William Petersen's farewell episode on CSI was the big draw on Thursday night, boosting CBS to nightly wins for viewership and adults 18-49, but even with all those viewers, it could only finish third for adults 18-34. ABC assisted by the duo of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice drew in the youth, winning the race for adults 18-34 for the night and finishing second for adults 18-49.

On a farewell Thursday (President Bush, William Petersen), CSI's 23.1 million viewers at 9pm towered over the competition. Grey's Anatomy and The Office were still reasonably close for adults 18-49, and both finished better for adults 18-34 with Grey's just edging out The Office for the win. At 9:30, 30 Rock recovered from its bruising last week vs. the BCS Championship, back to decent, if not Fey/Palin-esque demo numbers. And once again, Kitchen Nightmares demonstrated that it is no longer a show that should be on broadcast prime-time on Thursdays.

Eleventh Hour, like CSI, dominated the viewership race at 10pm as well as adults 18-49, but couldn't hold off the ABC competition, Private Practice, which won the adults 18-34 demo. ER's final season was recently extended a few more episodes, but it didn't turn any heads with its performance on Thursday.

Nothing much to say about the 8pm hour, both because it was mostly reruns and the Presidential Address scrambled these fast affiliate numbers to the extent that drawing any conclusions based on them is unwise.

Note that the Presidential address at 8pm Eastern will cause all these Fast Affiliate Ratings to be adjusted in the final numbers. See below for more information.

Edit from Seidman: we don't normally post final numbers, but since last night was such a mess due to the Bush address, I've added them below the overnight results -- courtesy of "Travis Yanan" (you haters of unnecessary quotes - it's not his real name, it's a pseudonym) on Marc Berman's forums.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

  1. Ladiesman217

Yes, Smallville beat Supernatural so easily in the ratings. Take that Supernatural, SMALLVILLE Rules.

  2. Fefu

Dude.. Grey’s Anatomy is sinking :O

  3. Ben

    Go Univision!
I expected much more from CSI ratings….

    xxx

  4. stacy

Umm… Smallville and Supernatural aren’t competing with each other.

  5. Somehow I knew deep in my heart that 30 Rock wouldn’t stay strong forever…but I still definitely see it getting another season. Why didn’t they air Kath and Kim last night? Or Ugly Betty? Oh well what do I know. ER is looking really bad compared to the first part of the season. Nothing was really outstanding besides CSI last night.

  6. Jackson

I was hoping for Smallville to get more viewers but I’m still happy. So far this season I think it’s hit at least 4 million viewers for every episode unless I’m wrong?

  7. johnthemon, NBC announced that 30 Rock has already been renewed, along with The Office.

Interesting that the Scrubs repeat isn’t that different than the original in the demo. And it even improved on the original in viewers! (Most of that 6.6 mil was probably for the presidential address, but even in the 8:30 half hour it did better than Tuesday.)

  8. johnthemon, many nets kept first run shows away from 8pm because of the Presidential Address. CW and NBC’s Earl were the only new shows.

  9. Julia, I wouldn’t read anything into those 8pm numbers. They’re a jumble because of the address.

  10. Woaaah! Grey’s took a hit. I didn’t know there were so many Merideth/Grissom fans…

Office and 30 Rock took less of a hit, though CSI did scuff them up. I can’t wait to see post superbowl numbers for those two…maybe add a million each. Heck I can’t wait to see post Amy Poehler show numbers for those two when it replaces K&K.

I’d have expected better from CSI. I was thinking no less than 25 million.

  11. Matt, it’s hard to say exactly how the final numbers will settle out. Figure 15 minutes of the 9pm hour (in the East) for CBS is the preceding repeat episode, so my guess is that the final CSI number at 9pm will be adjusted up somewhat. And likewise, the 10pm numbers above for Eleventh Hour contain about 15 minutes of Petersen farewell CSI, so they will likely be adjusted downwards.

  12. cool

I was expecting too better numbers for CSI.

  13. Jonathan B.

What was the half-hour breakdown for 10:00-11:00 on CBS?

  14. cool

And no way Eleventh Hour had a 4.2 in the demo, final numbers should be interesting.

  15. Here is the half hourly for CBS, note the big drop:

    10:00 18.507, 5.1/13, 3.2/9
    10:30 12.520, 3.3/9, 2.1/6

  16. JT

Grey’s Anatomy will have 4 to 5 million DVR viewers.

  17. Pokerface

Grey’s anatomy is still doing fine, 13 million viewers against the departure of Grissom in CSI is not bad. Granted, they are not the 20 million hit from 2005-2006. But they are still there, they just need to tweal a little.

I don’t think anyone even noticed that Ugly Betty was off schedule last night.

How did the Bush thingy did, ratings wise? LOL

  18. dave

I too would have expected more from CSI, although those are certainly meaty numbers. I wonder if the office will pick up viewers post super bowl, if it can it might be able to challenge Grey’s supremacy in the Demos. Also I wouldn’t be surprised if Office picks up about a million Hulu viewers every week with about 90 percent of them in the Demo. I’m one of them, and I’m not alone.

  19. DenverDean

GA had less than 14MM last week against BCS; CSI repeat drew 11MM. GA has aired 90 eps and CSI 190+. Which do you think will be around in five years?

  20. Bill, as long as you are giving breakdowns, what did the half hours on NBC at 10 look like? (Trying to figure out just how much 30 Rock is going to fall in the final numbers.)
