We got the Monsters vs. Aliens trailer, the SoBe lizards and the Chuck promo right after the first half and none of them held a candle on a 61" big screen in HD to the snake demo in full screen mode on a 24" monitor when it came to the 3D effects.
Please note, I'm only commenting on the 3D effects and not the commercials themselves. I thought the SoBe commercial was OK and it made me laugh (and there were some noticeable 3D effects, especially in terms of depth), Monsters vs. Aliens is one of a few movies I'll actually watch in the theater this year and as for Chuck, I might be a little too biased towards Yvonne Strahovski, but I thought that promo had the best effect in terms of stuff popping out of the screen.
None of it held a candle to Bruce Springsteen's halftime show, but the very brief earlier promo of the Chuck 3-D episode, featuring Chuck (and Sarah) in 1-D was cute.

I agree. I was not impressed with the effects, but I figured it was just my old tv.
I can’t say that I was very impressed either. I’m not really sure these promos will do much to increase Chuck’s viewers. For my part, I was so busy trying to catch the 3-D effects I’m not sure I could even tell you what the commercial was about. And the 1-D spots don’t tell viewers what the show is like. Oh well, I guess any promotion is better than none at all.
I agree. My guess is that the NBC clips had their 3D effect toned down to make them more watchable without the glasses. The downloadable clips could max out the effects.
I agree with Bill. The demos were really awful to watch without the glasses. If the show, or even the commercials, were like that, casual viewers would not bother to watch.
as a complete aside it’s shaping up to be a helluva game!
wow.
but they may have left Big Ben too much time…
The “Feeling All Right” promo of Chuck/Heroes/Medium was awesome.
Everybody was singing and dancing!
You’re right, Robert. Since I don’t have a dog in this fight, I was really hoping for an exciting game.
I think last year was more exciting. Though that might be because I was actually watching the end of last year, while this year I left the party after the 3D promos. (Though the hundred yard interception was very cool.)
Great 4th quarter. Shame on you Julia for leaving early.
The great ending will be very good for ratings. It’ll push the game over 90 million.
Hope the office does well after the game.
Didn’t catch the 3d effects, I didn’t have glasses. Might hunt some down for chuck tomorrow.
I think NBC didn’t do very good at all at promoting their lineup. CHUCK’s commercials were weak. HEROES looked bad. Making HEROES and CHUCK dance and sing just made me roll my eyes and I’m sure it didn’t impress their targeted demo.
As for the Chuck commercial, they were actually in 2D, not 1D. That bothered me.
The “feeling alright” commercial was by far the best commercial of the night in terms of NBC promos.
Robert and Bill:
How do you think NBC will do tomorrow night? The majority of the promos were for their Monday night shows. I’m a fan of all three shows (bigger fan of Chuck though =P). Will the promos help the ratings on all three shows?
why did NBC not propmote Friday Night Lights??? its the perfect demo
VYuci — we’ll know Tuesday morning. My guess is it will help some for Heroes and Chuck (Medium hasn’t been on since last Spring) but not a lot due to the promos. Heroes may get more bump from Heroes fans who checked out of the previous volume(s) wanting to see if this one is any better.
I think Heroes will hit a series low tomorrow and I will be not surprised if Medium gain viewers from Heroes, the ads were great.
I thought the Chuck/Heroes/Medium sing-a-long was quite funny. The Sobe commerical seemed to have a lot more 3D effects than the Monsters vs. Aliens trailer (all I noticed was the ball thing flying at me at the beginning).
I’m also quite surprised at the scarcity of commercials/trailers for summer blockbusters. I noticed Star Trek, Transformers, Angels & Demons, and Up, but where were X-Men, Terminator 4, Public Enemies, or Harry Potter?
If anyone (in the US) wants to see all the ads, Hulu has them all up here: http://www.hulu.com/superbowl
Wow. I know Ben Silverman is tied to THE OFFICE, but that episode was total crap. If anything it may scare people away from ever watching another episode. It was just awful.
