My Wednesday viewing dwindles with finales of Life on Mars, Damages and Life

ABC's 'Life on Mars'

I wound up watching a disproportionate amount of television on Wednesday nights between Life, Lost, Life on Mars and Damages.

Life on Mars has its series finale tonight, and Damages has its season finale tonight.  While I am a fan of both shows I think it's OK for Life on Mars to end and I am glad the producers were given a heads-up so they could write a series finale.

I like Damages and definitely think it's above average.  I am not among the screeching fanboys who think it's the best show on television nor am I elitist and think, as many of our commenters, that Damages requires a lot of thought and a high IQ.  Sure, there are some complexities to the plot and with all the back and forth between the present and the future it can get confusing if you look away, but it's not all that complicated.  I think it's a good show,  not a great show, but I'm impressed they were able to make a second season of it as interesting as it has been.

While Damages has already been renewed for a third season, its ratings have been so pitiful in the second season I am wondering if FX can and will extract themselves from that deal or whether they will plow forward with another season.   Mad Men had much better numbers than Damages, and I think the expectations for a series on FX are higher than for a series on AMC.  Nonetheless, last Sunday  Breaking Bad on AMC had 1.294 million viewers while last Wednesday Damages had only 890,000.

NBC's Life has its season (and no doubt, series, though that hasn't been announced yet) finale next Wednesday and I will be down to only watching Lost on Wednesdays unless I wind up watching The Unusuals on ABC.

In actuality,  despite my DVR existence, I have watched every episode of Lost this season the same night it aired, and usually watch Life on Wednesday nights as well.  Life on Mars and Damages I watched at my leisure, typically on the weekends.

People think that Damages requires a high IQ? LOL. Don’t get me wrong, I love the show, but I never felt smart for being able to follow it.

As for my Wednesdays, I’m enjoying Scrubs/Better Off Ted while it lasts.

If your looking for a good series to watch, check out “United States of Tara” on Showtime and “Party Down” on Starz.

  4. I’ve already seen the season finale for Tara, and that airs Sunday (but a week earlier on on-demand!).

I’m not a Veronica Mars fanboy and that seems like at least 50% of the reason to watch Party Down!

  5. Nah, Party Down is pretty good regardless, at least the second episode is. First one is on the weak side.

Party Down looks like it has the potential to become very good. I enjoyed the first two episodes quite a lot.

On a Damages note, the season finale is this week? I feel like I may be a couple of episodes behind…

Damages is one of the smartest shows on TV, you really have to think and I love it. It’s got so many twists and turns, I heard it does really well in The UK. This season has been better than the last, if it keeps getting awards love I don’t see how it could be canceled. FX needs an Emmy show. Nip/Tuck and Dexter are too shaky…

  8. Party Down had a good second episode.

I just hope that Life writers write a great series finale that ties up all the loose ends. I am a little sad, Sarah Shahi won’t be in a great part of it because she is pregnant.

I like most TV shows, and I liked Veronica Mars. I also like Party Down. The concept of United States of Tara didn’t really appeal to me, so I didn’t bother watching it. Damages is pretty good, though I have only been made aware of it recently, so I am currently catching up on the first season. I also watch Life on Mars, Life, Lost, Scrubs, and Better Off Ted. I watch almost everything, really.

But seriously, who cares which shows are good and which shows are bad, tell us how this affects Chuck!

  10. JS, Dexter isn’t on FX.

  11. Alex

JS Damages is doing OK – really well would be a stretch but considering its late night timeslot it does well.

  12. I would say OK is a stretch, Alex, unless you are counting all the repeats.

I’m pretty bummed tonight is the season finale of Damages. Although this season wasn’t as good as the first, it’s still so well done.

My Wednesdays have been ridiculously full as well: Life, Lie to me, Lost, Damages, Important Things with Demetri Martin, and Scrubs. Still, a terrible shame with Life going away. It was always the first one of all my Wednesday shows I watched and I will sorely miss it :(

  15. Alex

My bad Julia I was talking about Damages UK performance and somehow managed not to say that.

  16. Jon

Damages does well on BBC One in its latish slot with 1.5m last time I check, FX will renew it for a third season but they should move it to a different timeslot as the current slot does it no favours.

Party Down looks interesting but I more looking forward to Spartacus.

  17. Ah, gotcha, Alex.

  18. I forgot about Lie to Me! I’ve been watching it pretty regularly on Hulu, though I think I am one episode behind.

Damages does better in the UK than in the US? wow.

  19. Robert the last Lie to Me episode was the one about the drug company. I think it was my favorite so far.

  20. Suzanne

“Life” is an excellent show. I do not understand why its ratings are so low. I know that your site is predicting the axe. I have my fingers crossed…
