"It’s amusing how many people are slagging Kings.. but have any of these people actually seen it? It’s a great show."

All of this is correct, except for the "It's a great show" part. "Kings" can't make up its mind if it wants to be a primetime soap or art-house. So it tries to be both and succeeds at neither. The patriarch has an affair and a bastard child the wife doesn't know about, the jealous son is gay, the daughter has a boyfriend daddy doesn't approve of, everybody jockeys for power... blah blah blah... It's "Dynasty" with pretensions of Criterion Collection. Does it have nice production values? Well, yeah, for 4 million bucks an episode, it better. The dialogue in the pilot was all stilted, overwritten nonsense, the cast don't gel, and it's not hard to see why it's a Nielsen disaster. Perhaps it shouldn't have been made in the first place.

It's amusing how many people are slagging Kings.. but have any of these people actually seen it? It's a great show. It's only 13 episodes. Considering it's Ian McShane, what's the point in cancelling it now. But perhaps it should have been on HBO instead of NBC.

I hate when ABC do this repeats and haitus!

When DH comes back it will get 13 million viewers and in 2 weeks it back on 15 million viewers and repeats again! Its killing the ratings!

Good thing when DH/BS/GA/PP/UB comes back with new episodes there will be no repeats up to the season finale!

I think Kath and Kim has proven that it's not only a terrible show, quality-wise, but a terrible show ratings-wise. We need not discuss it, it's as good as gone. Especially with Parks and Recreation coming soon to trounce it in the ratings. Those Office viewers are awfully loyal to anyone involved with their show.

a,how do you measure potential? Kath & Kim premiered with 7.52 million viewers and a 3.2 in the demo and ended with 3.89 million viewers and a 1.7 in the demo. That's a show that lost almost half its viewers, not a show with a lot of potential.

Are the ratings always going to be sorted like this? would rather see the shows with the most viewers listed first, not who won the demos.

Riff Rafferty, Kath & Kim deserves to be renewed b/c it's brimming with potential. Potential should ALWAYS be taken into consideration when debating ANY series shelf life. Although not the most important factor, but a crucial one. Would YOU (my fellow TVByTheNumbers participants) renew or greenlit any TV series if YOU thought it had low potential, quality wise?

Kath & Kim could easily attract 2 million more viewers on average (TV: NBC/USA/CNBC/Bravo, DVR, Internet (YouTube/social networking sites/Hulu), DVD). The same goes for The Unit.

Speaking of The Unit, someone at E! (around 6:30pm ET - 3/30/09) is reporting that:
1. The show's Executive Producers (Ryan, Vahan Moosekian (I luv that name! LOL), Mamet, just to name a few) were informed of its cancellation around March 15
2. The series finale will air on the last Sunday in April 2009 (lots of cliffhangers)
3. The sets began to be torn down last week
4. According to an inside source, Moonves dislikes the show

Question: How credible is E! News?

A couple of maybe interesting trivia: DH reruns far better with the 18-49 than with overall viewers, yet (2) DH's second half-hour lost something like 12% of the demo while Celebrity Apprentice gained in the demo overall from 2.3 to 3.9 or a whopping 75% over its two hour run. Also, kudos obviously to Family Guy.

Ike, I felt the same way about last night’s episode of Breaking Bad. It's been a while since I've seen a television show that made me feel so depressed, which I guess means the shows doing something right.

Anyway, the ratings seem lower then Man Men’s average, but then again MM had WAY more publicity. And really there only needs to be at most one more season of the show anyway, with the main character dying and getting closer & closer to being caught, this is not a show that should go on forever.

I wonder if with the new layout people will finally get that the numbers that matter are the A18-49 demo. Love it, btw.

Then I read that Life on Mars fans are campaigning to save a show that actually has been officially canceled, and understand that I might be hopping to high.

Alex, it's not hard to imagine at all, since it already happened to CBS once. In the early to mid '80s, 3/4ths of their dramas were private detective shows. That was all well and good for a while; CBS was #1 and most of them were hits. Then all of a sudden, most of them weren't (and the one that still was -- "Murder She Wrote" -- wasn't a hit with anybody who mattered), and when CBS fell in 1987, they fell HARD.

Tom, Rat Finke has her agenda, and I have mine. Critical regard schmitical regard. If I were going to put my neck on the line to save something from NBC's landmark 2008-2009 freshman class, it wouldn't be "Kings," that's for sure. It'd be the critically-reviled "Kath & Kim." That show has cast chemistry and the potential to appeal to a wide audience. "Kings" has neither of these things.

Then all of a sudden, most of them weren’t (and the one that still was — “Murder She Wrote” — wasn’t a hit with anybody who mattered), and when CBS fell in 1987, they fell HARD.

Tom, Rat Finke has her agenda, and I have mine. Critical regard schmitical regard. If I were going to put my neck on the line to save something from NBC’s landmark 2008-2009 freshman class, it wouldn’t be “Kings,” that’s for sure. It’d be the critically-reviled “Kath & Kim.” That show has cast chemistry and the potential to appeal to a wide audience. “Kings” has neither of these things.

Shem: Wednesday or Tuesday...both are bad TV nights for me. Not into the "reality" shows.
Universal should run "Kings" so that we DVR-less watchers could catch up. I know it's on NBC.com, but I just can't bring myself to watch TV shows on my PC.

True about CBS, but they still have a few holes in their schedules. The Sunday schedule does need a revamp and is it's third when NBC have NFL and ABC have Desperate Housewives and B&S and the Wednesday 8pm comedies are dragging down Criminal Minds and CSI:NY.

My suggestion wold be to have the NCIS spin-off on Wednesday and move the comedies to Sunday and have The Amazing Race in between runs of Survivor.

Jon, I agree with that statement too b/c Bonnie has done all she could over the years to get USA and Sci-Fi as commercialized as possible. Sci-Fi Channel was never meant to be a long-term solution for NBC Universal that's why its turning into SyFy to be like USA.

CBS will be okay b/c procedurals rate better than what NBC tried to do. NBC missed completely off the mark with too many serialized shows and abandoning their old comedy viewers.

I'm also a fan of the new table. It makes much more sense to have the 18-49 demo numbers as the first column and to have the shows ranked from highest to lowest according to that data.

I blame trying to write two papers and do all my reading for the week at the same time as trying NOT to do any of that.

Jon (and others) its worth remembering that not that long ago everyone was saying similar things about NBC - they'll be fine as long as they find replacements for Friends etc. only the replacements didn't work out so well.

Personally I think CBS is set up for a potentially bigger fall than even NBC has had and is on because their line-up of shows are so similar you have to imagine that if the bubble bursts on one of them then all of them will follow. Its hard, for example, to imagine a situation where CSI dies but CSI: NY and CSI: Miami don't follow it.

Kings is an awesome show. I love it. It's a pity it is already dead...

It kinda didn't had a chance. NBC is having such bad ratings and Kings is an heavily serialized drama on Sunday.

That show would be awesome if it aired on a cable network, but it's budget is definitely not that low...

PS: You could put the blue colors on the table. It's more eye friendly.

i absolutely love the demo order rather than viewer order. it's just easier to quickly see who REALLY won the night, rather than who will have a meaningless press release about winning the night.

Elliot Fox could buy House off of NBCU outright but I doubt NBCU would ever be willing to sell it. I could be wrong (and I’m sure someone will correct me if I am) but I can’t remember an instance when a production company has sold the rights to a hit show to a rival company. What’s interesting is that nobody has suggested that NBC should try and steal House…

Hot Pocket, I agree about Bonnie Hammer. While she's not perfect and isn't exactly well liked by Sci-Fi fans, I think she has done a great job at USA and to a lesser extent Sci-Fi. The whole 'Character Welcome' thing has worked well with the originals, WWE Raw and off-net shows like House and NCIS.

As for CBS, I think that they'll be okay but they need to find replacements for aging shows like Cold Case, Without a Trace and even the CSI Franchise. Some of the pilots for this season for CBS sound very good and it will be interesting what they pick up.

Bill, I hope you won't mind if I point out that you misspelled "Sundays" at the end of the second paragraph where you said "much better than two Sunday’s ago." I can't help it; I always notice apostrophe abuse.

And I LOVE the new numerical layout, with the total viewership de-emphasized by shunting it over to the right.

I'm another Breaking Bad fan, but last night's ep. was excruciating. But then, it was meant to be. Still, emotionally, that was really really hard to watch, even more than when they liquified a corpse and then it leaked through a floor last season.

Yikes, those are horrible numbers for Kings. Too bad. It got pretty good after the first hour of the pilot, but if NBC had cared at all, they would've at least slotted it at 10 behind Apprentice as a lead-in.

elliott, I think The Unit is a 20th Century Fox produced show. If CBS doesn't want to pick renew it, another network could pick it up, but it's unusual where one network picks up another castoff. While it happens sometimes, in recent history it only seems to happen with 30 minute sitcoms (Scrubs from NBC to ABC, for example). It could happen, but if The Unit is canceled by CBS I wouldn't get your hopes up.

n if the unit goes to fox do they have to pay CBS for airing it or does it not matter if it's cancelled

I don't think CBS will be in trouble as long as they continue to recycle their procedurals every year into new ones. Maybe in other areas but not their procedurals.

The serial dramas don't have a lot of life in them in general and its hard to keep them on air for at least 5 years without them being a hit or at least a solid ratings player.

I like the new order, even though I doubt it will actually get the point across to a lot of people.

I agree Alex. NBC has to take some risks and some shots and hope they get "the next big show" to hit the airwaves. It may take a lot of trial and error but it has to be done. The question is how much do they dump and how much do they throw up against the wall? We will find out more in a few weeks but my guess is they will be more conservative then aggressive. That may not be the way to go though.

I fear ABC is closing in on where NBC was two years ago. A lot of it's more successful older shows are starting to catch up to them ratings wise (Lost , Desp Housewives) and so far it has not provided a big scripted hit to go along with these shows and or replace them when the time is right. ABC has to be a little concerned about this as you can only ride Dancin' so far. The fact that it's on twice a year already has me concerned of it's eventual over exposure.

Why ABC keeps the DH repeats at 10pm? IMO, they should put Castle that has potential and it's the only procedural in that hour.

So Kings is serialized? It's on my radar then even though it's numbers cry cancellation. I'll take serialized shows any day then those reset shows or reality crap.

Riff: This is Finke we're dealing with here: if she had an opportunity to trash Silverman/Zucker over Kings, she's certainly take it.

Instead, she reported the truth: out of NBC's 08/09 lineup, Kings was the only show that had any sort of critical regard. That no one is watching the show has little relationship to that statement, however.

Ruudisss, Bill cares about minutiae like the order of the data so that what's more important (18-49 and 18-34 demos) can be stressed. For 98.3% of the people reading these, it probably doesn't matter. The average viewer numbers are still there, and I'd argue they're even easier to find than they were before (just look all the way to the right).

Bill may hope that such an order will stave off people saying things like, "but XYZ had 7 million viewers!" and instead, focus on the demos that are more important. I don't have any hopes of that actually happening, but I don't see any downside to the current ordering either.

Elliott NBCU (NBC's parent company) makes money from House.

On a related note you do have to wonder how hard the folks at NBC are kicking themselves for passing on House now...

elliott, NBC Universal makes money selling House to Fox, and they make money selling House in syndication, and they make money from selling DVDs. It's making them lots of money.

ruudisss, the longevity of this layout is up for discussion, but all the old numbers are still there, nothing has been removed.

For the Breaking Bad fans, the top rated episode from the most recent week I have is: 3/22 10pm, 1.129 million viewers. Since we don't track cable shows as closely (too many of them!) I don't know how that compares to previous shows/seasons.

Not to sound like I’m defending the NBC executives but I’m not sure I’ll ever understand some of the criticism levelled at them. Its true that aspects of the network have been horribly run in recent times but at the same time there’s an inevitability to some of what’s happened to them - the television industry is cyclical and even money says that in a couple of years CBS is going to be sinking when they’re big hits start to dry up. The same thing is slowly starting to happen to ABC now, the big scripted hits aren’t as big as they once where and they can’t find a new hit to save their lives at the moment. Its what happens in television.

Undoubtedly NBC made the situation worse for themselves with some of the decisions they made but right now I think they’re doing the only thing they can, green light new shows and hope something hits. If you look at the variety of shows that NBC has debuted over the past two-years there’s a lot going on and they’re just throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks and right now that’s really all they can do. Until they find a show that hits there’s not much else they can do besides build up a slate of good programming so that when you find a hit there’s good shows across the rest of the week - although that’s where they’re failing right now.

Hey, will this rating order stay forever? I know that overall viewers mean nothing to TV executives, but I always cared only about overall numbers and this order is really complicated for a short-minded boy like me! Oldies and children are TV viewers too!
