I could've been at Wonder Con, and had I known that the cast of Chuck was going to be there, I'd probably have taken a "screw blogging!" day or even live blogged from the convention. But noooooo, I'm an idiot! Fortunately, Patrick Lee isn't, and he did a post on SciFi Wire that talks about something near and dear to our hearts. Chuck's prospects for renewal. Josh Schwartz seems as optimistic as our renew/cancel index (which doesn't include last Monday's performance, where it dipped among adults 18-49).
Schwartz maintains a positive attitude about a third-season pickup for the series, which has won critical praise but has seen lackluster ratings. "The network has been incredibly supportive of the show, and there's a lot of internal support for the show," Schwartz said. "Creatively, they're really happy with the show. They recognize the challenges of the time period we're in and all of the sort of hiatus impediments that have been thrown in our way. So I think, you know, on that level it's very positive. But, you know, we still have several more months to go, and ... it's very competitive, [up against ABC's] Dancing With the Stars this year. Will Jewel out-dance Denise Richards? I know that I can't wait. And Jewel's husband also, go with the soft shoe, he's in there. Yeah, yeah. So, um, so you know, I think we feel very, very optimistic, and we feel really, really good about the show creatively, and I think you know, everything that we can control, we feel very good about."
Is there a ratings number the show has to hit in the final episodes of the season? "If there is a threshold number, we have not heard it yet," Schwartz said, adding: "NBC's been very good about [renewing] the shows that they love based on creativity alone."
Apparently Mr. Schwartz isn't sold on our index!

I think Chuck has a fairly good chance at a 3rd season even with Leno taking 5 hrs of primetime. My main thought is this: with only 10 hours to schedule in the fall, nbc can actually approach friday with a plan, rather than running the leftovers and misfits on this night. If the worst comes, i think they could at least move chuck to fridays.
And if chuck can’t even make fridays, well… they will need midseason shows, too.
I hope CHUCK returns. It’s a show our entire family sits down together and watches. There aren’t too many shows like that around anymore. CHUCK appeals to my husband, myself and our two sons. Love the cast they are great together. The stories are fun and entertaining.
Chuck is a great show and our whole family loves watching it. If you’re not watching Chuck, check out the first season at your local video store and catch up! It’s funny, sexy (but clean), and charming.
Unfortunately he can’t use that optimism to make a good episode of the show.
Tonight’s episode (Chuck vs the Beefcake) was AWESOME! I am really excited for next week… I hope the ratings keep going up!
well we should know pretty soon if NBC is going to pick up CHUCK for season 3. Besides the ratings for tonight’s episode which was pretty good (side note: hope they bring back Bryce Larkin for the end of the season because that would be nice to see Bryce, Chuck the ex and Sarah together) but back to ratings related stuff besides seeing the ratings i read that besides the optimism Josh has for a season 3 they are also pitching the season 3 arc to NBC this week so some info should leak to sources at some point.
Whaat Robert? Summer Glau wasn’t enough to make you go to Wonder Con? :O
Well if this ABC, its cancelled like Life on Mars.
I watched the episode tonight, and it was awesome!! If Chuck is not renewed I will be devastated.
I laughed my ass off at “Come with me if you want to live”. This show so needs to get renewed.
Also a good Weird Science reference when Agent Cole says he’d like to butter Sarah’s muffin.
The ratings stabilized from last week, but given that 24 was two hours this week and you had the finale of the Bachelor, NBC can’t be overly disappointed.
Based on the ratings, Id say its toast. Plus when they come out say they are optimistic, it usually means they are just hopefull. Unless the show is cheaper to make than I think or the execs have a soft spot for it (like NBC and Friday Night Lights), I cant imagine ratings are good enough.
Chuck is awesome! NBC needs to keep this show.
Chuck is my favorite show on TV. Critics love it and it has a very loyal audience. NBC must renew this show!! Last night’s episode was great. Loved it!
Chuck is a great show but it’s in a horrible time slot. I think they could do a much better job of not throwing it against shows like ‘House’ and ’24′ on FOX, and the popular comedy block on CBS…
Agreements all around with the rest of you….CHUCK is the best thing on TV, and is one of only two shows watched regularly in my househole. C’mon NBC! Renew it for a 3rd season even if it has to be moved to another night so it won’t be up against the boring dancing stars and other “popular” Monday night shows. Oh yeah…season 2 is GREAT!!! {Thanks!!!}
