Ratings Highlights For Monday, Feb. 16, 2009 - Preliminary National Ratings
Monday, February 16, 2009:
Treating viewers to never-before-seen episodes of hit series "Wizards of Waverly Place" and "Hannah Montana," followed by the premiere of the Disney Channel Original Movie "Dadnapped," starring a bevy of its top series' stars, Disney Channel shined Monday night with its "Night of Stars" programming event, holding the definitive edge versus key competitors, most notably original programming on Nickelodeon/Nick-at-Nite. In fact head to head "Dadnapped" out-performed "Spectacular!" by impressive double-digit percent margins in Total Viewers and both key kid demos, with all three programs delivering all-time highs for the network in their respective time slots.
- At 7 o'clock an all-new "Wizards of Waverly Place" dominated an original "True Jackson, VP" on Nickelodeon, overshadowing delivery by 45% in Total Viewers (4.5 million vs. 3.1 million), by 82% in Kids 6-11 (2.0 million vs. 1.1 million) and by 75% in Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million vs. 972,000).
o "Wizards of Waverly Place" delivered Disney Channel's largest audience in the time period in the net's history in Total Viewers (4.5 million), Kids 6-11 (2.0 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million-tied 1/1/07).
- At 7:30 p.m., the all-new "Hannah Montana," guest starring Rob Reiner, surpassed its last original episode by 19% in Total Viewers (4.4 million vs. 3.7 million), by 27% in Kids 6-11 (1.9 million vs. 1.5 million) and by 21% in Tweens 9-14 (1.7 million vs. 1.4 million).
o With "Hannah Montana," Disney Channel registered the largest Total Viewer audience ever in the time period and recorded second-best levels in Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, behind only Monday, 10/9/06.
- In its debut, Disney Channel's 74th Disney Channel Original Movie, "Dadnapped" (8:00 - 9:40 p.m.), was particularly dominant against key time period competition, defeating the highly-publicized debut of original movie knock-off "Spectacular!" on Nickelodeon/Nick-at-Nite by a significant 39% in Total Viewers (4.6 million vs. 3.3 million), by 62% in Kids 6-11 (2.1 million vs. 1.3 million) and by 38% in Tweens 9-14 (1.8 million vs. 1.3 million).
The movie starred Disney Channel series stars Emily Osment, Jason Earles, Moises Arias (each of "Hannah Montana"), David Henrie ("Wizards of Waverly Place") and Phill Lewis ("The Suite Life on Deck").
o Boasting best-ever time period levels in both key kid demos in the net's history, impressively, "Dadnapped" also more than doubled year-ago time period levels, up by 119% in Total Viewers (4.6 million vs. 2.1 million), by 134% in Kids 6-11 (2.1 million vs. 896,000) and by 130% in Tweens 9-14 (1.8 million vs. 784,000).

I thought Spectacular was a much better movie! Dadnapped sucked and Disney can suck it!
I think it’s awesome that Disney Channel’s movie did better than Nickelodeon’s. That said, whether it was the competition or airing on a Monday night, that was the lowest rated Disney Channel original movie in who knows how long. (And this comes just over a week after Disney Channel crowed about the premiere of Sonny With a Chance, which, again, was the lowest rated Disney Channel series premiere in who knows how long.) And silence speaks volumes; I assume Nickelodeon’s iCarly beat Hannah Montana head to head.
Also cable networks comparing a show to year-ago-time-period levels always seems fishy; I suspect it’s another way to say, “New stuff this year beats reruns from last year,” though that doesn’t sound nearly as awesome.
What about iCarly, which had a new episode at 7:30 PM?
I was about to bring up the fact that “iCarly” failed to be mentioned in the Disney VS. Nick comparisons. Which is great news for me because I love “iCarly” & Miranda Cosgrove.
Unfortunately, for “True Jackson VP” fans, whe it doesn’t have “iCarly” as it’s lead-in, the show sinks to abysmal ratings. Wizards absolutely castrated Nick in that half hour.
I happened to like “Spectacular” & didn’t bother seeing “Dognapped,” so I’m a bit disappointed in the ratings difference. I happened to enjoy “Spectacular” much more than any of Disney’s musicals.
Spectacular was AMAZING!!!! everyone should see it!!! its WAY better the HSM! the songs are amazing!!!!
I love Nikko
From the L.A. Times
“a new 7:30 p.m. episode of “iCarly” won the night among kids, posting a strong 9.97 rating among viewers 6-11 and a 9.56 among tweens (ages 9 to 14). “iCarly” drew 5 million viewers overall.”
HSM is WAY BETTER than Spectactular. That Nickelodeon movie is a rip off on HSM!!!!!!
HSM sucks, and I am so glad that iCarly did better than Hannah Montana!
Those of us over 15 are hearing a busy signal right now.
iCARLY didn’t did better than Hannah Montana, are you kiddin? Hannah Montana is way better, and Disney always has a larger audience than Nickelodeon.
^ “iCarly” has dominated Hannah for quite some time now.
I love how Disney didn’t mention that the latest iCarly received 5.1 million viewers over HM’s 4.4 million. Oh, Disney.

I hate to break it to you, buddy, but I’m 20 years old and I happen to love iCarly and all things Nickelodeon. Disney is a close second. You’re never too old for good and wholesome TV programming, considering everything else on TV is pretty much about sex, drugs, or violence. I’ll choose Nick or Disney over anything – and I probably will in ten years.
That being said, Spectacular! was good, sort of cheesy, but good nonetheless. The songs were catchy, and it’s nice to see a bunch of new faces. I had no interest in watching Dadnapped, primarily because I cannot STAND Davie Henrie or Moises Arias. Just my opinion though.
Personally, I loved all these ratings. I wanted “Dadnapped” to beat the horrid-looking, absolutely terribly-named “Spectacular!”, I wanted ‘Wizards’ to kill True Jackson VP and I wanted iCarly to succeed because it is undoubtedly the funniest show on either network.
To Tina: I hear you. I have been blogging about how much TJVP crashes and burns without iCarly. I have never seen a show that depends so heavily on a lead-in. With iCarly – 3-4M, without iCarly, audience non-existent. It is quite amazing.
Both True Jackson VP and Spectacular are better than anything Disney has on now. Disney channel has been playing to the lowest common denominator in they’re shows and movies since Eisner left. Both TJVP and Spectacular did well in the ratings depsite the competition. TJVP is a bonafide hit and Nick needs to keep promoting it.
