All of this is correct, except for the “It’s a great show” part. “Kings” can’t make up its mind if it wants to be a primetime soap or art-house. So it tries to be both and succeeds at neither. The patriarch has an affair and a bastard child the wife doesn’t know about, the jealous son is gay, the daughter has a boyfriend daddy doesn’t approve of, everybody jockeys for power… blah blah blah… It’s “Dynasty” with pretensions of Criterion Collection. Does it have nice production values? Well, yeah, for 4 million bucks an episode, it better. The dialogue in the pilot was all stilted, overwritten nonsense, the cast don’t gel, and it’s not hard to see why it’s a Nielsen disaster. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been made in the first place.

When DH comes back it will get 13 million viewers and in 2 weeks it back on 15 million viewers and repeats again! Its killing the ratings!

Good thing when DH/BS/GA/PP/UB comes back with new episodes there will be no repeats up to the season finale!

Kath & Kim could easily attract 2 million more viewers on average (TV: NBC/USA/CNBC/Bravo, DVR, Internet (YouTube/social networking sites/Hulu), DVD). The same goes for The Unit.

Speaking of The Unit, someone at E! (around 6:30pm ET – 3/30/09) is reporting that:
1. The show’s Executive Producers (Ryan, Vahan Moosekian (I luv that name! LOL), Mamet, just to name a few) were informed of its cancellation around March 15
2. The series finale will air on the last Sunday in April 2009 (lots of cliffhangers)
3. The sets began to be torn down last week
4. According to an inside source, Moonves dislikes the show

Anyway, the ratings seem lower then Man Men’s average, but then again MM had WAY more publicity. And really there only needs to be at most one more season of the show anyway, with the main character dying and getting closer & closer to being caught, this is not a show that should go on forever.

Then I read that Life on Mars fans are campaigning to save a show that actually has been officially canceled, and understand that I might be hopping to high.

Tom, Rat Finke has her agenda, and I have mine. Critical regard schmitical regard. If I were going to put my neck on the line to save something from NBC’s landmark 2008-2009 freshman class, it wouldn’t be “Kings,” that’s for sure. It’d be the critically-reviled “Kath & Kim.” That show has cast chemistry and the potential to appeal to a wide audience. “Kings” has neither of these things.

My suggestion wold be to have the NCIS spin-off on Wednesday and move the comedies to Sunday and have The Amazing Race in between runs of Survivor.

CBS will be okay b/c procedurals rate better than what NBC tried to do. NBC missed completely off the mark with too many serialized shows and abandoning their old comedy viewers.

I blame trying to write two papers and do all my reading for the week at the same time as trying NOT to do any of that.

Personally I think CBS is set up for a potentially bigger fall than even NBC has had and is on because their line-up of shows are so similar you have to imagine that if the bubble bursts on one of them then all of them will follow. Its hard, for example, to imagine a situation where CSI dies but CSI: NY and CSI: Miami don’t follow it.

It kinda didn’t had a chance. NBC is having such bad ratings and Kings is an heavily serialized drama on Sunday.

That show would be awesome if it aired on a cable network, but it’s budget is definitely not that low…

As for CBS, I think that they’ll be okay but they need to find replacements for aging shows like Cold Case, Without a Trace and even the CSI Franchise. Some of the pilots for this season for CBS sound very good and it will be interesting what they pick up.

And I LOVE the new numerical layout, with the total viewership de-emphasized by shunting it over to the right.

I’m another Breaking Bad fan, but last night’s ep. was excruciating. But then, it was meant to be. Still, emotionally, that was really really hard to watch, even more than when they liquified a corpse and then it leaked through a floor last season.

Yikes, those are horrible numbers for Kings. Too bad. It got pretty good after the first hour of the pilot, but if NBC had cared at all, they would’ve at least slotted it at 10 behind Apprentice as a lead-in.

The serial dramas don’t have a lot of life in them in general and its hard to keep them on air for at least 5 years without them being a hit or at least a solid ratings player.

I fear ABC is closing in on where NBC was two years ago. A lot of it’s more successful older shows are starting to catch up to them ratings wise (Lost , Desp Housewives) and so far it has not provided a big scripted hit to go along with these shows and or replace them when the time is right. ABC has to be a little concerned about this as you can only ride Dancin’ so far. The fact that it’s on twice a year already has me concerned of it’s eventual over exposure.

Instead, she reported the truth: out of NBC’s 08/09 lineup, Kings was the only show that had any sort of critical regard. That no one is watching the show has little relationship to that statement, however.

Bill may hope that such an order will stave off people saying things like, “but XYZ had 7 million viewers!” and instead, focus on the demos that are more important. I don’t have any hopes of that actually happening, but I don’t see any downside to the current ordering either.

On a related note you do have to wonder how hard the folks at NBC are kicking themselves for passing on House now…

For the Breaking Bad fans, the top rated episode from the most recent week I have is: 3/22 10pm, 1.129 million viewers. Since we don’t track cable shows as closely (too many of them!) I don’t know how that compares to previous shows/seasons.

Undoubtedly NBC made the situation worse for themselves with some of the decisions they made but right now I think they’re doing the only thing they can, green light new shows and hope something hits. If you look at the variety of shows that NBC has debuted over the past two-years there’s a lot going on and they’re just throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks and right now that’s really all they can do. Until they find a show that hits there’s not much else they can do besides build up a slate of good programming so that when you find a hit there’s good shows across the rest of the week – although that’s where they’re failing right now.
