iTunes top TV Shows 10:15p PT, February 15, 2009

Update February 16, 2009, 5:30pm PT: now number one.

Ok, long-time readers know we don't put much (AKA any) stock in iTunes rankings, but it's a slow holiday weekend and Bill is on vacation and I can probably get away with chronicling this contest repeatedly without receiving a "please.make.it.stop" e-mail from him. Probably.

Only a few hours ago, when Dollhouse was # 5 on iTunes I wondered if Whedon fans wouldn't rest until Dollhouse was number one on iTunes. And either they won't or the promotion the show is getting on iTunes is working, or perhaps a bit of both.

Less than 24 hours ago, Battlestar Galactica was number one and Dollhouse was a distant nineteenth, now it trails only BSG.

Additionally, Friday's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has bumped up from 10th to 9th.

well this doesnt matter though does it? i dont understand why people would buy it when u can download it from a torrent site.

  2. Léo

Maybe because they have some respect for property rights and they want to support these shows by giving some money.
Or maybe they’re just morons, like you seem to think.

  3. Whedonites won’t rest!

  4. Average Joe

Thats just Whedonbots trying to keep the show alive. Sort of like Jericho fans on steroids. They also still think theres a chance Firefly could come back.

  5. Joss's Biggest Fan

I’ve already bought six! All of my friends and family are getting it as gifts. This is the best thing since the fall of the Soviet Union!

  6. Sam

Agree with you Leo. There is still some people with some respect for property. I’m one of them. I always buy my tv dvd’s. And god knows I’ve got a lot. I buy music on cd’s and movies on dvd’s.

  7. dave

I don’t get Itunes either. It’s also free on Hulu, (supported by ad revenue) If it’s image quality and no ads that you want, wait for the DVDs/Blu Rays or DVR it if you have one. Do that and you get extras as well. itunes is just not a good value.

  8. Leo, I don’t think people who actually buy content (as opposed to bit torrent) are morons at all. And I don’t think people wanting to support something are morons either. I just don’t think iTunes rankings mean anything as far as shows’ renewals are concerned.

  9. Dave, while I agree with you, and I stopped buying shows on iTunes since Hulu came along, iTunes does still serve a purpose. People who want to watch shows legally on their iPods need to buy them on iTunes. I’m not sure what shows are available in other countries, but I know that it is possible to buy shows while in other countries if you have an American iTunes account, even if they aren’t actually available there. (That might be borderline illegal, but at least you are still paying for it.)

  10. John

Why the heck are all these people paying to see the episode when you can see it for free (and legally) on hulu.com

  11. idizzle

TBH, this could be interesting if they’d give actual numbers and this meant millions of people were downloading these shows, but there are already appeals to buy and gift everyone you know with Dollhouse in order to help the show on various fanforums (not joking, Joss’s Biggest Fan), so for all we know that’s really only some hundred nutjobs as Average Joe suggests.

It would be interesting to know how a show like Pushing Daisies did on itunes though, because I know its fans tried the let’s all buy several copies on itunes thing too, for both episodes and the soundtrack.

  12. ANIL

This is super. The show can actually survive if it goes like this.
And don’t be calling anyone morons, you people have no right to say that. At least there are still people willing to pay money to give the show’s producers and cast what they deserve. And this is moronic? Yeah, I think you are. Sorry.

  13. carl

itunes sucks paying for episodes you don’t own, loaded with drm, no thanks, once itunes goes out of business the file won’t play, happened to msn music and many other services, drm free or nothing at all

  14. ANIL, interestingly, nobody has actually called anyone a moron, except you! :-)

Carl, when you buy content via iTunes you do own it outright. There are limitations to the number of computers you can store it on, but I’ve never run into any issues there and I own several computers.

  15. Steve

OMG how illegal to download or watch a show online. Jeez there are bigger crimes in the world than that lol

  16. R.G.

I guess Sci fi junkies – UNITE!

  17. R.G.

Does this help the networks financially to help kkep the shows running on air…?

  18. Holly

R.G., No, it doesn’t. If 3-4 million people bought off iTunes, maybe, but the numbers are a lot closer to 10-20 thousand people.

  19. Steve

well i download TSCC everyweek from a torrent site coz it dont air on tv i have. im from ireland and i dont care illegal or not. if i lived in the us id watch on tv.

  20. jesus_stick

    i think this is laughable. . .
