I actually feel really sorry for the CW. Forgive me if I sound like I’m repeating what 5 million other people out there may have already said, but if the CW had picked up shows that had an established audience (I won’t mention specific titles, out of fear that I might start a riot) instead of that MRC deal/ratings nightmare, they would’ve gotten some pretty decent (by their standards) numbers on Sundays.

Dawn Ostroff deserves an award for the worst network executive ever in American television history.

Jesse-YOU might not know anyone who uses the print TVG listings (though you probably do and just don’t know it; it’s not the sort of thing most people would typically tend to know about friends/acquaintances), but of course some people like them. And yes, there are other ways to get schedules, but I prefer to have a paper copy of the schedule so I can mark what I want to watch/tape each night ahead of time. My local onscreen guide only tells what’s on for an hour in advance, making it impossible to plan ahead for even just the next night. Plus, it scrolls verrrrry slowly through about 100 channels. In short, it’s virtually useless. I also like to get TVG for the news and interviews.

Anyway, if the magazine is going to be published,whether or not YOU read it or care at all, and it’s going to include a schedule, it only makes sense that they include a listing each night for one of the most highly watched networks. It takes up just a sliver of space on each night’s grid.

Through 2013 is four more seasons. Considering the way shows can easily go from hits to nothing in one season, ABC would be a fool to sign that deal. Two more seasons I could understand. Four I cannot.

All you people worried about the ‘low’ ratings ‘Desperate Housewives’ pulled in…you must be out of your minds to think ABC will ever reject an offer to extended the show until 2013. It’s still by far one of their highest rated shows. It pulled in 13.7 million viewers despite being against unusual competition like ‘The Golden Globes’ and ’24′. As far as scripted shows go, ‘Desperate Housewives’ is their #1 show in both viewers, and even the 18-34 demo (it’s starting to outpace ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in that category).

I wouldn’t worry about DH. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon. It was the show I watched last night, too. I don’t care about the Golden Globes, and I passed on 24 because during previous seasons I invariably got tired of the show about halfway through its run. It’s a good show, sure, just not really my thing.

Also, about a week ago, I asked about TV Guide dropping the CW from its print grid listings. Tonight I found this article ( http://www.philly.com/inquirer/columnists/20090110_Dave_on_Demand___Mentalist__showed_powers_only_in_ratings.html ):

I noticed over the last few weeks in TV Guide that listings for the CW, home of Smallville, 90210 and other imperishable pleasures, are completely missing from the prime-time grid.

The network declined to comment. Scott Crystal, TV Guide’s CEO and president, framed it as a space issue.

“There are now hundreds of channels on television and we can only accommodate approximately 70 in our primetime grids,” he e-mailed. “In the past few weeks, the following networks have not appeared in the grids: MTV, CW, DIY and TV Guide Network.”

But the CW is the only broadcast outlet in that bunch. And it simply doesn’t make sense to drop it while continuing to run listings for far more marginal competitors like ION and MyNetworkTV.

My response: Something does stink, and it’s the answer given by Scott Crystal. Many networks must get a fraction of the viewership of the CW, surely, yet they still are listed. What makes them so much more worthy than the CW? I’d like an answer to that question, though it’ll probably be another lame one.

as much as i love 24, no surprise this show fell to that low. Reason: Writers Strike! Like most shows this season the writers strike just kill momenteum from last season. The difference, 24 is a brand and is consistant entity for FOX.

As far as the globes, some of the films that were nominated and won (SLumdog Millioniare for example), no one has seen. Also the event seem upbeat but in a low key sort of way.

As I said just the overrun of the NFL would do the job for CBS.

Desperate Housewives will return to its normal levels after the SUper Bowl.
I hope ABC isn t dumb to put Desperate Housewives up agaisnt Steelers-Ravens Next Sunday night. All the networks should run repeats,. CASE CLOSED. That game will do a 39 rating.

Are you serious? CBS has the best shows? On what planet do they think that?

Almost everything on CBS is a retread of CSI, or an over-the-hill reality show (Surivor, Amazing Race). They have a few mediocre comedies…but otherwise they reall suck.

Most interesting ratings night of the year – maybe season – sofar. Watched five seconds of Globes – long enough to see Zuck’s smiling face and 30 Rock win again. ( Whatever. ) Never watch 24 but thought numbers OK. DH – intrigued by comment above about M. Cherry; may have to consult Google on that one. Until further notice I would think the Globes audience pull excuses the low DH numbers. Like the new format on the Nielsens. Finally, winter of network discontent getting warmer. Since I was visiting, watched WKRP, Newhart in syndication, just for full disclosure.

Yes – I too saw the Mickey Rourke receiving award thing too … and bonus points to the MORON that gave the finger on a network awards show…I’m sure NBC loved that…and was it me or did even this award show cut back on the back drop and stage…movie ticket sales are up in this bad economy…Are they trying to make us think they are hurting too…? I guess its hollywoods way of trying to relate.

It’s still disappointing to see that CBS is most likely going to cancel The Unit, even though it has a larger total audience than Brothers and Sisters (ABC’s third most watched show). I’m hoping that CBS keeps it on the air because it’s pretty close to the magic 100 episode number.

24 posted real solid numbers with special competition and if it can even only hold those for a couple months on slower Mondays with a House lead in, it will still be FOXs second best scripted show. In its 7th season. After being off the air for almost 2 years. And even if it eventually falls to about 8-9 million viewers, looks like it should be able to retain demo numbers on the level of Heroes and well above Fringe.

When looking for their problem shows neither 24 nor House are where FOX will be looking.

I’d not draw any conclusions about 24′s future this season from Sunday night. The results tonight (Monday) are a bit of a different matter. While it’s not entirely a standard line up (it will be getting a lead in from House starting next week), it’s much more like the weekly competition that 24 will be seeing going forward. I’m sure fingers are crossed at Fox.

I have to think that 12 million viewers is not what Fox was hoping for with 24. This is a show that routinely sheds viewers as if they were so much dog hair during the course of a season. Given how silly/boring the first two hours were, that won’t change this season. In fact, given how different the television landscape is since 24 last aired, that viewer shedding will probably hit an all time high during this season.

My prediction: 8 million or less by season’s end. I wonder if that is enough for a renewal for a show with such a massive production budget?

My God, when Cherry Jones said, “I don’t have time to grieve,” all I could hear was Jesse Ventura saying, “I don’t have time to bleed,” in Predator.

Not sure that’s the image 24 producers wanted me flashing on while their Prez was going all emotional. Or maybe it was. Perhaps they are completely embracing the camp aspects of the show now. Wouldn’t be a bad idea. I just wish they had had Bauer’s dad give us one, “That’ll do, Jack. That’ll do,” before they blew him up last season.

Not that I was still watching by the time they blew him up. So maybe they did and I missed it.

By the way, TOURTURE HEARINGS????? 24 trying to inject realism????? REALISM????

Anyone notice that they told Jack that his questioning would resume in TWENTY-FOUR HOURS?

I will at least tune in to the season finale so I can see Jack show up back in the hearing room all beat up, bloody and half naked, just to hear him utter, “Next question, Senator,” before they fade to black for perhaps the final time ever.

By the way, I also noticed the bad Die Hard 2 and Die Hard 4 rip offs. If you are going to rip off Die Hard, Keifer, couldn’t you have at least ripped off one of the good Die Hards? I kept waiting for Senator Fred to show up and say, “Jack Bauer?? Someone get me John McClain!!”

Recorded “24″ so I will be recording tonight’s too. Wonder how many people are doing the same thing? With luck I’ll get to watch them both before next Monday since it is hard to find a two hour block right after work. That might be why the numbers are down and four hours in two days is a big commitment.
