"Nightly" Beats "World News" by a Whopping 1.2 Million -- Its 21st
Consecutive Week
NEW YORK – March 10, 2009 – Last week marked another huge win for "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams." According to Nielsen Media Research data, " Nightly News" was the most-watched network evening newscast, winning the week of March 2-8, 2009. It was a strong week for the newscast as it averaged more than 9.3 million viewers, an impressive +1.257 million more viewers than ABC "World News'" 8.140 million, and +2.957 million more than CBS "Evening News'" 6.440 million. Season-to-date, "Nightly" leads "World News" by +778,000 viewers.
"Nightly" has won for 21 consecutive weeks in total viewers, and for fifteen straight weeks in A25-54. "Nightly" has delivered over nine million total viewers for each of the last eighteen weeks.
Among the key demographic adults 25-54, "Nightly News" posted a 2.4 rating, ahead of ABC's 2.0 rating and CBS' 1.5 rating -- its lowest A25-54 (000) delivery since the week of October 27, 2008. "Nightly" led "World News" by +470,000 A25-54 viewers for the week. Season-to-date, "Nightly" leads "World News" by +299,000 A25-54 viewers. Versus the same week last season, Nightly increased in rating M/A25-54 (+10%/+4%).
In homes, "Nightly News" increased the gap from the competition drawing over a 6.2 rating and a 12 share. In second place ABC drew a 5.5/11, and CBS posted a 4.4/9.
On its digital platforms, "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" continued its strong performance with more than 3.5 million online streams for the week ending March 7, 2009.






I’ve really become fond of this show.
Everyone likes to bash the network newscasts, but here’s an interesting fact: When Cronkite did the CBS Evening News their rating would be about two thirds the rating that CBS averaged in Prime. Williams now averages a higher rating than NBC Prime and does about 85% of CBS’s Primetime rating.
The Nightly News is holding up long-term better than Primetime. That may be faint praise but still….
