Here is how much a spot costs.

Gossip Girl $62,139
One Tree Hill $67,902
90210 $58,347
Privileged $33,305
America’s Next Top Model $103,714
Stylista $48,942
Smallville $54,323
Supernatural $37,982
Everybody Hates Chris $44,533
The Game $29,583

http://adage.com/images/random/0908/10-SpotCost-100608.pdf

The CW could charge a lot more for Supernatural and Smallville if they didnt make their intentions about their target demo clear. Cant The CW just target like the 18-34 or 18-49 demo? Why do they have to be so narrow minded?

This must've made Nick wince when he heard about it...

<i>"The Graysons" was set to serve as the tentpole of this year's CW development slate. With that project out of the picture, the CW has been hunting for another big-ticket title to prep for next season.</i>

And so...they are consider using an episode of Gossip Girl as a backdoor pilot <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117996875.html?categoryid=14&cs=1&nid=2562" rel="nofollow">to a spinoff </a>

Robert, if Dawn is still around I see them sticking to it, but trying new shows (see MELROSE PLACE). If not and the network still exists I see some new shows like the MARTIAN MANHUNTER show that DC/guys from SMALLVILLE are proposing (whether or not SMALLVILLE returns) and possibly THE UNIT from CBS plus more universally aimed programming.

Bill, and that new President will be right.

I think that quote's a reasonable guess *if* Dawn's still at the helm. If she goes, the new President will not be referring to anything she did as making sense ;)

a little "dark comedy", but I could see "Proposal Rock" as a new CW show:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/12/04/national/a154307S28.DTL&tsp=1

We're still waiting on some data to do some analysis on year over year growth among 18-34 female viewers. But purely for the purposes of prognostication, I believe CW will abandon the approach next season (though Gossip Girl, ANTM etc will stick around) and the press release announcing it will blame it on the economy. Something like:

<i>“In a booming economy, the strategy of pursuing a young female audience made sense, but in the current economy advertisers want to reach a broader audience...”</i>

Nick, if that's the order in the 18-49 C3 data, I agree. For the most recent Live+7 data we have (I didn't bother looking at the 18-49 s-t-d for live+7) SN had 225K more viewers with 60K fewer DVR viewers -- which seemingly would lead to better C3 for SN.

[edit] I actually looked at the live viewing only 18-49 S-T-D data because it still seems like the best proxy we have available to us for C3 purposes. It's fairly close, GG: 1.743mm to SN's 1.651mm

Robert, I can tell you that SUPERNATURAL is the CW's 3rd highest show in the C3 ratings behind ANTM and SMALLVILLE for the season. For an evening THURSDAY night on the CW likely pulls the most revenue.

Nick, ok, I am tracking with you on the late start and am aligned with your assessment. I'd love to know the ad revenue per show for Gossip Girl vs. say Supernatural (similar overall numbers, though GG is ahead by 20% or so in 18-49 viewers, and I'm guessing even more ahead w/18-34 year old females).

Reaper was pulling much better 18-49 numbers than Privileged on a spot check of some of last year's episodes. the season to date average for last year only has it 11% ahead, but included repeats -- I looked at data for several original airings and all were around or above 1.5 million 18-49 year olds and one was close to 2 million, but my "research" was extremely cursory.

Though I can't make the case based on data that attempting to target 18-34 year old females is a mistake, I would agree with you (and for that matter, Bill) that whatever premiums the 18-34 female target may be worth, I'd find it very hard to believe they'd be enough <s>to make Privileged more profitable than Reaper</s> to generate more revenue for Privileged than Reaper (knowing nothing about costs, I don't have an opinion about profitability) assuming it can do as well as it did last year.

and I should mention I don't think the sabotage will work. I think REAPER will come back as strong as before after a few weeks. Which will just show how stupid an idea of alienating an entire sex in a demo is.

Robert, I don't think Tuesday night at 9 is a bad time slot for it. It was the same time slot it had last year with a weaker lead in. My point is that it's coming back in MID MARCH! When it was supposed to air in January. Waiting that long to bring a show back appears to me to be sabotage. The show doesn't fit Dawn's vision and her treatment of it shows that.

Sadly her vision is likely to destroy the network. Moonves is considering pulling the plug on the network and not just on her.

Nick, while I don't share the same level of frustration for Dawn/CW that you and others do, with Privileged going off air, it *does* sort of seem like that. but the question is, where else could you put Reaper? Assuming that the CW has no plans to program Sundays with original programming -- and I do make that assumption...

The only other place you really could stick Reaper is with ANTM where Stylista currently airs -- and even if they did that seems like they would put ANTM on at 9pm and still throw Reaper under the Idol bus.

It doesn't seem well paired with ANTM (which is now the CW's best performer). Anything else and you have to screw with Monday where GG and OTH seem to work well (at least for the CW) or Thursdays (which also seems to work well for the CW, but clearly is a night where CWisn't worried about 18-34 females). I suppose a case could be made for screwing with Thursdays, but would *you* screw with Thursdays for the remainder of this year if they handed you the keys to the CW? That only leaves Friday's at 9pm -- not a wonderful slot either.

I'm still amused by the REAPER info. It's as if it was brought back against the will of someone who is now trying to make sure it doesn't make their other decisions look bad. Lets forget the ratings of the new shows aren't as good as REAPER.

Well, I think it could be great for the CW to keep Surviving Suburbia and put it on its Friday night since both Everybody Loves Chris and The Game is under-preforming. If they were to promote SS they could have a slight shot at getting viewers tuned in that night. Sure SS will probably not tune in viewers from their target demo, but I think it really can get SOME viewers...
This could be crucial because of the WWE move, last week MNT actually beat CW in the 18-49 demo, so the CW really have to push a new and PROMOTED friday night line-up.

Surviving Suburbia was a Media Rights Capital show. It is unknown about its status since The CW & MRC terminated their partnership.

What happened to all the other shows The CW promoted in the preview - Surviving Suburbia etc....

Gutted about the 13 episode order of Reaper. Typical CW though.

CW confirms there will be a cycle in the spring. no date for the premiere has been set yet, but I was led to believe that the assumption that it will air Wednesdays at 8pm after 13: Fear is Real is through is correct. I don't know how many eps of 13: Fear is Real there are -- originally there were going to be 8 -- I'm guessing that is still correct but that is info from last spring when it was reportedly going to air last summer.
