evening Program to Display Gains
in Both Categories Week to Week
In the final full week of the presidential race, more viewers in the key adult demographic turned to ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson" than any other evening newscast. For the week of October 27, the ABC broadcast ranked #1 among Adults 25-54, outperforming NBC's "Nightly News" 2.2/8 to 2.1/8. Among Total Viewers, "World News" averaged 8.34 million, placing second by just 20,000. This marks ABC's best Total Viewer and demo performances in nearly two months (since week of 9/8/2008).
Week to week, "World News" was the only evening newscast to display growth among both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54, increasing 3% and 6%, respectively. Additionally compared to this week last year, "World News" grew 5% among key demo viewers.
Compared to the competition last week, "World News" posted its largest demo advantage (910,000) over CBS' "Evening News" in more than three years (since week of 10/3/2005). ABC also posted its largest Total Viewing lead (2.33 million) over CBS in 6 weeks (since week of 9/15/2008).
For the eighth consecutive week, "World News" placed first among Women 25-54, averaging a 2.4/9.
On last week's "World News," Charles Gibson interviewed both presidential candidates: Senator Obama in Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday and Senator John McCain in Hanoverton, Ohio on Friday. The broadcast also featured in-depth reports and analysis from ABC News' political team, plus the latest reaction from voters around the country.
On the digital front, "World News with Charles Gibson" continues to display impressive growth online since its relaunch in August. According to Omniture, ABC's digital measurement program, for the week of October 27 the "World News" section was up 50% in page views and up 329% in video views compared to the same week last year. The central component of the new web page is the revamped "World Newser" blog (http://blogs.abcnews.com/theworldnewser/), which features contributions from the senior staff on a wide range of issues, including culture, technology, politics and life around the globe. The "World Newser" was up 50% in page views compared to the prior week.
