ABC News’ Nightline outperformed CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” among Total Viewers and the key Adults 25-54 demographic for the just-completed first quarter, according to Nielsen Media Research. This marks the first time in six years (2003) “Nightline” has outperformed “Letterman” for a first quarter. It also marks the first time in nine years “Nightline” has outperformed “Letterman” in the Adults 25-54 demo three quarters in a row. Additionally, “Nightline” delivered its best 1st quarter Total Viewers delivery in 6 years (2003). “Nightline” also beat “Letterman” among Adults 18-49.

“Nightline” grew the most compared to the competition vs. first quarter 2008 among Total Viewers and A25-54. “Nightline” grew 18% among Total Viewers, and among Adults 25-54 it grew 7%. In comparison, “Letterman” declined 2% among Total Viewers and 7% among Adults 25-54. NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” increased 4% among Total Viewers and 2% among A25-54.

Additionally, “Nightline” cut the total viewing gap with “Leno” by 21% versus 1st Quarter 2008, marking the smallest gap in six years (2003). Among Adults 25-54, “Nightline” shrank the gap with “Leno” by 9%, the smallest gap in 13 years, since first quarter 1996.

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
