Football ruled the night, with NBC's Sunday Night Football coverage of the New York Giants vs. the Dallas Cowboys leading NBC to an across the board victory. Kudos to NBC for being able to pull off the post-game interview with Romo, Witten and T.O. The only thing missing was "So Happy Together" playing in the background.
CBS came in second fueled by approximately 30 minutes of football overrun (Steelers/Ravens in most of the country), 60 Minutes, and the Survivor: Gabon finale. Because of the overrun and not thinking I'd get the data any other way, today's data is half hourly. It is easier to make sense of the CBS data that way, but please keep in mind that due to the nature of how live events (the football games) are measured, both NBC's and CBS' numbers will change significantly in the finals.
Not much else to talk about as Fox ran with a night of animation reruns (I'm sure some of you felt like you still didn't get quite enough King of the Hill), ABC went with reruns of The Santa Clause 2 and Desperate Housewives and CW ran with reruns of Jericho and the movie Spaceballs. Normally I'd say those numbers should absolutely put to rest any notion of a Jericho revival. But we know that's not going to happen. May the schwartz be with you.

Nielsen TV Ratings: ©2008 The Nielsen Company. All Rights Reserved.
Definitions:
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.
Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)
Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

JERICHO reruns are rapidly heading for extinction – for a 3rd time, 4th if you count getting reruns axed on SCI FI Network. Average was under 1 million. Ive heard several local affiliates have already dumped Jericho and airing syndicated local programming. The key 18-49 demo is imploding even faster. Even reruns of King of the Hill are getting 4 million viewers. I put the odds of CW airing all the Jericho episodes (29 of them) at 1 chance in 666,666,666. Of course the Jericho Rangers will come up with every excuse in the book to explain it all away including gems like “Nielsen isnt counting everyone”, “Ice storms knocked out peoples power” and “Aliens from planet Klaatu are blocking the signals”.
Maybe MOONLIGHT will be next to get a shot at the 7pm timeslot?
How sad it is for you to rain on our parade. It saddens me that scripted TV is the latest thing to become a dinosaur. I am 47 years old and JERICHO is SLAM DUNK the show i have ever seen IN MY LIFE.

A couple local notes that may affect ratings just a tic:
Although Steelers/Ravens ran on CBS, the local post-game was on the CW here in Pittsburgh. Jericho was pre-empted to make room for it. That happens a lot in the Burgh; CW and CBS affiliates share news and sports teams. Jericho was also pre-empted New York for the Billy Graham Christmas special. I honestly don’t know how all this affects ratings.
I understand there are several markets that have very limited CW access? Central California, and some areas along Ohio/Indiana border, have a tough time getting the CW. But that’s another story for another time…
That Cowboys/Giants game was a wicked one, and it deserved to win the night!
Sadly, that “most of the country” that saw the exciting and controversial end of the Steelers/Ravens game didn’t include the Bay Area, where we saw Oakland calling time outs as the game was ending and they were down by 20+ to NE. I nearly threw something at the TV.
^ Yeah, I hear ya. I HATE the raiders. “Commitment to Awfulness”
I live in northern CA and hope they would black out all Raiders game. They are absolutely HORRIBLE!!
I’m surprised that “The Santa Clause 2 (R)” did good against heavy competition.
When you look at the damn ratings you’ll notice that the NFL is a damn ratings beast and there’s nothing out there that can stop it.
What a great day of football all day yesterday into the drama of the Sunday Night game.
Would somebody please pull the plug on The Can’t Watch Network (The CW). When you air Spaceballs, that’s absolutely pathetic.
Obvious Jericho repeats on the CW aren’t a ratings hit. Is anyone really surprised? That ship has all kinds of sailed. Everyone who was a die hard nut sending fan has seen it and everyone else has no reason to take up a cancelled show. Jericho is done. Toast! Not coming back. Ever.
It must however, seeing as how the CW is in cahoots with CBS, be fairley cheap programming not doing much worse than the formerly original programming. So can we stop acting as if this says ANYTHING about Jericho, that we did not know already? Please?
Damn it must’ve been horrible to had watch the awful Oakland Raiders who’s commitment to being just as bad as the Lions has them losing to the Patriots by more than 20 points and calling timeouts.
Glad we got the great Steelers/Ravens game, which was great!
Got a question are the Raiders a real football team anymore?
So I’m glad to see NBC do so well. (The peacock always seems to have the best shows) but this seemed like a default. What was football up against besides the SUrvivor Finale?
Hot Pocket, when The CW looks around and sees it’s up against not only football, but the finale of Survivor (Sugar
) they probably realize that night is a lost cause and just air something cheap.
Regardless if Jericho is coming back or not the show is excellent and the reruns are probably cheaper than airing original programming so I see no reason for them pulling them from the slot at least until next season.
I will forever be a Jericho Ranger. Jericho was my favorite show on television and remains so. I’d rather watch repeats of it than new “reality” programming and endless crap game shows. Don’t even get me started on the dubious popularity of comedies like The New Adventures of Old Christine or Kath and Kim (a golden globe nod for K&K? Seriously? JESUS.)
Luckily the Denver game ended early so I could see real football! I always get so frustred this time of year being forced to watch Denver or Dallas games instead of the meanful games the national audience watches.
The raiders are much worst than the Lions regardless of the records. The Lions have been competitive in almost all their games. The raiders have been abysmal in a good majority of their games. Whoever pays to go the game are either too committed and have a few screws loose.
The raiders are the 1st team in history to lose at least 11 games in 6 consecutive seasons.
Oakland raiders’ new motto: “Commitment to Dreadfulness”
(note I intentionally did not capitalize the ‘r’ in raiders)
Most Raider fans who go to the games were on FX’s Sons of Anarchy this past season and based on the people I see in the hell hole, they do have screws loose. Too bad NFL commissioner Roger Godell had to go to the game yesterday instead of Baltimore or Dallas.
Jesse I hope that isn’t the case for The CW b/c if it is, imagine what they’ll put on against the AFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl. Child’s Play or Robocop, terrible MGM movies like that. If they want to play a good MGM movie, just play the Bond franchise and they’ll easily get 2 million viewers out of that.
MyNetworkTV is setting network records with their movies and their programming the right ones like Home Alone getting 3.8 million viewers this past Wednesday or National Lampoon’s Vacation.
I think the Raiders’ problems are figurative, and perhaps literal, insanity on the part of Al Davis. In my youth (20-30 years ago), I was a big fan of the younger Davis, but he’s just sad now.
PTI had an item recently about how Davis’ current behavior might or might not tarnish his “legacy”. Tony & Mike agreed that it wouldn’t, but I think that conclusion might only hold for people close to Wilbon’s age [50] and older. Younger people have little or no memory of the AFL Davis, the swashbuckling, in your face winning Davis, they only have known the crazy Davis and that’s how they will remember him.
TK and Wilbon are right, at least if the losing ways don’t continue another 10 years. The thing about legacies is they’re very long-lasting.
Barring some fit of true insanity where Davis runs onto the field wearing nothing but his signature Members Only jacket, syringe in hand and injects his players with performance enhancers, 100 years from now, when everyone alive today is dead, his Wikipedia page won’t likely dwell much on the especially poor performance the last six years running.
I’d agree, legacy secure for people over 45+history books.
I still like the Raiders even though I’m not from the Bay Area, its just great to poke fun at them from time to time.
Its sad to see what the Raiders have become especially Al. Back in the 60s and 70s this was one of the dominate franchises and the kids growing up in this decade have to watch a bad team just like the Lions, but I do see these two franchises dominating or improving in the next decade.
The game between the NYG and Dallas was dull and boring. NYG could not get anything going on offense. The only exciting thing was seeing both Manning and Romo get smashed to a pulp (really… how many times were both quarterbacks hit).
