Okay, I'm completely making that up. But it's mostly out of wishful thinking more than pure fabrication (though it's still purely fabricated). I'd love it so freaking much if FOX would drag in the real-life human lie detectors using the science showcased on Lie To Me and make a two hour special breaking down all the times Alex Rodriguez lied to Peter Gammons on Sportscenter and Katie Couric (fourteen months ago A-Rod was interviewed by Couric on 60 Minutes where Alex Rodriguez lied to her point blank, and repeatedly about his steroids usage).

I say a two hour special because all the times they'd have to pause the tape and explain why he was lying probably couldn't be squeezed into a single hour. At least not with commercials.

It will never happen, for a variety of reasons, among them perhaps FOX's contract with the MLB. But I wish the media would be more honest and more thorough in its coverage of this stuff because so much just winds up getting glossed over. Like HGH (human growth hormone) which is a.) undetectable and b.) seems to have a very good track record of working.

See that part about undetectable? I'd like to see more exploration on the odds that most athletes in most major sports leagues don't use it. If they could test for HGH it wouldn't surprise me at all if any of our favorite superstars in any major sports league used it. It's not a steroid, but it reportedly helps greatly with recovery, which is a huge deal for high performance athletes in all sports, especially in sports where the seasons are long.

Undetectable! Chances A-Rod used HGH in the 2008 season? ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! You disagree? Well, that's why it would be really cool if they could actually get A-Rod and interview him on the Lie To Me style show. It never happens, but it's kind of fun to think about.

It's pretty clear that when the stakes are very high, people will cheat. And then quite often lie about their cheating. I have to give credit to A-Rod for at least being pretty smart and taking a page out of the Andy Petite (who fessed up, said he was sorry, moved on and was seemingly forgiven) book rather than the Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds (to name a couple) books.

But a Lie To Me handling of the A-Rod videos video would still be outstanding and I think it could probably pull 10 million viewers if promoted properly! We won't know how many people watched the 6pm interview with Peter Gammons for a day or eight, if ever. But I imagine it winds up being one of the higher rated Monday Sportscenter airings in awhile.

2/23  Update: Robert is proven to have a crystal ball!

Yes, that would be great. and as i read this, there is a guy on jeopardy who does what they do on lie to me, he even talked about the microexpressions and all.

  2. I do love posts that begin “Okay, I’m completely making that up.” ;)

One downside of the A-Rod interview. No extra PTI segment!

  3. cool

I thought it was true.. maybe a special edition of Moment of Truth :P

Robert, trust me you’ll see a still of him on LIE TO ME this season after the docs explain a common tell and show him lying. It’s a done deal. Heck, they got a picture of Michelle Obama from December on last week’s episode.

  5. clutz

    ROFL, best headline ever! :D

It would be fascinating to see a real-life “Lie to Me” featuring A-Rod. Maybe CBS could to their own special, with Katie Couric as host and student. The lie detector team could teach her how to spot lies, using her 60 Minutes interview. Perhaps that would garner some ratings for Ms. Couric.

  6. Clutz, best idea for Couric in prime time that I’ve seen yet! I think to ease legal concerns the nets would have to use the Couric interview anyway for such an event since he’s already admitted lying in that interview. I’m not sure any network would risk it with today’s Gammons interview, though fun to think about (and man, he touched his nose quite a bit). I’m sure Nick is right though and they’ll get a still of him on LTM before long.

  7. Nick, am I remembering wrong, or was it Michelle Obama from the inauguration? I’m sure it’s not hard to edit those sort of stills in.

  8. rob

    his new nickname is “A-Roid”.

  9. Gojou

I thought back in the summer Jose Canseco was set to appear in an episode of “Moment of Truth.” I don’t know if the episode ever got filmed or not, because wasn’t the series pulled from the lineup.

  10. cool

What happened to Moment of Truth? yes, it was trashy but ‘Hole in the Wall’ is getting worse numbers.

  11. Where’s madonna!

  12. Average Joe

They could call the episode A-ROID. LOL! No wonder Madonna isnt with him now. She probably found out and didnt wanted to be tainted by this doofus.

A-ROID is the Rod Blagojevich of baseball – he looks you right in the eye and lies to you. A real sociopath.

  13. AZTop

It hink Moment of Truth is a much better venue for A-ROD. You could have Couric and others sitting there as the questions get more outrageous. Much more in keeping with FOX style.

  14. Schmokey

Funny that you mention this, Robert, because I kept catching myself looking for the tells they have already discussed on the show. I kept thinking, “Was that a chin thrust? What’s he disgusted about from that question? Did his nose just twitch? Is he lying, or is he Samantha from Bewitched?”

Of course, I have a much different take on steroids. Namely that everyone (fans, media, owners) pretty much knew that this was going for over 20 years and no one cared. Now all of sudden that people care, everyone is looking to go back and burn guys at the stake for what they did back before anyone cared.

It’s such twisted logic that it’s distinctly American. It would not surprise me if 98% of guys in all sports have used this stuff, yet we expect people to come clean about it when they see the way those who have been outed are getting violated by the media? A media, by the way, that more than happy to make money of steroids by broadcasting these sports, and still does, I might add.

And while anyone caught using today is fair game, raking guys over the coals for stuff they did in the past is the worst type of hypocrisy.

Take Big Mac. Only an idiot would have thought he wasn’t on something for most of his career (I remember people talking about it going as far back as the early 90′s, but was always wink-wink talk, then they would go one to ooo-and-ahh over his latest 550 foot blast), yet no one cared a whit until 2006. Then when they tried to pin him down on something after the fact, people went ballistic when he understandably hemmed and hawed about it.

We enabled this. You, me, the media, the owners, the managers, everyone. So now we want to say that someone using should be flayed alive? Fine. You all go do tha, but don’t expect me to care about what people did back before this was considered verboten.

Personally, I wish no one had ever used. But wishes and hopes aren’t reality.

  15. Raphaela

    Can I ask Something?

After Fringe’s episode tomorrow when will it return? April?

  16. Vader

Raphaela, I don’t think FOX would put it on that long of a break, I’m thinking they’d bring it back in March for sweeps, but I don’t know what the American Idol schedule looks like then. We’ll find out for sure after tonight’s episode though.

  17. Raphaela, the Feb 10 episode is #14, after it there are 8 remaining in this season. I’m not entirely confident on the schedules I have been able to find for American Idol, but it seems like the AI Tuesday shows from Feb 17 – March 24 are 2 hours long, and the next one hour Tuesday Idol is March 31, so presumably Fringe returns that night. Update: Note below that commenter Alexis has Fringe returning a new episode on April 7.

Just as an FYI, this is the future American Idol schedule I am relying on:

Tuesday, Feb. 10th: Hollywood round, part 3
Wednesday, Feb. 11th: Hollywood round, part 4. 36 semifinalists announced (two hours)
Tuesday, Feb. 17th: First 12 semifinalists perform (two hours)
Wednesday, Feb. 18th: Live results show, three advance to finals
Tuesday, Feb. 24th: Second 12 semifinalists perform (two hours)
Wednesday, Feb. 25th: Live results show, three advance to finals
Tuesday, March 3rd: Third 12 semifinalists perform (two hours)
Wednesday, March 4th: Live results show, three advance to finals
Thursday, March 5th: Wild-card round, finalists announced
Tuesday, March 10th: 12 finalists perform (two hours)
Wednesday, March 11th: Top 12 results
Tuesday, March 17th: Top 11 perform (two hours)
Wednesday, March 18th: Top 11 results
Tuesday, March 24th: Top 10 perform (two hours)
Wednesday, March 25th: Top 10 results
Tuesday, March 31st: Top 9 perform (two hours?)
Wednesday, April 1st: Top 9 results

  18. Alexis

    Here is the schedule:

    Fringe #114 airs Feb 10, #115 on Apr 7.

Which means there will be another seven weeks of re-runs until #115 on Apr 7.

  19. Alexis, no reruns, just 2 hour episodes of American Idol.

  20. Oops…I meant another 7 weeks hiatus for Fringe and 2-hour telecast of American Idol.
