ABC Qualifies as the Highest-Rated Non-Sports Network on
“Super Bowl Sunday,” Beating Fox by 40% and CBS by 75%

ABC’s Results Opposite the “Super Bowl” Improve by
5% in Viewers and by 17% in Adults 18-49 Year to Year

Sunday Primetime (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
Opposite NBC’s “Super Bowl XLII” telecast, ABC (1.4/3) stood as Sunday’s No. 1 non-sports network during primetime in Adults 18-49, outpacing Fox by 40% (1.0/2) and CBS by 75% (0.8/2).

* Featuring a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” during the 7 o’clock hour, followed by special “Wipeout” programming (repeat/original) during the remainder of the night (including a special “Wipeout Bowl 1: Cheerleaders vs. Couch Potatoes” during the “Super Bowl Halftime” show), ABC’s numbers were up from “Super Bowl Sunday” last year (2/3/08) by 5% in Total  Viewers (4.1 million vs. 3.9 million) and by 17% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/3 vs. 1.2/2).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to more than 29% currently, from 22% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
