Lifted by a 17 minute overrun of the NCAA Tournament, CBS carried the night in the adults 18-49 demo with an average 3.1 rating. With most of its animation line up intact, Fox was able to win the adults 18-34 demo with a 3.0 rating.

Two bits of good news for CBS from the NCAA Tournament yesterday. First it ran about 17 minutes into primetime, giving the network enough of a boost to top the 18-49 demo. Second, Michigan State won to prevent a 75% Big East Final Four and keep a "hometown favorite" in the Final Four. CBS didn't do quite as well as last Sunday, when NCAA Basketball ran even longer and Obama was on 60 Minutes, but much better than two Sundays ago.

ABC's early line up performed well, but with a Desperate Housewives repeat at 10pm, it was prone to slip below its average for the night. Without the late competition from ABC, NBC's Celebrity Apprentice was up sharply in its last hour, and helped boost the network overall from last week. Fox, perhaps boosted by the non-standard ABC schedule as well, was up several demo ticks in both adult demos from last week as Family Guy's Star Trek:TNG themed episode ruled the demos at 9pm.

Update: Another of our data providers had the PGA: Armold Palmer Invitational listed as the NBC show from 7-8, but the same numbers. Likely that aired in the East and Dateline aired elsewhere. I have changed the table to include the PGA event, but it was possibly different in other time zones.

Note that because the live NCAA Tournament ran over into prime-time by a reported 17 minutes in the Eastern time zone, these CBS fast affiliate numbers are prone to adjustment, for more information see below. Also, the shows indicated for different time periods in the table below are likely what was seen in the Eastern Time zone only.

You can see overnight reports for past Sundays here to compare.

Shows are sorted by demo adults 18-49 in each time slot. Trying a little experiment here on reorienting the tables to emphasize the adults 18-49 demo, while still presenting all the high level data we get.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs which are currently in approximately 24.4% of all U.S. TV households. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

ABC needs to quit having all these breaks in between shows! if the think that the reaks will keep viewers coming back, then they a sorely mistaken!!! most people forget instead of tune in! lets hope next season DH Grey’s and all of ABC’s shows go on shorter hiatus!

  2. I thought NBC had golf?

  3. SoCal

i really hope the Unit gets renewed…it keeps getting better this season!

Nice to see Family Guy rule the demos as well…2 good eps in a row for them

  4. Michael

OK, Obama wasn’t on and Kings still did horribly, even getting beaten by Univision in the demo. Now does everyone agree that Kings is doomed?

  5. Wow, a rerun of The Simpsons clearly beats new episodes of King of the Hill, I’m starting to understand those Fox programmers.

  6. Julia, they very well may have, although our data says Dateline early. I will amend the post.

  7. SoCal

O, and Kings is an embarassment…nice job Silverman

  8. Futon Critic agrees with your data, but here’s what Berman had to say: Although NBC plenty of mileage in the 7 p.m. hour care of the Bayhill Golf Tournament at a second-place 7.5/13 in the overnights, week three of lead-out Kings did not benefit with a series-low (and fourth-place) 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m.

  9. DaisiesDeathKnell

Dennis, it’s actually been happening for about a decade where the rerun of The Simpsons at 8:30 nearly beats (or often tops) the brand new episode. The show has the sort of young male “tune in, tune out” audience that arrives late to the game at 8:30 and sees an episode they haven’t watched before. The show certainly repeats well.

  10. Chief

FIRE BEN SILVERMAN! FIRE BEN SILVERMAN! FIRE BEN SILVERMAN!

He makes Dawn Ostroff look like the most knowledgeable and competent executive in the world by comparison.

  11. Michael, you’re crazy. Kings is clearly growing. People just are still learning about it. Just wait. Any day now.

  12. a

Many people are saying that The Unit’s series finale will air the last in April 2009 – they got this “info” from CBS/Unit insiders who’ve “confirmed” that CBS has already cancelled The Unit and that the sets are being torn down. Is this true (series finale in April)?

  13. Hot Pocket

Its really just time for NBC to clean house and move USA Network’s Bonnie Hammer up to run the network next season. They really don’t have a clue over there.

  14. the128boy

it’s amazing that after being brought back from apparent cancellation a couple of years ago, The Apprentice is still this potent. those numbers are good in general, not just for NBC. i wonder what kind of numbers it could pull if it had a halfway decent lead-in. The amazing Race had a strangely good night… i wonder where that bump came from.

  15. a, we have no “inside” information about any announcements or set destruction. Based on its ratings, I have been predicting The Unit’s cancelation since last fall though, so none of that would surprise me.

  16. earl

star trek: the next gen voices on the episode helped family guy.

  17. Kings Forever

I love Kings. Can’t wait for season two! When will that air?

  18. Celo

Bill, why no mention of the Amazing Race basically winning the entire night (granted with the aid of 60 Minutes’ overrun)? 14 million viewers kills the competition, and their numbers rise each week. Do I detect a bias against reality?

  19. Jon

I agree with Hot Pocket that NBC should clean house and get rid of Silverman and Zucker, it’s a surprise that he lasted so long at NBC and I also agree that Bonnie Hammer should take over either of their jobs.

As for The Unit, I think it’s a victim of CBS doing so well this season. Had it been drawing the ratings on say FOX or NBC, it would have been renewed.

  20. Tyler

Bill, do you know if ABC has any new dramas next season? If so, what are they’re names, and when does Harper’s Island prmiere?
