Updates on long-term renewals for Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory

We already knew the shows were longer-term renewals, but here are some updates from Broadcasting & Cable:

Per the new deal Men, currently in its sixth season, has been renewed through the 2011-2012 season, the show’s ninth. Big Bang, currently in its second season, has been renewed through the 2010-2011 season, the show’s fourth.

So Men gets a 3 year renewal and Big Bang gets two more years in this deal.

At the same time, the companies have settled their differences over money that Warner Bros. said CBS owed it for production costs on Two and a Half Men. Warner Bros. sued CBS in December for more than $49 million, claiming that if the show got picked up for a fifth and sixth season and met certain ratings targets, CBS agreed in 2003 to pay the studio a portion of deficits incurred over the first four years, as well as premiums on the license fees for years five and six.

A CBS spokesman confirmed the litigation was resolved, but would not comment on whether the deals to renew the comedies and to settle the lawsuit were made together.

  1. I wonder why they didn’t give TBBT a deal through the 5th season, when it will hit 100 episodes.

  2. It could be they just couldn’t come to terms on a 3 year deal for the show. I think CBS might like the perceived negotiating leverage. If ratings are down in a couple of year but the show only needs one more year for syndication, CBS might be able to get it cheaper than they would by paying now. Given the historical ratings trends, I wouldn’t fault CBS if that’s the case.

I don’t blame cbs for using caution, either. But I’m fairly sure bbt will live until, and most likely past, a 5th season.

  4. CrashMacKenzie

Alright, cool. Big Bang is set for a while. Now I can focus all of my willpower on getting Chuck renewed.

  5. I just wonder what sort of position CBS was in to keep a fifth season out of the deal, considering the other lawsuit.

  6. Jack

I have been slowly getting into BBT. I have never understood the love for THM.

  7. Jesse

It’s nice that CBS is so committed to comedies that aren’t funny. Most networks aren’t that committed to shows as unfunny as these two.

@ jesse.. that seems like a strange comment.

2.5 men will go on for 20 seasons, and it will end with jake’s son moving back in with Charlie XD
so then you get 3.5 men… the new series that continues on into oblivion…….

    jesse,

I hope you trying at sarcasm, because those are two of the funniest shows on tv if not the funniest. Both are very well written and acting is good as well.

  10. Jesse

I”m really really not trying to be sarcastic. I’ve tried to like both shows. I watch them and I don’t laugh. Not once. Am I supposed to laugh because the tall skinny guy just used a bunch of big words and said them really fast? Am I supposed to laugh because Charlie Sheen left a girl passed out on his bed? Because I don’t laugh. I find both shows insufferable. I find both shows boring. I find both shows generic.

You want funny? Watch 30 Rock. Consistently the funniest show on TV every week.

  11. daniel

what about How I met your mother
and remember that show “the class” i still can’t believe they canceled that

  12. daniel

i like both these shows but i don’t think THM has to go on for that long

  13. KG

30 Rock is funny? Ahahaha, now THAT comment is funny. And hopefully sarcasm.

TBBT is one of the best comedies out there, that not a lot of people know about, even given their ratings. I’m very happy they got picked up for two more seasons, and hopefully more in the future. It’s a great cast.

  14. Madness

big bang theory is too dull to be true . two and a half men is good but getting less and less funny each season

  15. dug

I agree two and a half men is good but getting less and less funny each season. As Jake gets older too he is less and less funny and I almost he would just go away.

  16. Daniel

This is the silliest argument. One person thinks THM and BBT is funny and another person thinks it isn’t. Guess what, you are both right. What is funny to one person isn’t necessarily funny to another. Great, you don’t like it, good for you so don’t watch it. Nobody is forcing you to watch it but at the same time telling another person who loves the show that its bad is insulting. Although my favorite show is HIMYM, the other two shows make me laugh the most. Is it the smartest humor on TV, of course not, but I like to laugh and that’s what I ask in a comedy. I llke 30 Rock and it is clever, I usually Tivo it but dont make an effort to watch it while its on TV. Never quite understood why I dont make an effort for the show, maybe I cant connect with the characters.

  17. The ratings for 2.5 Men show that is doing better than ever. Big Bang Theory is growing.

Its a great time to be Chuck Lorrie. Keep the vanity production cards coming.
