Do reruns of ‘The Simpsons’ not make Top 20?
Also, on a related note, I’ve always wondered, why does ‘The Simpsons’ not rerun on cable??
Don, the Simpsons was not in the top 25 Syndicated list this week (all we see). I did a search of all the weeks on our site (since August 2007) and the Simpsons has never been in the top 20.
Hmm, interesting. Why does no cable network have the rerun rights to it?
those reruns (and the dvd sales) are STILL making jerry seinfeld a very rich man. i think i heard that in 2007 he made $70 million dollars and was the second highest earning celeb (behind oprah, of course). i would love to see what he made last year. that show is so timeless…
5000+ episodes of Wheele and still going strong. It’s amazing they haven’t tried to at least do a prime time special of this show.
It is pretty cool to see Seinfeld still doing so good almost 11 years after the show ended. I wonder if Two and a Half Men will being doing that well 10 years after it’s off the air. But that probably won’t be for a long, long time.
i would have guessed the simpsons was a top 5 easy. everone my age 30-35 watches it, as do most people younger than me… males anyway.
most of us dvr it, too
Are you all talking about Syndicated reruns of the Simpsons or the Fox broadcast reruns?
Edit: I did find the list of stations showing the Simpsons in syndication. http://www.snpp.com/guides/stations.html
stacy, two and a half men has some funny moments, but that show has literally NO lasting appeal. Even Friends (which many, many people thought would live in reruns forever) has dropped below the top 20 mark only 5 years after it went off the air. Seinfeld is surely unique among television shows.
I have no idea why people watch 2.5 men… sheesh, it has as much innuendo as swingtown, and no real long-term plotlines.
@ 128 The show about nothing is in it’s own league; and you either like it or ya don’t.
i love seinfeld. i own all the dvds and watch them all the time. they just dont get old. i love friends too, but like most sitcoms, it ages some over time. i have probably seen less than 5 episodes of 2.5 men, but a few chuckles per episode hardly warrents my time.
we were talking about the syndication reruns.
is there something about the simpsons syndication deal that makes it non-syndication that would explain why the simpsons does not also rerun on cable?
don, nothing I know of but that isn’t surprising since my knowledge of syndication is very limited.
it’s a good question. I’ll see if I can find anything out. It’s possible that they were able to charge higher syndication fees to local stations who air the episodes by ensuring The Simpsons wouldn’t run on any cable superstations or networks.
Here in the SF bay area they run on the local CW affiliate (and were on the UPN — same station prior to) twice a day Mon-Fri at 6:30p and 11:30p. Seinfeld runs much more and has better time slots (7:30, 9p, and 11p excluding the 7p TBS airing). In my DVR program guide which goes out 12 days, there are 53 airings of Seinfeld (including TBS) and only 20 airings of The Simpsons (including two Sunday broadcasts on FOX).
in LA simps are on 3 times a day. my tivo shows seinfeld 40 simps 31… and that’s with no cable. i’m sure once fox decides they can make more by splitting simps with syndication and cable it will be on both and be even more saturated. it’s best if it isn’t IMO. can you imagine reruns on fx, tv land and comedy central all at once. plus syndication.
my guess is simps are on in more earlier time slots in many markets because of the kid appeal so the numbers would be lower. seinfeld i think is more in primetime. like in ny and LA
seinfeld is one of those shows that just doesn’t get old…
Wow, I had no idea Judge Judy was a more popular show than Oprah. Who would have ever thought?
Guys, the problem with friends that it got killed off very quickly, in the last couple of years it was so overhyped at the end, with the short gaps between dvd releases and almost every cable channel shows friends.
Seinfeld has genius marketers (kudos to Sony), Seinfeld’s DVDs didn’t get released until 2002-2005, which is very smart to keep the people interested.
Even mediocre shows like king of queens and George lopez get more viewership
yup I just checked it was #20 for the Week of January 26 – February 1, 2009
It’s weird though, it tops syndication prices and it’s not in the top 20..
Ehh well, good enough
